Had mine for 30 years and it still does perfect work

Harbor Freight's model was to offer old style, easy to produce, less expensive tools that were accurate enough to get the job done. They are changing the model now with more expensive tools, but the old stuff still works. I have the drill press, and an old Jointer from HF. Neither have any whistles or bells, both just do the basic job and keep working. Very simple, usually easy to repair too. No complaints here for the price.

I'm looking at a bigger drill press from HF, but this is the information I needed. Thank you.

I commented on your review of the HF belt/disc sander, mentioning that for many people the option is HF or no tool. I was excited to see ypur review because I have this drill press, too. I bought it from a guy for $30 about 3 years ago, so it is likely 6+ years old. I turn it on and it spins and makes holes in wood. Just like the sander, when one has realistic expectations of what the machine can do and what can be done to make it more functional in an individual's situation, it is a great addition to the shop. The only time I wished I had a different one was when I built a table where the base was 4 inches thick and needed a hole for a mortise but the drill press was too small. Still, I made the hole with a hand drill and it worked fine. I jist can't see dedicating the floor space to a large machine. I store this one on a shelf under my work bench. Your review is honest and useful. I will look forward to your drill press table build! Thanks.

I've have this drill press for about 2 years now and I love it, is just perfect for the type of work I do around the shop. The led light tip is a cool addition I might do that when mine runs out. Great video!

I have the next size up 10" 12 speed (Tabletop) and have used it for years. These are a great bargain. I also Added Steve Ramsey's drill press table.

Jim, appreciate the review of the lowest end Harbor Freight drill press. I happen to have this same model and am reasonably happy with it for what I need. Jim, one thing, its biggest drawback, setting table height. Without a geared post, this can be a frustrating task, especially if you need to set it accurately. It can be almost impossible to raise or lower the table without rotating it at the same time, and then hold it steady while tightening it in place. I also have issues with the depth stop which is cheap and undependable. Still, you are right. It's a good usable tool for the price. Thank you.

I hear good things about the WEN

I just started putting together a shop to work out of and my wife surprised me tonight with this Drill Press. Thanks for the review, I was a little hesitant to unbox and set it up because of the comparisons to the WEN and wasn't sure if this press would be worth it. Your video has changed my mind on that.

Haha, my wife surprised me with mine, as well. I VERY frequently use mine for putting pin and weight reduction holes in high carbon steel knives, and it still runs great.

I subscribed as soon as you said you had the tool for three years. Most of these guys use a tool for maybe an hour and post reviews as if they really know it. Thanks for actually knowing what you're talking about. I just pick up this drill press for $35 from someone that used it once and it sat in their garage since. I was already think of building a bigger table, so I'm watching that video next. Any thoughts on changing the table angle bolt to something like what's used for the table height?

Offset the drill block. Thats the only thing that I wish I had done differently.

Hi Jim, my drill press is about the same as your accepting that it is a floor machine. I have had it about 40 years and it was second hand when I got it I have made a table for it and that was an excellent upgrade, in all the time I have had it I have never moved the table from the 90* mark. I have had to replace one of the bearings in the gear reduction part and I super glued the three parts in after they kept falling out. I hope you get as much work out of yours. I know the new ones come with all sorts of “upgrades” but that entire means is there is something more

I have an electronic square. Works great. Also put a wing not on the table tilt. You are not going to break any speed records but it is great.

Thank you for your advice and for your review man I greatly appreciate it! I've been debating on which on to my to assist me with my building of 80% lowers, would this also be a good tool to drill out aluminum with out any issues? As well as polymer?

The depth stop on mine is all plastic and bends easily. I wish I had gotten the next higher model for the geared post and deeper throat. For $54 new, it's been a good value. Someday I might make a depth stop that works.

I picked up one of these about 25 years ago. It was painted green and had a nice keyless chuck, but otherwise was the same. It was an absolute tank. The only time I ever managed to stall it was drilling a 2 3/4" forstner bit into purple heart. The only issue I ever had with it was it size. I constantly needed more capacity, so I unfortunately replaced it with a larger Delta. That Delta has been the biggest piece of crap in my shop. It doesn't stall, because the chuck can't hold anything. I replaced the chuck with a keyless one and that worked better. But now the whole thing has fallen apart. I might just replace it with one of the Harbor Freight floor models.

Considering one of these to drill mesh from sheet metal for the line of work I want to do.

At 4:43 you canclearly see the slop in tollerence as the forsner bit shifts with torque to one side. That said it's still totallu useable for the type of shop work shown here in this video. I am considering buying one. If I was doing metal work I would get one of the many old cast units frequently found on craigslist at around the $200 mark

The main issue that still irritates me about mine is the quill has a lot of front to back slop. Even the left to right slop required removing the quill, polishing the set screw groove, and rounding the end of that one set screw better than it was. It was rough enough to be gouging into the quill. I've seen one potential solution of adding nylon or brass set screws in that axis, except the on/off switch is in the way, which would suck to remove every time I want to adjust those. I'm considering some kind of spring loaded mechanism added in behind the side light's switch panel.

I agree, Jim great review! I have a nice floor drill press which works great for me! It would actually be nice for a smaller drill press for secondary operations! I sound like a full blown machine shop.....lol That is how my mind works. Always looking for the most efficient way to get the job done!!

LastingBuild it will be on an episode of tiny shops some day..lol. It is approximately 12 X 25 with a garage door on each in as a drive through.. I moved from Kansas a few years ago for my job. I gave up a 30 X 50 shop I built myself, That was a tough transition. Working in the aircraft business you learn a lot about lean manufacturing. So I have to apply the basic principles as much as possible.. I still have a lot of pack rat in me I just have to be creative , Lol! have a blessed weekend Jim thanks again for taking the time to do your videos...

I have considered picking this drill press up but I would be using it for metal & wood. How well does it do when drilling metal? What would the thickest you would advise for this drill press.

I just got mine the other day, and one thing I noticed is the bottom side set screw that holds the headstock to the pipe snugs up fine, but the one above that screws all the way thru until it falls out of the threads and down inside the pipe. There's a small rod/pin that protrudes from the back inside the collar of the headstock that stops the pipe from travelling upward any further, but the screw thread is above that. Was yours the same way?

I've had the HF 13" floor press for nearly 15 years, still use it regularly, it may not be fancy or pretty but it works very well for the price I paid back then.

I'm considering this press for 1 1/2" holes in hemlock boards for bluebird houses. In your opinion would it work well with that big of a bit? Thanks in advance and appreciate the review

Thanks for making this video. I purchased this 8 inch drill press a couple of days ago, watched your video and was up and running in ten minutes. Well sort of. Even at the slowest speed (760 rpm) it stalls constantly. There is decent tension on belt with about .5 inch of play, any suggestions?

Have you tried drilling through any thick steel? I’m sure I would have to take my time but I’m wondering if this could drill through 1/4 inch steel decently

One frustration I forgot to mention is I haven’t found a chuck key that fits perfectly! I bought it used and it didn’t come with the key. Anyone know where I can find one?

My came with one, but since I tend to misplace things, I bought a two sizes, ratcheted one from HF. The larger size fits perfectly. The ratcheting is handy, too.

I have the same one, broke the depth stop on it about a year ago and adjusting the table can be a hassle.

What brand of forstner bit do you use? I recently bought an Irwin Marples 1 1/4 and it barely makes a good cut without jamming up. Takes a good few minutes to get a hole in a 2x4 even after sharpening it. Also bought a cheap 2 3/4 one and that one sucks too but I figured cause it was off amazon. Would love to have a 1 3/4-2in forstner bit cut like that on my HF drill Press

I was going to buy the Wen press, but HF has the 8in for $55 right now. So I figure, I'll try it. I only have 1 functioning arm, so I'm not sure itll work for me. But drilling 90° perfectly has been impossible without a press... no matter what "hacks" or tools I've tried.

@@lastingbuild1373 I do have a question about that... Do you think changing the belt could be done with 1 arm? Or, would it be thrown off in some way if it was tilted tilted? Like could I mount it to a flip table? I just find that certain tools ( router table, or miter saw) are easier for me to adjust in different positions... I'm not sure if a drill press can be flipped like that though.

Hey yall. Im getting kicked i purchased one about 3 months ago. My chuck seems too small. How do i attach that thing?

Does this have the capability of drilling through a 4x4 in one pass? It doesn't look like it has the height. If you put a long bit on it that has to go 3-1/2", you still need enough clearance to get the 4x4 under the bit. I guess one could flip the piece over to drill from the opposite side as long as the marks for the holes are pretty exact. The other issue is using something to support the long end so it stays level.

The plastic depth gauge broke on mine after no time at all and they dont offer a replacement.

Try screwing drill press to your workbench, assuring the belt is tight and assuring your chuck is tight. Thats all I know to do.

I bought this drill press about 6 months ago. When I try to use it it will not turn unless I get it started by hand. It’s in a none heated garage but it hasn’t been that cold here in ND. Tried it yesterday and i could not get it to turn on its own. Any ideas out there?

I've wondered that too. Possibly if you remove the depth stop attached on the bottom of the quill, but not sure if that has the standard diameter for those mortise squaring attachments.

Are you hiring a cue card guy or more importantly a post audio guy to compress your dialog with a 1:5 ratio, medium attack, medium release? I'm thinking I might go with the Grizzly Baby 8".

I have one and the bit doesn’t stay stable it shifts to side and you’ll not get a good results, Bit wiggles a lot.

Can this drill metal?

Don't bother. This trash will just get you killed. I've done a couple of "projects" on softer metals with this thing and was pulling my hair the whole time. The "metal column" on this thing is made out of chinesium and you will dent it with a set screw. It's actually quite pathetic.

If you run the cutter too fast it can overheat from friction, or vibrate from running a really wide tool. If you run it too slow, you either take too big a "bite" per revolution, and stress the blade, or go really slow drilling.

Also, it'll bog down on bigger cuts if it's going to fast. The belt will slip.

Gauging concentricity...by eye. That's a neat trick. Impossible, but you saw it here, folks. Silly me, when this was first said I imagined drilled holes in steel measured with gage pins. My fault. This is a joke of a machine; yet a fine starter press for a kid. If you only care about punching through some wood, really, doesn't matter what you use. Even a POS like this with a less powerful motor than a flexshaft grinder, 2-inch quill travel, deflection everywhere, and enough runout to be called a blender will do the job. It's wood.
