Amen doctor, I spent 43 years in the automotive after market parts business, in the last twenty years everyone wanted to know what codes meant I would have to explain that there may be more than one problem causing that code to appear. Keep up the good work.🤓

Thanks once again Doc!!!!! Not long ago while we were riding in the mountains my wife's 2018 Tri Glide had a dash light come on, so we pulled over and luckily we had cell service and after a Google search was able to learn how to see/pull the code to make sure we could make it home... luck was with us and we took the bike in to our dealer and it had a bad O2 sensor. Smart bike.... ;-)

Yes doc, I fully agree. In my practice (Ducati bikes) we have had various problems with broken cables or simple corrosion at plugs or mechanical connections. Sometimes hard to find. One thing is for sure, a diagnosic, even with a code is not always possible. Regards from Austria.

Yes I agree a process in deed! I have a 21 Harley 48 and threw a B1211- fuel level sender shorted high side The dealership already replaced the pump and are going to replace the harness but I told them it's probably the resistor based of the wiring diagram because the pump still works when fuel gets to low than light comes on

Nice one Doc. There is a lot to it. and depending on the generation of system, the methods of troubleshooting can get all sorts of wild and wonderful. I just spent a ridiculous amount of time chasing down a cam sensor code on my new to me 2000 electra glide. Falsely assuming that the "professional shop" had done the job right caused me to chase all sorts of dead ends. In my frustration I had forgotten the basics: stop. assume nothing. approach it methodically. build an order of operations. The root cause? when updating the engine to use hydraulic cam chain tensioners, the professionals had used the cam sprocket that came with the kit and installed it without ever reading the instructions in, or description of, the OEM kit; which clearly states that an original style sprocket must be used and is not included. Nor had they even stopped to wonder why the original sprocket was so radically different than the kit sprocket. That the bike ran at all in that state is a mystery I havent solved yet.

Great answer , one thing I learned on new electronics, mine was Forklifts, but same type - is 1 wire might do 2 to 3 things , atleast on the Newer Hyster forklift , one wire my do horn , and the same wire my also do 4 way flashers . At first I was saying it was crazy , but the Voltage , and lack there of can change how a switch works , learned that in Shop class in Jr High. Using a Orthoscope seeing how Voltage works in Waves shows how it works. Confusing, but how they work . I left forklift industry about almost 10 years ago , they seemed to be ahead of Auto industry on changing DC Voltage to AC , where a 36 volt DC battery would last 8 hour shift , changing the system to work on AC and same battery would last over 3 shifts of usage. Wave's of power will change the World if used Properly !!!

Thank you Doc, I’m so furious right now, I bought new 23’ RG and ordered stage 1 and new bars for it, parts came in and dropped off bike, days later (late yesterday) went and picked it up & 40 miles later, west to take ride to dinner and 3 lights came on and codes are P1100c and C1032c, I have suspicions that the dealership cleared codes to get me to pick up the bike knowing the lights would come on after I left, can that be possible to ride the bike until Tuesday (dealerships closed) with those specific codes showing? Any light shed from you would be great.

  • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

It is possible the codes were created when connection were separated during the handlebar exchange. As long as the bike is running well. You will be fine. They are Historic codes. Great job Doc, I'm a licensed automotive, marine mechanic and of course play with bikes.. but I know my limits... even after 44 years wrenching.. I literally could of been rich just answering those questions or the client puts the phone near the noise.. absolutely hilarious.. I so have a question if you could answer.. I have a 05 fat boy CVO with 18,000 kilometers on it.. it drives me nuts why my machine seems to idle to high after warm up. It's always idling around 1000. Now that's what the tach reads.. haven't verified with timing gun.. but I really loved that classic lower Harley shuffle that the old carbs did, you lnow the classic of timing of Harleys.. I've verified no vacuum leaks, never touched timing or mods on this prestine factory screaming eagle set up.. Any suggestions or theories?? Thank you for your time.. Pete from Canada

  • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    2 жыл бұрын

Fuel injection changed the way Harleys sound at idle. You would think with all the sensors and mapping they could recreate the awesome shovel idle. There are reasons for the 1000 rpm idle. It take a lot of juice to run fuel injection. If you notice all Harleys with FI when started go to 1350 to 1450 rpm. thats to help the rotor/stator to send as much voltage to the battery after the starter took so much. at Idle the charging system in 05 barely keeps the battery up above 12.8 with all the lights adn FI system running. The bike's oil pump supplies oil and returns oil as fast as it turns. So if the idle was set at 750 lopping the motor would be starving for oil. The best way to get the sound you want is to research cams. Some manufactures can play with cam timing that comes pretty close to sounding old school......Doc

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson thank you so much for your quick response Doc... I do agree with the very hard and struggling start.. it's a shame that after warm up and full batt it wouldn't drop.. what kind of cam could create a lumpy idle without bad performance.. especially off the line.. I'm no hot rodder just an old man that loves great idles and sound.. 👍.. thanks for your time.. keep up the great work...

There are no codes being set off, I know intermittent issues like these are like looking for a needle in a hay stack, but being that this issue seems to be becoming more common, any suggestions?? 96 harley davidson ultra classic Electra glide was doing something really weird. A engine light came on but went off just as quickly. Then I would get the engine light on start each time I rode but it would go off. It wasn't a solid code and I was never able to get the code. My fuel mileage went bad and sometimes I couldn't even get it out of the drive before it died. It would die at stop signs and red lights. I looked up the symptoms and it would come back as the magnetti marelli fuel injection system that is on the bike. One weekend recently, I went on a 200 mile run on the old girl. She ran okay for the first 170 miles but the last 30 miles, she would kick off the cruise control with every bump on the highway and she just wasn't running good. When I got her home, I looked her over and I shut her off. The very next time I was going to ride her, I noticed the ammeter showing 10 volts and would not go any higher. I replaced the alternator earlier this year and it was working fine as far as I could tell until I took that 200 mile run. This whole time I'm thinking I'm gonna have to replace the magnetti marelli fuel injection with a delphi or a carburetor along with replacing my alternator. I decided to take it to a shop and have the alternator replaced. The shop did a fantastic job and were really fast and affordable to boot! Lo and behold, the new alternator alleviated all of the problems I was having with the fuel system. To date, I have had no problem with how she is running. I replaced the alternator myself the first time and I must have gotten some of the parts wrong. The stator must not have been rated 45 amps or the rotor rotor itself may have been the problem. The rotor taken off the first time had all of the magnets grouped together on one side of the rotor and the stator was burnt. The voltage regulator was also bad the first time. This second time it went out on me, exactly the same thing was found. All the magnets on the rotor I replaced had grouped to one side. The high temperature glue had failed. The stator was burnt and the voltage regulator was out. The guy who did the repair this time said it was a 45 amp alternator and the rotor was a sealed rotor. My fuel mileage is back up to 45 mpg where it had slipped to 41 to 39 with the old alternator and that was right after I installed it! It is much better now. I am elated I don't have to replace the fuel injection system. Some people have replaced their fuel injection to carburetor but at 2000 dollars to redo it, I was not looking forward to the cost. I could have done the delphi for a lot less but still the hassle of replacing it was not appealing in the slightest. We are coming to the end of the riding season but I'm gonna ride as long as I can before I have to cover her up for the season. I love my evo. She's been mine for three years and this is the first time I've had any trouble with her. This bike has been to Daytona week before. Apparently the old boy that owned her had some issues with the alternator on that trip. I am hoping we've got that issue solved permanently. I plan on riding her until I can't ride any more.

Have a 2003 soft tail heritage with a numbered paint job with only 7,000 mls. Attempting to change out the gauge and have found that the new gauges will only function on a 2004 and newer. Why is this. Dakota digital phoned me and informed me that they were out of stock and would take six month to get one made. What is the change from 2003 to 2004 and it is not the injection that should have nothing to do with the gauge. Right??

But there are dealerships who will say it's normal. So, no, they're not always the best for issues. A Honda dealership has techs who work like drunks. There's a cable on my Honda Shadow 750 that they forgot to run through the clip that keeps the wires together. I asked the service writer at the desk at the dealership if the tech could simply just put it back through the loop. He didn't write it down and the tech didn't do it. I've taken my bike there several times for service over anything (I don't have a garage nor access to a lift) and the techs fail EACH TIME to spot the flaw. If you have pride in your work, show it. If you like what you do, it should come out of those hands working on the machine. Everything is artwork and mechanics are really just morticians/surgeons. Repair it and make it look like it's supposed to. But mechanics don't want to do that. Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Hey Doc. Thanks for what you do. My wife, a 06 cvo v rod, is having a weird health issue. Battery was doing some weak starts and died a few times. Then Wednesday, charged and strong, ot started fast and ran well to 3 different locations and suddenly barely cranked but did start, went 200' and died with no juice left to crank. Just turned to E but should have made it at least 10 more miles, but so tried jumping, no. Tried with a little fuel, no. Even being jumped by a charger/jump pack, half the time barely cranked and other half cranked strong but no. Now new battery + plenty fuel, no start and even cranks slower immediately AND I don't hear fuel pump at all, plus didn't get fuel from bleeder valve when tryingto start. Did I kill her? I love her and need her back. Voodoo? Black magic? Help please! I have codes.

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Crap. Don't really have the $ for that unfortunately. I know the battery was going bad plus my positive terminal was loose. Would no battery make the ecm or something with security prevent power to fuel pump? I've tested and get no power to fuel pump or fuel pump fuse.

That's why I own older Harleys. That's just way too complicated for a motorcycle. Who needs all that? Getting too much like a car. Engine light, ABS light, etc. just one more thing to stress out about. Don't you get enough of that in your car?

NOT THAT SIMPLE! I just bought a new Screamin Eagle tuner for my Street glide. After spending the money for the tuner and the time to install the tune, now I have to spend more money and obviously at the dealer to have a 02 sensor code removed. Ive had this bike two weeks and Im starting to think this is a mistake. Especially for a bike with 900 miles on it.

Too many questions to answer here. Like did You buy the Tuner, Install the Tuner and You Program the bike? and Now you have O2 sensor codes? You don't have to go to a dealer to clear a code. plenty of KZread videos on how to clear a DTC code. Now if you want to know why the codes came up? That is another story....Doc

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I purchased the bike from a women who's husband had cancer. 2018 Street Glide 911 miles 107cu, V&H Power duals and Eliminator 400 slip-on. Now most people up-grade the tune with these parts so I went to check. Tuner website (Screamin eagle) said update available, so I updated the VCI and reinstalled stage 1 tune. Tune went right in no problem until I started the bike. engine light was on. Check the codes and had P0031, P0051 (CURRENT) P0134, P0154 (HISTORIC) deleted with tuner. Now Im a smart guy, I have another bike, a boat, I like to tinker. I found the code and what it was. 02 sensor. So I follow the videos advice and tried to delete the codes. By the way you cant delete the codes with the Tuner attached. So the Codes come up and I click and hold, delete comes up, I click and nothing happens. Then Part number starts to scroll pass. So I head to Harley dealer. Now I know it may run like crap and/or crappy fuel millage. Harley said you cant delete current codes. (on going maybe?). So, appointment made for June 7th $130 to delete codes and plus parts and labor for those parts. What really got me was he didn't know what the code was he never asked and really didn't seem like he cared if I was doing damage to it by driving it up there. You would think he would have checked the codes give advice and said Mr, smith your ok to drive it home and come back later. or you should not drive the bike with this code it could damage it. But I used a Harley device to upgrade a Harley and now I have to Pay Harley to fix the problem, That's the problem. Anyway thanks for the response and letting me vent. Great videos by the way. Thanks for your time

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson The other post was my rant but I did find the problem. The bike also has a wide band tuner on it as well. I didn't see it until I started checking all the connections. Not being familiar with the bike I missed it. But anyway I changed the tune to wide band and reinstalled the tune. Works great. So thanks for reaching out though.

Ha. My left had switches shorted out and MAN I got alll kinds of codes, think there were 2 ecm and 2 bcm and even abs or speed0.. Might have had trouble figuring it out EXCEPT, I knew I’d previously had to press very hard to get my hi beams to come on … then hard pressing the trip switch made them come on.. hah, was kinna a no brained at that point . Turned out the wires that go into the glue on the back of the switch were the issue. ..

I asked the parts counter at my local HD dealer and she blankly looked at me like I was from Mars. If you could please give me a part number, I'd be forever grateful. I wish shops would stop hiring staff that know nothing about bikes/parts.
