Harry & Meghan The Irish Family Explanation | Jarlath Regan | Standup Comedy (Extended Cut)

The latest Harry & Meghan revelations contained within the Netflix documentary series are confusing until you view it from the perspective of comedian Jarlath Regan and his Irish family. We have all been the fresh eyes of Meghan Markle and the scapegoated little brother of Harry Windsor at some point or another. In this extended version of Jarlath's routine on the Royal Family crisis he explains exactly why the whole debacle is so understandable.
This clip is taken from his standup special "Notions Eleven". Watch it now on his channel for free for the very first time. Jar's next special is being filmed this January. You can be there to see it in Dublin. Tickets are on sale now from Ticketmaster.ie

My dysfunctional Irish/Indigenous family is sufficiently loved/notorious in their home county that we are always very much aware of what people say about us. Very, very, VERY much aware. So we give any new person we bring home from college for the holidays a heads up on all the major talking points. The illegal exhumation of a husband by a grieving wife who was beautiful enough to get other folks to do the digging for her. The moonshining. The fact that the twins in charge of the moonshining during the prohibition era had the largest still ever busted up by the revenuers in our state. A record that I imagine still stands. The fact that a member of my family may or may not have dropped a very bad man down an abandoned mineshaft, car and all. The fact that my grandparents always had a menagerie of sick, injured and abandoned rescues they were nursing back to health so the new person had better like animals -- and be comfortable with the wild animals as well as the domesticated ones. The fact that eccentric behavior was as common among us as music was -- just like everybody either sang or played an instrument, everybody and I do mean every single one of us, had some crazy thing we did. So we told them what they needed to know. Just the highlights. So the poor person wasn't absolutely blindsided. After all, if we weren't honest, they were going to find out about us anyway -- the first time that they went out among the other locals. Our honesty was also, though quite unintentionally, a test of character that not everyone could pass. Those few who did were either very tolerant or just as crazy as we were. Which kinda explains why they were with one of us and willing to come home and meet the family in the first place.

According to Harry's book, both brothers promised each other they'd make the other one's significant other welcome and say nice things to the press, because they knew any girl joining that family would have a rough ride. Harry followed through his end of the bargain. William didn't. That was because William had seen what happened with his parents and didn't want to rush anything. Problem is, he took so long to propose to Kate, the press called her "Wait-y Kate-y". Harry didn't want that for Meghan, but William had a problem with the speed of their relationship. Technically, both had good reasons for their actions but, publicly at least, William didn't show support to Meghan the way Harry had to Kate, and that rubbed Harry the wrong way. The short version is that family need to learn to talk to each other!

Fun story: Christmas. Me: 11. I think. Eh. Around that age. Before 13! Great grandparents house. My cousins and I are all causing hell in our usual preteen girlish antic. (Aka loud shrieks and gorging on sweets while shoving each other off the ottoman). Someone mentions to our aunt and moms about how we’re of age we’ll be thinking about bOoYYs soon. Typical Conservative talk from the older folks. Mom blows it off. Aunt jokes about being too young to think about grandparenthood. Grandpa and grandma are just half listening while watching fireplace recording on the Tv. Because why not watch the prerecorded version when there is an empty fireplace behind them? Silly gooses. Same person prods again about me settling down and be a good girl because “boys don’t like wild girls”. Me - digesting everything I hear at school without cause to consider it - snorts back with some (what I thought) was a sharp comeback. “Good thing I’m gay then!” My grandpa nearly fell out of his chair and mom went beet red. Auntie did not know what to say back and I didn’t much think twice about it. Jokes on me - guess who learned 11 year old self as onto something when I hit mid twenties? Lmao. (Mom is super supportive. Just momentarily embarrassed about my timing)
