harbor freight drill press upgrade

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This was a project that I had been wanting to do for a while due to its versatility and space saving properties.
this was created with a harbor freight bench top drill press.

Only thing that puzzles me is, Why didn't he drill all this before he took the Drill Press apart?

The drill press would not go through that metal, I could barley open a 12mm hole to 14mm with it and a brand new Milwaukee bit.

Also, those welds will NOT hold once he put much force while drilling..!! Horrible welds, no support for the 90 degree angles and all the weight bouncing around like a bunny rabbit....!! He made a 60 buck drill press into a 300 dollar pile of junk that can't drill anything anymore, SMH.

There are reasons the drill head is kept vertical and the work surface is able to rotate and canter. That wobble every time you let go concerns me, and at the very least I would add a couple gussets to that 90. However, my guess is that it bent or broke the welds the first time you used the drill press. Also what will you use to adjust the height of your worktable now?

  • @robertroth3515

The utility of the final product is suspect but the video sure is fun to watch. Others have brought up good points of criticism, and I want to add one point of concern. Before the mods the weight of the top assembly, which includes the motor, was distributed roughly evenly around the column. In the new arrangement all the weight has shifted to the front of the column, which surely bends the column, taking the drilled holes out of square. Perpendicular holes is one of the reason why most people buy a drill press

Nice modifications, but how much slop do you have on the Horizontal Plane, do you maintain the parallel to the plane of the horizon; at right angles to the vertical to maintain the 90° angle the further you move the drill head outwards.

I’d not a engineering genius, but for me and what I do I see more advantage in the ability to change to angle of the drill than anything else. I know I can change the angle of my table but for some reason it seems it would be better to move the entire head as you can. I see you set out to complete a project, which you succeeded in doing, well done.

I've seen bench top radial arm drill presses for around $350 on sale. Even the store bought ones suffer from rigidity problems which is less if your only doing woodworking and always using sharp tooling. I'm wondering if this can drill a plumb / perpendicular / straight hole in metal?

i have one of these. the table/ height are not a problem. the press can only drill a depth of 2" anyways. the real problem is the strength of the motor. it cant drill a 1" hole through a 2x4 without getting stuck. my crappy corded hand drill has more power and RPM than my HF Drill Press. i don't understand why they put such crappy motors on a tool like this.

It's less than 1/6 HP despite what they claim look at the amp draw and compare it to split phase 1750 110 volt motors sold at Grainger. I got rid of my H/F 8 inch D/P a 10 inch Wen is a much better press with more power and cast iron not stamped main parts.

I'm not sure why you would want the drill press head to tilt. It would have been far easier to tilt the table, and that would not make the head less stable like this mod does. You could also just hinge the base of the drill press on a bench if you wanted to have it horizontal.

Nice tutorial on how to spend several hours making sure your drill press never drills a hole at 90° ever again. Seriously though, this was a fantastic use of all the crystal meth in whatever county you live in. Jokes aside, the basic idea you were going for isn't bad; with some proper welds, better fabricated parts, and more thought into maintaining the balance and rigidity of the structure (plus a head unit actually worth putting all the work into to begin with lol), this could be a decent way to upgrade an old machine. With some more practice, the creativity used in designing and recording this can be put towards a lot better used. Good luck, keep it up!

Thanks for sharing but all the fab work you did going into a 50 dollar sweat shop special is far not worth the time in my book. And I normally like HF tools( not after I bought a similar drill press and after 3 defects I'm fed up with them). Not to mention the motor is only 1/5hp SUPPOSIDLY and after the motor upgrade you'd have more into it than a good used press with a much more powerful motor. Awesome work man that's for certain. Nice idea for a Delta or something 😁

Goodbye rigidity. Hello oversized holes. I like what you were going for and understand not having the capability or the knowledge to execute it perfectly for all these armchair machinists on KZread. If you ever get the chance to redo your design, you should go with 1/4" wall thickness tubing, less joints, even fewer adjustable joints, MIG or TIG welding and a muchuch heavier base or you could fill it with concrete or sand. If you could pull that off I think it'd surprise you how much of a difference it would be. You succeeded in making me think about some possible mods so thanks and don't put any value into non-constructive criticism from KZread douche nozzles.

Tip: We know you’re drilling 3 holes, 1/4” first then 1/2”...we don’t need to see 10 seconds for each drilling. Show the first 1/4” hole in 10 seconds, then the other 5 just show touching the bit to metal and then a sudden breakthrough. It’d be a funny, and save 50 seconds.

Stop talking about the drill head tilting,it's the only static item when working on items, the item you can/are/will be drilling is dynamic and many times is far hard to tilt/yaw/pitch so moving the head around is far better. On a different note, if you can move the head, when clamped it needs to have no movement, and I wouldn't trust that bolt on clamp due to the shyte metal used in the thing. Good idea though.
