Harald Hardrada: Varangian, Crusader, Viking (Old Norse Saga Song)

Ойын-сауық

Here’s another Old Norse song, composed and performed by me - the latest in my Sagas in Song series. It is based on the Saga of Harald Hardrada by Snorri Sturluson.
Harald Hardrada (lit. Harald the Harsh-Ruler - there are many interpretations/possible translations of this name, but I think Harsh-Ruler is probably the best) was, essentially, an absolute chad. Of all the Norwegian kings and heroes from the sagas, he’s probably my all-time favourite. He achieved and did more in his life than most people could only dream of doing in several lifetimes. For the purposes of the song, I’ve picked out some of the highlights of his life as told in the saga.
He fought with his half-brother St Olaf II at Stiklestad aged only 15, went east to Kievan Rus and Constantinople not long afterwards and quickly became the prime Varangian Guardsman for the Byzantine Empire. In this role, he fought many wars (too many to include in one song), but his mightiest achievements in this role were probably against the Bulgarian uprisings (which is how he gained the name “Bulgar Burner” - how friendly!).
He fought the Saracens in the Middle East and Africa, visited all the Holy Sites in Palestine, became the King of Norway and beat back the Danes and Swedes, all the while composing some wonderful Skaldic poetry.
Then, if all that wasn’t enough, he tried his hand at invading England with Harold Godwinson’s treacherous brother, Tostig. This appears to have been a step too far, as he was killed early in the battle by an arrow to the windpipe.
I hope you enjoy. Please subscribe if you’d like to see more!

Lyrics:
Kom ek í eldsheim
Mikilmennska lá fyrir mér
Frá barnaldri emk á vígvelli
sem snær á fjalltindi.
Á leitum mikins orðstírs
fór ek Austrveginn
Vegrinn mik fǿrði til Hólmgarðs
ok þaðan inn til Miklagarðs.
Kom ek á fund Zóe dróttningar
ok eið henni svarða ek dýran
ok þá til míns þýddusk Væringjar
ok kusu þeir mik til Hǫfðingja!
Heill, Haraldr Harðráði!
Mikli norðmannakonungr!
Verndari var hann Miklagarðs
yfir Væringjum hǫfðingi!
Berserkr var hann í bardaga
Skáld fyrir máttigum dróttnum

Berjumk ek í ǫndurða fylking

Heill, Haraldr Harðráði!

I feel your ending of the song is perfect. Like he does all this from the river jordan in palastine to his home in Norway he fought and raged and all this. But when he gets to england he without armor fighting with some saxon earl he just takes an arrow to the throat... it feels like its a story that ends way to abruptly.

To most people who know of him, Harald was an upstart who tried and failed to conquer England. When you know his real history, you realize that this man was a true legend of his age, even though he lost his final and arguably greatest Conquest. He needs more attention, and one could hope that one day they'll make a great film about his life.

The King who avenged his father's death by conquering Denmark, but decided to not punish the Danes but defend them against the Heathens. Who at first persued vengence against the Trønders, but then was persuaded to forgive them and became known as Magnus the Good! The King who wished to conquer England and reclaim the North Sea Empire under Norrthman rule (as opposed to Danish rule), but decided against it after learning of the English King's journey and Christian piety. The world would have been a very different place if Harald had won against both William of Normandy and Harold Harold Godwinson and in the timeline, Harald would be probably called King Harald I, the Varangian King of England

I love hearing songs about my ancestors. And since other people have been asked to provide proof of such claims, I'm a descendant of Philip the Magnanimous, Landgrave of Hesse, through his 2nd wife, Margarethe. Philip's mother was descended from the dukes of Mecklenburg, and Magnus I of Mecklenburg was the son of Euphemia of Sweden, who was daughter of Ingeborg of Denmark. From Ingeborg, it's a straight paternal line to Harald. So assuming the claims of paternity along that line are true, I am in fact a descendent of Harald.

@@SkaldBard I'm working on a Constructed language that basically is Middle English with Norse Influence. The lore is basically this: "Harold Haddrada received a message from a villager that lived in Mercia about Godwinson army coming to ambush him, then, Haddrada got ready, and ambushed Godwinson's Army in Stanford bridge. Instead of killing Godwinson, Hadrada took Godwinson as a captive with him to York. After knowing that Willian the Norman was moving his troops near East Anglia, Hadrada convinced Godwinson to tell his men to come with him, then, Haddrada also made it to ambush Willian in London, and it was a blessed victory! Normany needed to pay 2000 silver pounds to the United Kingdom of Norway and England In Winchester, and a monument with Christ crowning Hadrada was build in Winchester.
