    It would be great if Thomann afforded buying a custom Harley Benton guitar based on this kit. Choose whatever parts you want in the shop, choose a simple refinish, name on the headstock and get a custom guitar built by Thomann engineers using parts you have specified in the order. Harley Benton guitars are great except pickups, electronics and tuners and I would like to have better options without a visit to a luthier

    I’ve built a HB DIY Strat kit and it was fun, I learned a lot and it turned out to be a guitar I enjoy and play on a lot. The neck is great. I’ve upgraded pickups, locking tuners, better tremolo, graphic nut and soldered so one tone control supports middle and bridge pickup.

    I think we generally underestimate how good a guitar you will get by upgrading (the right) components on an affordable axe. That specific upgrade is expensive mainly - I think - due to the usage of Thomann "plek" service on that particular guitar which costs close to €400. I would say that upgrading the pickups + the nut is already making that "SG" a match for a Epiphone. Good point also on insisting on the importance of wiring upgrade. A wiring upgrade can go a pretty long way and if you're already swapping your pickups, why not changing the whole electronics anyway. Last point is, playing a guitar you made yourself is just a remarquable experience. There's something organic about an instruments you assembled, painted, etc. that even a 3k Gibson won't provide. Well done

    I really liked the description of a good electric guitar as ringing out very well and having a lot of resonance when played unplugged, would you say that good basses have similar qualities? what unplugged characteristics do u look for in a bass?

  • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses

    @ThomannsGuitarsBasses

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Moonuel! I look for the exact same thing in a bass as in a guitar when playing unplugged. A relatively balanced tone, shouldn't be too quiet and I want to hear a nice tonal character (some bite, some growl, etc). I've built a p-bass kit for our Julia (bass host here on the channel) and I knew from the first unplugged note, that it will sound great through an amp. You can hear a bit of it's acoustic sound in my video on my own channel. Check it out if you're interested in it. (search for Kris Barocsi) Cheers //Kris

    My build on my picture I fitted mini humbuckers and 500k pots and finished it with satin black. Plays great and it’s done a few gigs now one of which at the 100 club in London. All the guitar freaks asking questions after the show about what it was etc. I love the fact it owns me about £150 all in and my time setting it up and dressing the frets etc and it’s more than good enough to gig with. Yes I’d love a PRS but it just goes to show you don’t need ££££ to get out there and play.

    The only criticism I have is that you used humbucker sized p90s, should have used humbucker to have apples to apples comparison and now he have... well apples to oranges. The Revv helps getting those big clear and punchy tones too doesn't it? :D P90s are probably my favorite pickups though, if only they were less prone to buzz and microphonics. Maybe fishman should make something p90 flavored with 2 voicings. One more middy, one more scooped with that signature p90 clarity and punch

    A guitar, once bought, is forever mine! I will never sell my guitars! Oh well, one of them I made a gift to a very good friend, but I will never sell! Period! Don‘t sell any of your guitars, or you will cry! So, take your time to decide. Sleep many nights over it, before buying. Make sure it will be the right one, feeling right! Have in mind: the guitar chooses you! Not the other way around. If you are at some point later not satisfied with the sound, you still can swap certain parts. If it’s still the less played and just hangs on your wall/stand, don‘t sell it! You will regret it for sure! Ten years later you will grab the uggly duck, clean it up, put new strings on it and have a grin from ear to ear and play the crap out of it! 😉😃🤗

    You need to do some set-neck model kits and maybe a Firebird (Esque) neck-through kit as people are more likely to spend money upgrading LP or SG type guitars if they have set necks as it doesn't matter how much you spend making your kit guitar into a great kit guitar if that guitar has a bolt-on neck it is automatically identified as a cheap guitar by people

    You don't do this this way to make money. You do it for yourself and you have a special "thing" in mind and you do it because you enjoy it. To be on the money making end then be a Tone Fuchs or something. I do have a question guys. So a lot of the guitars I buy I have modding in mind IF... IF the body and neck has all the traits of what I am looking for. Do you ignore the electronics so you get a feel for how far you will go with it to make it your own? I just got in my P-Bass kit from Thomann so I am going to have at it as well.

    Hey Steve, have fun with the p-bass kit! If I have modding in mind, I don't pay too much attention to the hardware or the electronics. I will play the instrument unplugged mostly to get an idea of the resonances, playability and sustain. If there's potential, I will start modding it and upgrading what's necessary. Cheers! //Kris

But some ID/ID-theory peoples such as myself consider such as hand-crafted knobs, and, how much more, that first fanned-layer headstock to be utterly unenjoyable examples of the #1 DESIGN MISTAKE: OVER-DESIGN. Obviously no time to delve into this very highly nuanced issue, so will just ask: never mind the craft-shop amusements, where is the ultra-obvious Evertune bridge on the different HB kits? Please, please, no one else whom I have found has this oh-so crying issue addressed (given HB kits' lovely crazy-upgrade potentials), and I'M A NEEDY ultra-n00b dying over here.
