EDIT: It looks have prices have raised about 20-30 bucks since I bought em. They're still inexpensive but priced around $225 USD instead of the $180ish that I mentioned.
Hey everyone! Today we're unboxing and giving our first impressions on these brand new basses from Harley Benton! The JP and JJ models feature ergonomic ash bodies, roasted maple necks, 24 frets, and a sub $200 USD price tag (pre shipping) that will make you look twice! These basses look great on paper, but how do they perform out of the box? Let's find out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

I wouldn’t be surprised if a set up and decent set of strings brought these basses to life. I don’t understand why the passive JP is more expensive than the active JJ though - and I’d be tempted to swap out the tort scratch plate on the JP too. The ‘aged’ natural really does look the business.

I’ve used my 5 string JP for a couple gigs now. Aside from the low output pickups, I’m pleasantly surprised by it overall, especially considering the price. The quality is better than some $500-700 basses I’ve played.

I agree! Post setup, both basses are wonderful performers in regards to feel and playability. I have some new guts en route and I'm very excited to mod these. Honestly, the JP-45OP that I have feels like it should cost 5x the price or more. The neck is flamed a bit, the roast looks beautiful, it's light and well balanced (8.2 lbs on the 4), and it just has so much potential. Great bones on these!

@@stozone152 from my experience, it is adequate. Not as good as a 35" scale bass or like a Yamaha BB, but for a $300 bass, I think it works well. Might want to raise the action on the bridge side to get a little more clearance, but I played a show with it this week and the notes on the low B worked very well. Hope this helps.

I got one of the JP-45OP models a couple weeks back and after a setup and raising the pickups on it... it really came to life for me. The P is quite powerful, but the J is a little weak. I also had a little noise, but after watching your vids on shielding I jumped in with the copper tape and now it's dead quiet. I really like this bass, mine is pretty light at 8.5lbs and balances perfectly. I am going to be ordering a 5 string version soon.

I just got a JP 4-string in sunburst. I agree that the action was very high out of the box and that the pickups were lackluster. After a setup and a fresh set of Rotosound flatwounds, it plays and sounds pretty good, especially at that price point. It beats any similarly priced Squier. I still intend to replace the pickups, though. I was thinking maybe an EMG Geezer Butler PJ set.

@@LowEndLobster I don't know but I really dont think it's a copy !! Who would copy a totally obscure model from Aria (a brand with very average street cred/fame) !? My guess is that it's just an industrial optimization, HB is buying the same bodies directly from Aria or from the factory making them for Aria, and simply putting their necks/headstocks on them. And I believe Aria is perfectly aware of it. Whats puzzling still is the difference of prizing, but not so much since the main/first concept of HB is to cut the price/margins to the max and get back their money on volume and reputation/massive presence...

  • @chriscuthbertson

@@VincentPersee the factory will probably just have a library of body and headstock designs and you can just mix and match them and they will build it for you. If the factory already had the CNC setup for the Aria model then the design will be in their library and so will be available to any one who wants to order it. I doubt many if any of HB body's are designed by them, they will just be what factories already have designed.

So, if you have a bit lower output in an instrument but it has great tone - no problem (unless you have a puny amp). Do you agree or do I have it wrong? I put much higher priority on basic tone produced not output.

Is there a neck dive problem with these? You didn't mention that. Also, is the battery compartment equipped with a door or a screwed down plate? It's hard to tell from the pics on the Thomannmusic page.

got one and sadly its been a bit of a let down since day one. Hard to set up, never quite got the action right, pickup position makes slapping hard, impossible to make the tension right to put a higher B rather than a lower B and the blend pot has come loose very quickly as has the input jack. Maybe I got unlucky, but I'm having to spend a fair amount on this instrument to make it workable. On top of that it has this mid sound that I just can't get rid of. Should've bought an MB4 I believe. Gorgeous looking bass though I must admit

If those also happen to be Wilkinson/Gotoh tuners, these basses would be a steal. Just the bridge alone is 1/4 of the cost. On the Harleys I've tried, replacing the pups is a given. I'd say they would be sufficient for a first bass to learn on, but they scream for an upgrade otherwise.

  • @LowEndLobster

The tuners here are decent for the price, but are definitely worth an upgrade. I think I have a set of Wilkinson tuners that should fit the 5'er. The 4 is getting hipshots. I'm very surprised by the neck on the 4. You'll see why in the full review.

Which one would you choose if you had to get either the JJ-55 or the JP-55? I don't care too much about versatility, I just want the one that has the most growl. That would logically be the JJ, but listening to the demos it somehow sounds like the JP has more growl :S

  • @LowEndLobster

Great question. I personally prefer the JP over the JJ a little bit. I think the JP with the passive tone control is more usable in real world scenarios where the 2 band preamp in the JJ isn't as well suited to its character.

I went to Thomanns website. T 5 string pj sells for $219 but you have to factor in the shipping. I wanted to get a quote on shipping but they require you to submit full purchasing info including credit card info before you can get a shipping quote. Anyone know how much do these cost to ship to USA? I wonder if this is made by the same people who make the Aria?

  • @LowEndLobster

Interesting! Mine were both sub 200 when I bought them. (189 each) Shipping depends on where you are, but shipping for these two and a Marquess 4 was about $112 USD. I checked for a single bass and it was like $80. I recommend snagging 2-3 instruments to save on shipping costs per instrument.

Hi Lobster , I am really curious about all this roasted maple being offered. I have a local supplier for my roasted woods, I select the cuts and he roasts them for me. I am wondering if these necks are stained to look roasted or are they true roasted maple necks. Any time you want to remove the neck or even the tuners take a look and see if there is any signs of staining.

I agree. The electronics are definitely the weak spot on these. That's ok because the feel is REALLY good post setup. I can get the action super low on the 4 and pretty low on the 5. The 4 is also like 8.2 lbs. I already have the mod parts for the 4 en route, and I'll mod the 5 after. I have some cool plans with EMG :)
