True but makes me wonder if this mod will make EPA Nazis come out for not keeping oil and vapors under control in system. Car engines are supposed to be sealed use the PCV vent back into air intake system. That's the real reason HD does it this way. Then again some oil can seep out of housing.

@@roadglide1745 if you are not dumping it in the ground and properly dispose of the oil, the EPA has nothing to fine you with... If you vent it to the ground that is something you can get in trouble for I am sure. For example, I empty the residue into my oil container and dispose of it with my dirty oil at the recycling center..

Harley finally joined every other Vehicle manufacture that is already doing it, direct injection is a problem and it is not going away anytime soon, and it is getting worse. over 60% of all vehicles are doing this now and more will be in the next 5 years. Including motorcycles, some already have DI, some are being developed.

When my 2000 FXDWG arrived at the dealer I requested the screaming eagle filter set up with the K&N reusable filter. I saw this video and went to look seriously at what I had. Lo and behold, there is a metal tube that connects the two banjo bolts. Nothing goes inside the air filter. There is a rubber hose that exits from the rear most banjo and disappears behind the rear cylinder. Way back then, the mechanic did me a huge favor and I didn't even know it. My old Harley has NOT been drinking oil since the day it left the dealer! I don't know where it came from or who made it, but it is professionally made and it does the job.

I did an S&S Stealth filter just like yours and after joining the hoses with a T ran it back to the filler spout on my 2010 Dyna. Removed the filler spout, drilled and tapped the spout for a hosetail and put a length of hose with a T in it - one for the head breathers, one for the filler spout and the third (with a breather valve in it) up to a catch tank. **** I think the most important thing to tell people though is not to over-fill the oil tank - on a cold engine with the bike on it's jiffy stand only fill the tank so the level is one third the way up from the low level up toward the full level because the bike is upright when you are riding it and the oil expands when it is warm, so the level if set as I said - one third - will be just about at the full mark when the bike is upright and warm. Always remeber that when the engine sits after use, all the oil in the engine runs down into the crank and cam compartments and can measure about a quart of oil. When you start the bike, the pump sends that oil back to the tank and if you have over-filled it then it goes from the tank to the engine via the vent passageways, the crank then churns the oil up and creates an overly heavy 'oil-mist' that then carries-over into your inlet/air filter and spoils your engine.****

As it comes out as barely visible vapour you would think it wouldn't be such an issue with the running/tuning and quite likely emissions. But as the engine gets older and starts to wear out the vapor will increase. car manufacturers run the crank breather into the cam/valve cover I'm sure HD can do this its just the way HD have done it and plan to continue to do so and cost cutting...In 2020 sportsters are no longer sold in the EU and UK due to their poor emissions, it was stated that its not worth HD up grading the emissions its just easier to delete them from the range....

@@camomanofcranham This isn't really a Harley problem, other motorcycles also do this from what I have gathered, if not all of them. Few months back I installed an airbox removal kit into my old carbed 2005 Triumph Speedmaster. The kit contains K&N pods that are slapped right into the carb (or throttlebody if you have newer injected model) and for the breather tube, which used to be attached into the now tossed airbox, a small K&N filter to prevent creepy crawlies and crap getting into the crank case. Anywho, I checked the inside of the airbox and it was quite nasty. It had gathered quite a lot of oily gunk in there during its 18 year lifetime. @@kpnomad7 An internal combustion engine is basically an air pump, when pistons move up & down the air on top of the piston isn't the only air being displaced, the air underneath the piston is also affected as the piston moves up & down which is why some type of crankcase ventilation is required in order not to build up too much air pressure(& vacuum) into the crankcase, the E.P.A. requires crankcase "gasses" to be routed and vented back into the air intake track of the engine in order to burn off any unburnt gasses(that may slip by the piston rings) to help reduce hydrocarbon pollution, the problem that Harleys have with oil in the air cleaner is that the crankcase vents are being overworked by the excess pressure of ever increasing engine volumes and with the extra air pressure the oil suspended in the crankcase vents doesn't have enough time to separate from the air and return back to the oiling system, the hope of adding an additional point of ventilation into say the dipstick apparatus such as the feuling is to decrease the overall excess pressure from the system itself helping the overall efficiency of the ventilation thereby giving the suspended oil more time to separate.

So Doc, I love this idea and want to do it to my 2019 Ultra Limited. It makes sense NOT to suck oil mist into the airbox - 1) it shortens the life of the air filter and 2) dirty oil mist going into my cylinders can cause additional carbon build up and that dirty mist is basically doing the exact opposite of what the air filter box is supposed to do - that is, keep outside contaminates OUT of the burn process and have only CLEAN air for combustion. So now the big question - would doing a mod like that void your factory warranty? I obviously don't want to void my warranty. I mean, if you did a poor job on the mod and it sucked in a set screw that you used to block the stock ports then of course harley would not cover it. but it doesnt really effect anything on the bike so i'm not sure why it would void a factory warranty.

I don't want to rain on your parade of "Honda is awesome" but they are going to the Direct Injection style that is causing this issue due to EPA and EU regulations. The 1100 Africa Twin already has it and the New Rebel will also. Kawasaki is going to be doing it in the next couple of years also. This problem has been plaguing Cars for over a Decade now and more and more cars, trucks, vans, ECT are getting them year after year. Might want to actually look into what is causing it instead of going "Harley bad" Oh yea, Indian Motorcycles do this also.

@@hhuodod2209 Yea, smaller bikes might not have this issue, but as engines get more powerful, more and more are going to the Direct Injection and circulating the oil back into the engine to burn it off. There are a few solutions being worked on, like Toyota's Dual injection where they alternate between DI and Valve injection, but you still get build up on the cylinder heads. It is not going away any time soon and literally every car and motorcycle manufacture is looking at doing this if they have not already.

I made my 2017 M8 107 a free breather (stock air filter) back 3 years ago. Used a Plastic Tee from a car vacuum line to tie the two breathers together. Then I ran the line out the air filter housing at the inner front corner then through the front push rods and down and back along the frame to where the fuel over flow line dumps. Never seen a spot on the shop floor yet and no more oil in the throttle body.

Important tip on securing screws to not get sucked in, had 4 new HD’s over 18 yrs, never had a issue w/ 1 except.... 1st Harley, Sportster, had straight pipes, jetted carb, SE air filter installed. 2 yrs later, rolling at 45 mph, bikes sounds like it damn near exploded, pull over, get the tow, dealer finds tiny screw, blew the piston & head to hell, pretty much new engine, 5 cent screw. Ironically Low Country Harley was honestly the dealer that installed it all! Not to worry, when it happened had moved & it had been taken off by new dealer, LCHD was always great!
