I bought a C&C 32 this year which has these same Harken 40 ST winches. As the boat was in the water when I bought it I did not bother with servicing the winches until this past weekend. When I disassembled the first winch there was tons of old dirty hardened grease and they were absolutely coated with the stuff, so much so I couldn't get the stainless pin out which holds the left stacked gears in place. It must have been a few years since they were last serviced. As a consequence, I ended up removing the entire winch from the cockpit combing and cleaning the whole thing including the brass base structure. It took almost 3/4 of a litre of mineral spirits to remove the grease and clean things up. One thing which the video does not show well is that you have to actually unbolt the winch and remove it to remove the centre spindle structure as it goes up through the bottom of the brass base structure (a piss poor design in comparison to Lewmar winches which I find much more user friendly to service). The other thing I find unusual is that the video says to oil the pawls and the bearings. In my experience and from reading the Lewmar service manuals it was always my understanding that only the pawls are oiled and everything else including the bearings are greased when the winch is serviced. What I thought was going to be a 1 1/2 - 2 hour job has turned into a 6-8 hour job.

This is just a minor service, lol as if it didnt need cleaning lol., if it was serviced fully recently enough. For full service .. there is another ratchet gear inside the base ..pick up the base and the main axle will fall out. You can't get access to clean and oil the ratchet until you dissassemble it . Theres a screw at the bottom which holds the gears on the shaft at the lower end too. as if the ratchet pawls aren't worn .. ?? Check the touching end is still square enough... And check around the planetary gears axles, top and bottom,to see if the soft brass is holding up and undamaged. If damaged , the problem may be the pin riding up... Which you can see ,thers is nothung to stop the axles riding up (or falling with gravity or centrifugal forces.. when up isnt really up )

You have to remove the winch from the deck to get the center stack out. this is why I prefer Lewmar winches.

Where do I find parts for this exact winch? Someone took my trailing arm off and lost a few of the tiny bearings that are in it.

The bearing pins... What keeps them down ? This pin design is the problem that needs the video showing the fix..

The part i was looking for was skipped. If the winch is installed, how do you remove the center drive?

You have to unbolt the entire assembly from the deck. 8-( A year later Harken modified the design such that the frame could be unscrewed above the gear chamber, leaving the mounting plate still attached to the deck.

Old video but I'm still going to hold Harken to account not only for their poor design but for the poor attempt at providing their customers information on a very necessary maintenance item. Given the cost of these things, proper design that ensures ALL parts are able to be maintained and serviced w/out herculean efforts to remove the entire winch base is critical. As is a COMPLETE video that shows a real world winch that is mounted to the deck and has seen use i.e. isn't so clean I could eat off of it. In this video he goes to a great deal of effort with his little brush to grease the gears that cannot be removed w/out removing the base and then cuts abruptly to a shot in which the center shaft AND the gears he could ONLY remove because his base is not mounted has been removed...what was the point of previous shot? In my case the OEM of my boat mounted the winch w/ something just short of resin and fiberglass, very difficult to remove. I have to decide if it is worth it or not. If the equivalent Lewmar wasn't $1300 I would replace my winches. Unfortunately, they are and I don't have $6 grand to replace all four of my winches...likely more because my sheet winches are 46s. And then I would have the headache of different hole patterns for mounting🙄. All in all, I'm not impressed Harken...for the amount you charge for these things, you need a better design and better support efforts.

I wish that people that know nothing about winches stop making videos with bad and wrong information. when you strip a winch clean everything. It's the pauws and greased clogs that cause the most problems. just adding grease to the main bearings doesn't help. winches are very expensive, and if serviced properly will last for years

Gregory Moulton This is a very poor service. This is a new winch that does'nt need a service. The winch has not been cleaned, just adding grease and oil is NOT cleaning! The center stack has not been removed so the berings can not be cleaned and regreased. On the film the pauws are showen, but also not cleaned or regreased. most importaint is the pauws and springs are checked for wear and tear. the springs are very cheap to replace, and should be replaced when servicing. If these brake the winch is useless, and can be dangerous. Can Hakken service winches? Well not in this film!!!

That's funny, Alan. I appreciate your passion in this matter. I didn't take the video as the end-all documentation with regard to servicing of winches, but, rather a sales pitch by the Manufacturer. Have fun with your "showen" and "paws"
