Hare and Tortoise Review & How to Play | Board Games to Play With Kids While Social Distancing

Ойындар

Always Board Never Boring is looking at board games that are fun for parents and children, but which also have some kind of educational value, making them excellent choices while social distancing. In this second video in the series, he's reviewing Hare and Tortoise, an abstract racing game that actually does a pretty good job of making maths fun. It has carrots in it too.

I find it weird that the box says it can "frustrate the hell out if you" because that would turn me off buying this game, especially for kids. Also because this is not a phrase I'd want in my 8 year old's vocabulary. However, because I know what the gameplay is like (no thanks to the box), I would be interested in buying this game. Thanks for sharing what the back of the box said. I will make sure I get a different edition if I do end up buying it. Great video! Subscribed.

Thank you for subscribing. They made some very unusual choices with the presentation for this edition, but the game itself is really lovely and so good for improving maths skills. I would recommend looking out for Gibson's 1987 edition. It has very traditional artwork of the hare and tortoise shaking hands on the cover, both dressed in their Sunday best. It fits the theme perfectly.

I really like the color design in this, though it really looks like a Halloween game. It's pretty funny that it is ranked higher than Blackstone on BGG, though I really don't like most of the top 300ish games anyways. It's also funny that this game tries to teach math while most "adult" games strive to hide all the math, modifiers, and charts to prevent doing any math. The box blurb reads like every Kickstarter blurb ever, which don't strive to present any actual information. Goering approved at least.

You're right. Change the carrot patch for a pumpkin patch and swap in some pumpkin tokens and you have a Halloween-themed race game. I'm pretty sure there's already a racing game about witches on Halloween. Maybe they need to talk to this graphic designer for a new edition? Yeah, this game really puts the maths at the front. It's quite an achievement it still manages to be so much fun! The box needs a Goering quote, maybe with a little picture of him giving a thumbs up while eating a tikka masala.

Isn't Indian food the British equivalent of Mexican food in the US? So it's like the terrible taco jokes we get here. Goering would have loved tacos. I'm still half computer-less at my house, as you can likely tell. But I can get a heavy discount of a Dell through my work, so I'm leaning in that direction. That doesn't mean I'm spending less, but contemplating a crazy laptop with dual SSD drives and a 6G video card because I have issues.

@@johnmiddleton4291 It's just a very weird blurb for a kid's board game about the hare and the tortoise. Not sure what they were thinking really. Glad to hear you are getting the computer situation sorted out. It's like they say, "you've got to spend money to spend money." I think that's right...

Apart from your issues with the humour on the back of the box, this was an excellent review.

I just felt that the text used on the back of the box was a poor presentation for a really excellent, classic game that manages to balance being really fun with being something educational. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words. I appreciate it.

I've just watched this again and I'm curious. The squares with 1,5,6 on them are not really all that good for gathering carrots if less than five people are playing. Is that right or is there some adjustment to compensate for this?

You simply disregard the numbers that aren't relevant for the number of players. So, in a three-player game, for example, the "1,5,6" space will only award carrots if you are in first place. Note that there are no squares on the board that just have a "1" so the "1,5,6" spaces are basically the "1" space, but with a baked in element to speed up the games with more players.

This looks great fun, and it is not a lot of money on some of the online game stores. It is also ranked 300 places higher than BSF on BGG! 😲 Can you get minis for it? 😊

Adam Ryder Yeah, it’s very reasonably priced. I am sure there are some good Burrows and Badgers miniatures that would be perfect for it!
