Harbor Freight Purple Gun modification from 1.4 mm to 2 mm in order to spray primer
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I show how to modify the famous Harbor Freight purple spray gun from a 1.4 mm tip to a 2 mm tip. This simply modification will allow for better application of primer and other thicker paints.

Thank you!! I love the Internet and guys like you who post videos that make it possible to sidestep the idiocy. I just bought a gun today and tried to spray latex paint . Clogged almost immediately. No fluid tip wrenches or larger aperture sizes that I could find at Harbor Freight. I wrenched off the standard tip and will take my 5/64 bit to it tomorrow. You may have saved me a lot of headache. Skål!
I recently did this modification and sprayed high build like silk great trick anyone that says this don’t work is ignorant. Thanks scott

Thanks for sharing this video. DIY'ers need an economical primer gun. And this is a great way to get one.
Brilliant modification. Thanks for sharing it with us. THUMBS UP
Works... I drilled mine out ... sprayed Kirker Enduro Epoxy primer with 10% reducer @ 28 PSI at the regulator. Sprayed perfect. It was a black color epoxy. Looks like I sprayed it with Hot Rod black paint. You can barely see any orange peel at all. I now have an excellent primer gun. I used a gun like this with primer before modifying it. It spray like crap. With mod... excellent.... $9.99 Gun, who would have thought.
Great video ! I Bought the black widow thinking that spectrum would have a 2mm cap by now. I had Many people tell me to modify the gun to 2mm but never explained to me how🤦🏽♂️.
I did it just like this guy did verbatim. Sprayed latex door paint/primer to wooden swing porch. Thinned with water and added a little Flood floetrol. I used same purple gun with a small undersized compressor. did 3 or 4 coats.
i know this an older video, but finding it came at a perfect time. thanks for making it
Thank you. Just did it for a primer project
Definitely doing this thanks for the tip!
No matter what SOME people may tell you, this is a darn good little gun for the money! (I've had my own little shop for 30 years and have used many guns). This gun will spray primer if you thin it down according to factory paint recommendations. Also.....be SURE you clean the gun out really well before your first use it. Then every time after you've sprayed a project, run lacquer thinner through to keep it clean. Don't forget to pull the little plastic filter (under the paint cup) and soak it occasionally too. It's there to keep stuff from getting into your gun and works well.

This is great. I used my HF gun with a super thick paint-and-primer Behr Marquee to do an exposed joist ceiling. With minimal water mixed in it sprayed beautifully. Wouldn't come out at all before. Thanks for the "tip" haha

Don't listen to the haters.. this mod works perfectly... I did this and have spray 2 cars with primer. I also did this to a gun to spray Slick Sand, gotta work fast, but worked fine...
there's chinese siphon-feed guns with metal cans in larger needle sizes(2.0) that work pretty well. (aero-pro) for primer application and are low cost No alterations needed.

for those wondering about shooting gelcoat...yes 2.0 will work if you use duratec gloss additive to thin it out ratio is 1:1...be sure to work quickly as you will only get 15min total to get it all out of the gun before it will Harden. Set a timer for 10min and clean for 5. cleanup entails complete disassembly. Have plenty of acetone avail.

You can also thin the gelcoat with acetone. We use a 2.5mm gun for gelcoat and always thin it a little with acetone. I just bought a paint gun with a 4.8mm tip, so I shouldn't have to thin the gelcoat anymore.

I finally killed mine after 10 years and just bought a new one. I’ve sprayed house paint, rustoleum, automotive paints, marine urethane paints with this. Lots of marine paint and rustoleum, actually. Been a great gun.

Hi can you use a smaller size needle and or nozzle?
Yes
Just bought what looks like the same gun, but mine says 12 CFM at 45 PSI. Also, it came with the wrench and a little pipe cleaner. I can't find anywhere what is the tip size. I guess I could try to measure it with a pair of calipers.
But seriously though, you just saved me like 20 bucks and about a week
i have the same gun, use Decoprime and water it down 7-10% works great great cheap gun
Would the needle be needed to be changed for the larger diameter hole? Looks like the needle filled the 1.4mm hole but not theres space around the needle point when its not retracted.
I purchased this gun from HF and used the 20% off coupon. I also purchased the larger cup for holding more paint so not to run out of material so soon. This gun works great with latex paint, primer & paint! I built a LARGE custom solid wood table for our foyer. I primed table first with latex sanded surfaces and painted the finished latex coat with satin black. GREAT RESULTS with the finish. Just make sure you keep the gun clean as instructed. There were no leaks with my gun as some have reported. I did return to HF and purchased the stand to hold the gun while filling the cup through the Filter. It makes filling the cup real easy with no mess. I did thin both primer and finish latex with windshield washer fluid, works great. (Another u-tuber posted this thinning tip, works great).

Do I need to do this to spray cabinet doors with Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane?
Does this allow it to spray latex paint without thinning?
Hi, thanks, already had a spare sata NR95 which was a 1.5mm and would not handle heavier 2K primers or fillers and opened that out to around 2mm. No one is going to measure the precise size of the fluid tip orifice!!!
Will the gun leak now that the hole drilled out? I am not a pro at all, but I am about to paint my first paint job and I want to do metal flake. I want to use this gun but I am worried that if I drill out the tip it will leak while under pressure.

+Juan Belloso If you are talking about the "Air Cap" on the front, then first thing that comes off, use the wings captured in a bench vise, but large slip-jawed pliers on the knurled ring with left if off, while turning the gun. This "Air Cap" allows for vertical or horizontal spray pattern, the ring holds it on but when loose, allows for movement. If the "Air Cap" if off, then it's the fluid nozzle. This is different because it has a very thin hex wrench surface. If this is stuck, it will be harder to remove. Although, placing the factory wrench on it, then using the bench vise again, clamp down lightly on the wrench sides, then hold the tool and turn the gun. If the gun was not cleaned after use some time ago, this problem will occur on any spray gun, even ones in the $300 range and up. Maintenance is the key. Note; Many discuss this gun upon disassembly and the white goo on the threads of components. While true for some, use a Permatex "Gasket Maker" P/N 59235 or ACDelco pipe sealant 12346004 / GM 19333512 and apply a thin layer in 3 threads behind the second thread or so. Do not get it on the edge of the threads where it can contaminate the paint of plug up fluid or air holes if over applied. This is a white teflon sealant that allows for movement over 4 hours, but does not harden. It is used on oil and coolant senders, head bolts that screw into coolant jackets and still provide sealing, and never had a ground issue for senders. Apply it and wait 4 or more hours before use. Worse case, save it for parts, and spend >$20 and go get another HF spray gun. Retired ASE Master Tech. Not part of Scotts Garage / Hope this helps! Maybe.

Hi i bought that same one, i want to know if any nozzle fit that gun cause I want to get a 1.7 / 2.0 and where can i get it, please let me know
I don't know if you can help but I did the modification and I used the gun a few times prior to that but it's been a couple years. I cleaned it very well when I put it in the storage and now when I go to use it for some reason it is spraying at a low PSI without the front cap and when I put the front cap over the nozzle it won't spray anything at all and it appears that it's coming out the top of the paint bottle. I am only using water right now just to test it out so it's not that the paint is too thick or anything like that. Any suggestions? I have it at about 40 to 60 PSI on the gun air gauge.
the older on was a better gun in many ways, some of the parts were made better and they had a fan adjusting knob that was metal instead of plastic. The plastic knob melts in thinner

...so the needle still seals closed after the drill-out? no need to change the needle?...good! will it still spray reg. paint well enough? thanks, good info
hey man quick question do you think i could use a hvlp tip with a lvlp gun
Is the purple handle spray gun good for stains
I’m doing this for other paints that are thick, but wondering if anyone knows of another brand tip/needle that will fit on this gun. I want a 2.5mm tip
So this should be done for clear coat also?
where did you find the wench to remove the spray tip?
So, you don't have to drill out the air cap too? Or, is it already at least that big?

At the price of these guns, you just buy another gun with the needle and tip size you want. On a SATA gun, which this is a copy of, the needle, tip and aircap come in a kit and they are about $170 for the kit.
What is the drill bit!
hmmm...those one handed segments.
I did it and now my gun spits instead of spraying it no matter how i adjust it
You should see there new green colored gun they replaced the purple with. It's just as crapy! Well it does have a bigger paint hopper
So don't drill cap to.?
Did you try it?
i made my 1,5mm to 2.0 by drilling and it messed up my spray gun, no paint moved through
How do you compensate for the needle?
@1pcfred

The needle is a taper. Apparently it is large enough diameter to still close too? I just picked one of these guns up to spray some latex paint. But the tip it comes with is way too small. For what the guns cost it is a crap shoot. A good brush costs more. But I need to pick the pace up on the project I am working on. I can spray a lot faster than I can brush too.
I did this to the same model and for some weird reason it would not shoot paint and instead it blew bubbles in the cup. Idk what i did wrong.

This didn't work for me, not sure why it works for others. I bought this same gun recently, bored it out as instructed, but it only blows back into the cup. I could see that the needle still had enough taper to fully seat so I wasn't sure what the problem was, so I bought another one of these guns the next day and swapped tips, it did the same thing on the new one and the unmodified tip fixed the first gun. This confirmed that boring out the tip ruined the tip. No big deal considering the price, and I have a spare parts gun if needed.
