    This is the best video I’ve seen on Hard Rock. I love the in “run” interviews and sharing the stories. You should do this every year even if you don’t get into the “run”

    Sitting in Silverton as I write this. Ran this morning and two times over past four days. I like running here as it is so beautiful, and low stress as I walk ALL of the hills these days. Thanks for this video. I don't have what it takes to finish this type of race I Don't think...but do enjoy the 50k and 50 mile "low land" runs. Thanks for the mid/rear pack footage (that's where I usually am), as it makes it seem so much more doable. So much focus on the podium stars, we all know their names, does a disservice to the sport I'm my opinion, and makes it seem too unattainable. 99% of us ultramarathons will never see a podium, and that's oka as that's not what this sport is supposed to be about. Could I hike through the San Juans for 48 hiurs, at 2 miles per hour, 30 min/mile, pace? Maybe I COULD. Thanks:)

    There's a separate lottery for people with prior finishes.

    Do ppl wear waterproof socks or just deal with wet socks through water crossings?

  • @jillsy2815

    @jillsy2815

    27 күн бұрын

    Most likely deal with wet socks because waterproof socks (if there is a thing) wouldn't breathe and would lead to wet feet from sweat plus I would think more blistering. People change socks and shoes during the race --their crew can have it ready or there are drop bags (pre-prepared bag of stuff each runner prepares for him/herself.) Additionally, Colorado is very dry and so feet dry quickly anyway. The water feels really good during a hot race. Depending on the person, foot pain might not be as noticeable compared to leg pain. I hope this explanation helps. 🙏🏽

    Q: how do these people get in HR so many times?

  • @realadp

    @realadp

    The lottery for previous runners are easier. Think it's 45 new slots, 100 previous slots.

    Hearing these people who have done this race so many times is very frustrating when some people have been waiting 15 years to get in to do it once. It’s a perfect example of boomer privilege, refusing to give up their preferential entry to make way for other people to get a single chance!

  • @kimaboe

    Blame the system, not the runners. Since it's a separate lottery for prior finishers, there is nothing those folks can do to increase the chances of first timers to get in, unless you want to mandate that you can only do it once. They drop out, it just means other prior finishers have a bigger chance, your chance as a first timer stays exactly the same. You could merge the lotteries, but your chances aren't really going up by much when you get a big pool of (relatively) local runners who've done it in the past joining the fight for the same ticket you're trying to get. Most of these people probably did their first ten Hardrocks before the race became popular. Just like how you could just sign up for Western States back in the day.

    @@kimaboe Blaming the system is valid, but we can’t ignore the role of veteran runners either. The separate lottery for prior finishers does create a bottleneck for first-timers. However, there’s more to it. If runners who have completed the race numerous times voluntarily chose to step aside occasionally, it would significantly open up opportunities for those who have been waiting years for their first chance. The system should perhaps incentivize or even require past participants to skip a year or more after a certain number of completions. For instance, after 5 completions, a runner could be asked to sit out for a cycle or two, allowing a more dynamic and fair distribution of spots. This would not only diversify the participant pool but also enrich the race by bringing in fresh perspectives and experiences. The spirit of the race is about the community and the challenge, and part of that spirit should include giving others the chance to partake in what many have already enjoyed multiple times.

    @@eggsbenedict9475 If there's 68 spots for prior finishers, and 78 spots for first timers, 10 prior finishers sitting out for a year has *zero* impact on the 68 spots for first timers. There are still the same number of spots available for them, and no fewer tickets in *their separate lottery*. Unless of course *all prior finishers step aside*, not going to happen. The only way for more first timers to get into the race is for the number of Finished spots to be reduced in favor of more Never Finished spots. That seems unlikely given the philosophy of the race. You could also argue that prior finishes shouldn't get you an extra ticket in the Finished lottery etc. but in general the system is pretty heavily favored toward veterans, and that is by design.
