A ridiculous premise, but a fun one. I'm bringing you a road test of the Harley Davidson Vrod 10th Anniversary Edition on both the road and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Read more on www.bridgetogantry.com

I just opened the throttle on open road for a count of 6 sec (give or take) and looked down real quick and going 130 MPH like it was nothing. I felt it had plenty more to go but the wind started to peel the helmet back on my head... needed to get it much more snug so I slowed and re-fitted my helmet better. Now eronomical fit and tight. The power wants to pull you off... torque comes in at about 4000 rpm and is flat to 9000. Very good low end torque as well. Great engine.

For all you people insulting Harley-Davidson's and Americans. You do realize we Americans are large men, hence we require large motorcycles. Also we are married and secure in our manhood. We ride because motorcycling is a wonderful sport with fresh air and sunshine and touring the America homeland is worth a good look so no need to rush it. When out riding we wish to return home safely to our wives and children. Many times we take our wives along with us on our huge touring machines and we go slow. No need to terrorize the little woman. No need to prove that we are men by speeding and racing on public highways. Americans have no need to insult anyone when stating our view point about why we ride large Harley-Davidson Touring machines slowly either.

Americans' average height is lower than a lot of european countries. They're large because they're overweight. If you think cruising down a street is a sport you're deluded.

I love this bike... got the VRSCDXA (2008 Night Rod Special) with ABS braking. Best motorbike I have ever rode. Well designed -- no wasted space -- obvious computer design and Porche influences. Solid as a rock... nothing shaking or rattling... bike is built like it was chiseled out of a single piece of metal. Well balanced... slow stop-n-go traffic I am almost "Track Standing" and at high speed it is icy smooth. If it weren't for the lack of fairing I wouldn't know I was going 130 MPH!

I think I now have the best of both worlds, a Ducati 999R and a Harley Road King. You can't have one and expect to do it all, a sport tour comes close, but for pure rawness and comfort on long rides I'll take the Harley. I'm sure there are other touring bikes that provide the comfort keys, but with the Harley you feel like your part of the environment with that exhaust note singing in your ears as you head down the interstate or any road for that matter. Its not all about speed and acceleration, I'll break out the Ducati for that. Now that I have upgraded the suspension of the Road King, it is surprisingly nimble for such a big bike. Mine is a 2003 model, Peace Officer Special, the newer bikes, 2009 and newer have the improved frame and from what I hear there is no need to upgrade it, good right out of the crate. Lastly, I've been on sport bikes most of my life and there were years where I would look down on the Harley and never ever wanted one, that shows you how my ignorance to the big picture affected my judgement! You can't ride like a fool forever, nor will you stay young if you make it by the going fast stage, if you do then evolution steers you towards a bike that allows you to discover the beauty of the open highway and points beyond.

    1) this is 5 years old 2) Vrods have the option of Midcontrols if you wanted to take on the ring 3) the rider admits he hasn't been on the ring in years 4) he admits he normally rides sport bikes which means he doesn't understand the geometry of the bike or the power curve. 5) Let a Harley factory Flat Track rider try the same stunt and lets see what the times are.

I find it quite bewildering really that so many people just "DO NOT GET IT" when it comes to Harleys or ANY other item someone may choose to purchase for themselves. Sure, if your thing is to ride a really quick and/or fast bike to its and your limits then do so. If however you only want a 125cc commuter bike then that is cool too. Nothing anybody else rides bothers me and it should not bother anyone else really. Why are people so hostile and narrow-minded? I think that we all pretty much agree that no one buys a V Rod if they want to be the fastest kid on the block, but if you want a bike that certainly has charisma and, once fitted with a nice set of rowdy pipes, quite possibly the greatest sound ever produced by a motorbike then the V Rod is a great choice. Big, comfortable, effortless cruiser that does exactly what the buyers wanted. Leave them alone if you do not like their choices. Try to find peace and tolerance in your life and you will be a happier person for it.

I shift mine at 8.5 (Night Rod Special) and doing 110k in second gear and rolling on it is just sublime. It's a custom as well, so got to keep that in mind.

It would be interesting to see the same expiriment conducted with one of the professional riders from the AMA XR1200 series of racing. As those riders race machines with a similar riding position, or at least far similar to this bike rather than the typical sports bike riding position and then see what kind of numbers they can make on the machine. Much like how the stig can always take any car and totally embarrass the times recorded by the TG presenters.

I think a lot of Europeans have been snorting the exhaust fumes of the rice burners for too long. They have very negative opinions about Harley Davidson's and that's a shame because they are preventing themselves from experiencing what a real motorcycle is all about. A stock VROD is capable of reaching 145 to 150mph. If you get the screamin eagle version of the VROD your talking about 170 horsepower and more importantly, well over 130 foot pounds of torque. But, that's why there are so many choices. Not everyone can appreciate the finer things in life. For those people, the break your back, herniated disc Japanese sport bikes suit this genre just fine.

  • @yteka99

Only 150mph? And that's the bragging point? lol The VROD is the least Harley, Harley ever assembled. It's motor is Porshe designed. There's no lean angle allowed due to hard parts and anything labeled "Screaming Eagle" better come with a free mullet hair cut and third gen camaro.

So very true. Most riders of V-Rods either don't understand this or are afraid do do so. Work the engine and gearbox hard between 6 and 9 thousand rpm when on a course or twisty road like this.Keep it out of the rev limiter of course. You are not going to hurt the engine, that is what it was built for. Listening to the bike breathe through the velocity stacks is as exciting as hearing the exhaust note as you work up and down through the gear changes.

Diavel. VMax. The VRod engine is extremely low performance for an engine of that weight and displacement. I don't care if a cruiser bike is a cruiser bike... but the Vrod "Muscle" just tries to pretend to be something its not. Theres nothing performance about it at all, just a huge, heavy, underpowered bike.

***** it claims to be a muscle bike. I never compared it to super bikes. Diavel and Vmax are both a similar concept, and far outgun the VRod in every respect. The VRod makes a nice noise but doesn't have any real performance whatsoever, despite its marketing.

A piece of shit compared to what, exactly? The build quality isn't any worse than anything else in H-D's lineup, and it's arguably the most "modern" motorcycle they've designed to date. The fact that some die-hard fans don't like it doesn't make the bike a POS.
