Harley Benton Marquess 4 Unboxing & First Impressions: • Harley Benton Marquess...
Hey everyone! Today we're going to be reviewing the Marquess 4 from Harley Benton. The Marquess is a newer model, though it has been overshadowed by some of Harley Benton's more recent big releases such as the JP/JJ models and the new MV-4JB Gotoh. While those models are targeting a more vintage vibe, but the Marquess 4 is a modern rock machine. With a strange body shape, spector vibe, and a fast & sleek 24 fret neck, how will the Marquess 4 fare? Let's find out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

Respectfully Scott, I have to disagree with you. The price point is nice, but the bridge really puts me off of this for the beginning player If I were to consider gifting a Harley Benton bass to a new budding bassist, I'd recommend the MJ-4 , JB-6, PJ-4, series basses. Just my two cents and again, no disrespect intended.

Interesting analysis, good job! I like this shape, it's part of the Metal package, in my opinion. I wanted to buy it at fist, one year ago. But after several months, i saw it wasn't a success on KZread reviews. And when the JJ model were released, i saw your video and changed my mind. Thank you so mush, i really enjoy my JJ55OP bass, it's really cheap and very nice. Thank you for your advice Lobster!

The specs are copied/pasted of the Spector legend standard, but the Marques comes at lower than half the price. I own the 5 string one and I can safely say that it as good as the Spector legend. The pickups weren't great and have been replaced. Also, the bridge is exactly the same in both models, made in Korea by Sung-il (model bb007).

I love it. The shape is more convincingly ric inspired than their ric copy ha I would say that bridge is rather easy to manage. Push the saddles back and forth by hand then when finished set screws squeeze them together from the sides. With Emgs this will become my fave and I have my choice of a few higher enders. I can tell you like the traditional body designs better though

  • @egroegmcdonald9870

I really like my blue Marquess 4. I do like that they went outside the box on the body design. It plays well either sitting or standing. Is it my #1? No but it is a fun change of pace, and I can get the sound/tone I like with just a little bit of change on my amp from my standard settings. Also, the lower weight is a real back saver, on certain nights, to this 64-year-old body. I do agree that the bridge leaves something to be desired. Especially for a new player. Setting the intonation on this may well put a new player off playing altogether. That in and of itself is reason to LOUDLY steer a beginner, or anyone considering gifting a bass to a beginner, away from this or the Harley Benton RB414. As always, LL, Thanks for the honest and entertaining review. Wishing health and happiness to you.

Happy Thanksgiving. Great review of a strange bass, at least looks wise. That shape needs a solid back finish imho. But agree the jj is probably the better choice for the coin. One note. I don't mind ceramic pickups if they are higher quality (not that these are though). The DiMarzio model P and model J's are ceramic and among my favorite pickups. Many Musicman Stingrays have ceramics too. Its the lower quality pickups that give ceramic pickups a bad reputation.

Nice review, thanks! I kind of like the shape - I'm weird, I guess 😅 - , but I'm not sure about the two volumes buttons (I would much prefer a global volume & a balance, much more practical), and yeah, this bridge looks bad. But I like the sound! I would very much like to see a review of the 5-string version though, since the pickups aren't the same. I would also love to hear how it compares to another low-budget 5-string bass, which is the RedSub multi-scale / fan fret Infinity 5 from Gear4music.

I've had the 5 string version in black since January, it's my main bass now taking over from a status graphite B2 and a sandberg PM5. I changed the eq (stock one is utter RUBBISH) and I'm wanting to pop a fluence set in but life is expensive atm so that upgrade is gonna wait. Its the most comfortable bass I've played in a long time with the 35" scale the neck is comfortable and has that nice B string ring. As for it being a competition with the new (and IMHO disgusting) JP models there was almost a year in between them being released. I LOVE the marquess shape and feel and intend on getting a 4 and doing the fluence mod on the 5 (and upgrading the electronics of the 4) next year, funds permitting.

That is kind of an odd bass, both visually and tone wise. I fairly recently picked up a JJ-55 OP and a JB-40FL largely based on your reviews. That fretless is a riot (my first attempt at fretless) and I always wanted an active 5-string Jazz. I don't see how Harley Benton can make money selling such nice instruments at those prices.
