Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special Review. Is this big torquey touring motorbike the best there is

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We review the 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide special 114 touring motorcycle.
We look in-depth at how it rides and compares to the Heritage Classic 114. We look at the handling, cornering, straight line stability, suspension, brakes, engine, gearbox and more! How good is the luggage capacity? What's it like 2 up? What things are not so good? Is it comfortable? How big is it? Is it good for taller riders? Is it heavy? What is the wind protection like? All thes sort of questions are answered in this video. We show it riding, pov, and you can hear the loudness of the engine with stock exhaust pipes.
Please comment below and ask any questions or tell us what you think of this big, powerful torquey motorcycle.

I was going to say. With our 2020 107 Street Glides we commonly run over 200 miles before fueling. Oh and the first thing I do on these is change out the rear shocks to 13" aftermarket ones. The stock shocks suck.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan I hope Harley looks at putting better shocks on them in the future but I have my doubts. The stock 12" shocks are to achieve the lowered look, but do not have enough suspension travel with only 1.8". My '15 Road Glide was the same so I knew when I bought my Street Glide this year what to expect.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan Yes they come stock with 13" shocks which are not too bad. Nothing like a good set of Ohlin's or Legend's, but completely useable.

Hey Guys, great review again as always 👍 But what i'd like to mention is, that the "Special"-Models of Harley are not the "real" Touring-Models, they are more a kind of "fashion" (due to Bagger-style). The rear suspension is so approx 1" shorter, the seat is not that plush like on the "Standard"-models. They are more designed to fit the fashionable trend, not to offer the maximum in comfort. Not the best choice for long trips, if you've got a crushed backbone. But it is a great bike anyway

Catching up on your vlogs. I generally watch on my phone and have not had an issue with the sound. I prefer how you inform whilst static and keep quiet when riding meaning you can listen to the sound of the bike. Great machine although very muted sound. Looks real quality. I agree with another comment. One must remember the Harley stats are based on a US gallon which is smaller than imperial. If you get 40 mpg in US you get 50 mpg in Canada and England. I easily get 50 mpg in Canada on the imperial gallon on my new road king. Tank holds 6 US gallons. I got a few more miles per gallon on my 2018 harley heritage as it is 100 lbs lighter.

I suspect the short rake is because the screen etc is mounted to the forks, not the frame. All that weight would make the steering heavy, so they've made it more "twitchy" to keep the steering lighter. Also the bike would be almost be chopper length if not. I agree, the heritage is the largest fit. I'm similar height to you and also have a heritage. Went to buy a fatboy and looked and felt ridiculous on it. Came away with heritage 115 anniversary. Love love love it to bits. Like the look of this one too, very cool.

Two helmets in the top-box, better wind protection, heated grips and better side-view mirrors are some of the features that top the Street Glide by just a wee bit. I traded my 2018 Sport Glide for a Street Glide Special September 01 2020. When I was thinking about moving to a tourer the Heritage Classic was not something I would have considered as it is not a full touring chassis. The comments on stability of the Street Glide seem a little odd to me, mine feels planted and very sure footed at all speeds. At faster speeds on the highway it feels more planted and relaxing to ride than the Sport Glide (Softail Chassis) did. I went for the limited blue/black combo colour which retails at just over £24,000. It's a beautiful well balanced bike and I couldn't be happier, this is a keeper. In October my friend and I did the NC500, he was on a CVO Ultra, what an experience and the weather was great :) The only negative on the Street Glide Special is the use of shorter slammed shocks on the rear which make it not so comfortable on a rough road. You can adjust the suspension firmness but this does not alleviate the issue. A common upgrade is to go to one inch taller shocks to provide more suspension travel on the rear.

I own one having traded my 18 month old Sport Glide for it. I don’t normally comment on reviews but I was surprised by your quoted fuel mileage number of 39mpg. The demo you rode appeared to have a stage 1 kit (including non standard exhausts?!) which does significantly worsen fuel economy as I found on my previous Sport Glide. I kept my 114 engine standard and fuel economy is much better than 39mpg, even with spirited riding and high speed motorway runs. Also you mentioned the Heritage Softail as having a reputation as one of the best handling Harleys?!. Not in Europe!!. In my HOG chapter there are about 100 motorcycles, and not one Heritage. In fact I have never seen one for sale in a Harley dealer showroom here, although I am sure you can order it. You clearly enjoy yours, so happy riding.

Another great one. This along with the Road Glide is up there for me. From the stability point of view, do you think it may be down to the fact it’s a slightly different ride from the Herritage which you are use to. The fairing is attached to the bars which makes steering heavier than on some bikes like your Herritage. There is a strap on the pillion seat to hold mate.

Greetings from Winnemucca Nevada U.S.A. I average 35k miles on a bike in a normal year. So far this year just 21k miles, friggin Covid-19.That is NOT the Harley for serious miles all the time. Start with the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, i own a 2018 with the 107 in Fortune Silver color- it looks gold though with just over 92k miles on it. And for your height, [I,m 6' and use the 10.5inch] install the touring/ wide windshield 11.5 inch Memphis Shades light tint windshield. It will still be chin height so you always look over it like you should. Harley and Klockwerks also make a similar windscreen, I've bought and tried them but for wind/rain deflection over the helmet and especially around my shoulders and my passengers Memphis Shades is the won WE find works best. Actually I find the big Harley touring bikes have great sidestands. They lock into position when placed properly. The bike can move an inch either way in lock position so first time buyers might get nervous in the first week. The Harley heritage like yours is hidden beneath the footboard on extension and one can under estimate that it is locked in. I dropped my Harley heritage because of this and I think you have too. Cheers.

A different leather jacket! I like the other better. I really like the fairing and dash. A bit like the dash I had on my modified Mini in the 70s. Shame there isn't an oil pressure gauge in there. Some torque for 3,000 rpm. Handsome bike, overall. If I wanted a bike of this type, I'd go for the Goldwing Bagger DCT. The Harley is far too expensive. I'll probably stick to my MT-01 in Portugal and Duke 390 in Thailand, although there are so many bikes to blur the distinction between want and need nowadays. That was a good way to start the day Thailand time.

I ride a Heritage with a great 19inch screen which is quite a bit higher than the Street Glide screen. I like the look of the Street Glide but at 6' 2" I might cop more wind at motorway speeds so hard to know if it would be a step up?

Stability issues are not caused by rake and trail its the large diameter front tire. They were still fitting a 16in wheel the bike would be rock solid. Never have like the tail front wheels they do that for the looks. As for wind protection replace the shorty shield with a 9 inch shield works great.

I rode one many miles when first launched a few years ago and it was undoubtably better than anything in the old school camp in evolution terms in suspension and breaking, performance and smoothness imho. That is with the exception of the heritage softail classic which had more character and better looks and a better riding position. The street glide goes really well in the midrange but runs out of puff surprisingly early ...way too early, despite being quick off the mark and imho was too heavy to make the most of the improved suspension and braking. Riding position is not great for distances and I would not advise this for anyone with lower back pain...not enough weight on your feet to offset and balance weight through your back. Sidestand was a joke. I almost lost the bike in town when parking up. I agree with you on stability. Not great at slow speed in traffic...a bit nervy. Panniers too small for serious touring and screen too short. Good fuel range. I found the low speed fuelling to be flawed...have they improved the latest ones? It was too snatchy and not progressive enough as if they'd made that torquey lump too responsive to quarter throttle...a bit too on-off a little like the KTMs were a few years back...not enough development of the fuel mapping. High speed stability was good....better than at low speed. My biggest issue is none of the above. It is that I would not swap the character and engine note of the heritage softail air cooled motor or any of the older models for any of these new M8 motors and honestly? The heritage soft tail classic does handle a lot better also feeling lighter than it is . I even prefer the lovely loud blat of my 1200 gsa flat twin boxer on full chat to the M8 water cooled lump. The gsa outstrips the streetglide for comfort, handling, performance, fuelling, gadgets and touring ability too. It goes better, stops better, handles better and is far more practical. I don't really see the point of the streetglide except as a styling exercise and 2nd bike toy for the wealthy. Great review again Mr Darcy Snr and may I say great beard too!? Mine's getting there but I'm more old man than hipster as I spoil the effect by smoking a pipe. We're a dying breed! 😂

Hey! I do like this bike. A lot. As much as I prefer a frame-mounted fairing I actually like the look of the Street Glide special just a bit better than the Road Glide Special. Not sure how I would like the cockpit right up there in my face, though. I rode an Indian Chieftain. Very nice bike but I found that to be a bit off-putting. Seeing you on that bike, though, makes me think it would be tight in there for me. Don't get me wrong, you look OK for sure but it's close, so... I'm a Victory Vision pilot and I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to comfort! Bottom line, I like this bike a lot. If something ever happens to the Vision, this would be a contender for sure. Don't agree on the stability. Get both the touring and softail chassis of the ground, and the front wheel will self center on the tourers, and fall left or right on the softails. The touring bikes are more stable than the softails. The steeper rake and shorter wheelbase make for a smaller turning circle on the tourers. Add to that the better lean angles (even on the specials) than most softails, and better luggage capacity, and tourers are far more versatile. Tourers are heavier though, but also have longer pipes, meaning less reversion, meaning more low end torque.

Better suspension, better seat, rides down the road smoother, cuts thru the wind like there's no wind at all, and tracks straight and true. Love the color but I disagree with you about how what you said about how nimble the bike is. I have a 17 SG and if you are having difficulty doing tight turns, you're not riding the bike to it's full potential. I have taken training classes from motor officer instructors and I can turn my bike on a dime. Don't be afraid to scrape the floorboards. I do that all the time and I turn on a dime. Take a class from police officers. Don't know if you have those in the UK. Here in the USA, we have a guy named Jerry Paladino who has a course and he can do amazing things on a big bike. Check it out. Ride Like a Pro. He has a KZread channel

I agree, the SG and Ultra are probably the best handling out of the bunch
