Learn the best niches for hardcover books and get a glimpse of their overall quality.
Hardcover books are finally available to self-publishers on the KDP platform, and this is going to be a great opportunity to add more value, give more customers what they want and, of course, help you put more money into your pockets.
Today I’m telling you everything you need to know about KDP’s hardcover option, which niches I think will yield the best results in terms of sales of hardcovers-and which ones probably won’t-and I’ll give you my initial impression of the first KDP hardcover book that I just received in the mail yesterday.

    I was part of the KDP hardcover beta group so I jumped on the hardcover program even before it was officially launched. I agree with your analysis which was in line with my own thinking. My experience was that log books were the only ones that sold, however, I would agree that journals should work as well if you have a cover that really connects. Anything that qualifies as a keepsake should also do well. Based on your analysis, I'm thinking I might publish some my prompted journals (using existing interiors) as hardcovers with covers that appeal to the "keepsake" shopper whose design and style aesthetic is probably different than a basic paperback journal buyer. Thanks for your commentary and analysis.

    Yes, I've tried hardcover with my novel planners. I have sold any yet but I have the same books in paperback and they're just starting to sell. I'm very new to the low content business! I'm definitely going to try more hardcovers after watching this but be a bit more targeted, rather than just creating the same books in hardcover

Or does it appear separately? So I'm wondering how to publish both so they're in the same listing.

    In your "Bookshelf" there should be a "+ Create Hardcover" button for each title you've published. If the title and subtitle remain the same they will be connected on the listings in Amazon. (It will list paperback and hardcover options together for the customer to choose from) If the title and subtitle are different they will appear in completely separate listings and won't be connected.

    I know this isn't really related to this video, but I have a question for you: How good is KDP's paper quality for things like sketch books and coloring books? I am looking through reviews and seeing a TON of complaints about the paper. Not only am I seeing complaints that there are black borders around the pages for things like sketch books (I know people do this because Amazon doesn't allow blank pages) but also a lot of negative comments about the terrible paper quality and how anything but a regular pen or pencil will bleed through and how they would never expect an actual artist to even doodle on this paper. If this is the case a) Why doesn't Amazon offer different paper quality options and b) How are so many people selling coloring books and such like hotcakes when so many customers are unhappy that not only is the paper quality terrible but they can't tear the pages out (no perforations)? I was going to make a sketch book to start out just to get a feel for the process but now after reading reviews for ones made by KDP I am very hesitant. I don't want to sell people a poorly made product.

  • @RachelHarrisonSund

    @RachelHarrisonSund

    The paper definitely isn't a high quality, heavy weight paper,-definitely not artist quality. The reason Amazon doesn't offer several paper quality options, I imagine, is to keep printing costs as low as possible, since it is print on demand, not bulk printing. And while some customers may be unhappy, the huge sales and hundreds of positive reviews mean that many people have been satisfied with their purchase. The paper is definitely suitable for pencils, coloured pencils, and the like. The main issue would be markers.

  • @katehall2027

    @katehall2027

    I looked it up and all KDP black & white interiors (hardcover & paperback) are printed on 55# paper. Ditto for the standard color pages. The *premium* color interiors (for both paperback and hardcover) use 60# paper for the interiors. Unfortunately, the premium color hardcovers are very expensive. A 100 page premium color hardcover priced at $21.99 would net only $0.69 in royalties. A price of $24.99 would give you a royalty of $2.49. It is possible to get the 60 lb paper in a paperback if you order the premium color option. In that case, for a 100-page book, the price of $11.99 would give you $0.39 in royalties. A price of $15.99 on the same book would yield $2.79 in royalties. For comparison, here are some typical weights for various kinds of paper: 20# - inexpensive copy/printer paper 30 to 35# - newspaper 40# - rolls of kraft or butcher paper 50# - inexpensive sketchpads 60# - drawing paper suitable for pencil, crayon or watercolor 80# - cardstock, drawing paper for pencil, crayon, water color, or ink/markers 90 to 120# - Bristol art paper, heavyweight drawing paper
