    Harald had a interesting life, specially for the time. Military command in modern day Ukraine/Russia, campaigning with the Byzantines all over the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean and becoming the King of Norway, before dying in a invasion of England. Few men from his time could claim such a extraordinary life and knowing so many places and cultures

    Well it appears that there are several options to each "adventure", I really doubt amongst all the speculation that even a fraction is true (the last perhaps). I think Harold's travels should named "The less probable proclaimed outcome's for a guy named (Mythologized) as Harold". When you hear words and phrases like, supposedly and...according to saga's, it loses a lot of credibility 🤕you know what saga's are right?👀👀

    +Provocateur Good reason for that. This maneuver is called a single envelopment, and it would've caused damage by bringing in units from a different direction, causing slaughter because most of the time people only realize that they are attacked from one direction. It's like you're wrestling someone and your opponent's dog goes bite your leg.

    Predrag Nikolic Unlikely. The vikings had already conqured england a feew years prior but lost it after one generation of rule. And on numerous times during the viking age the vikings establsihed kingdoms in the british isles. All were Short lived. There is little reason to believe this time it would be any different. Likely England would have cut ties with Norway after the death of Harald and continued Saxon rule. England as a result would likely have much stronger Anglo Saxon influence today than they do in our timeline as the Norman's revolutionized English society on all levels.

    You need a 1066 series. Perhaps in the style of game of thrones with harrold’s story happening in (tandem much like Dannie’s) with it all pulling together in England in 1066. All the stuff with House Godwin in England is equally fascinating and the rise of William the Bastard in Normandy. :)

  • @SuperOllie1993
    @SuperOllie19934 жыл бұрын

    When you learn about 1066 and the Norman Conquest, you just see Harald as that other guy who lost to the English right before they themselves were defeated by William. I didn't know that he was this incredible warrior who lived an amazing life, and was probably the ultimate badass of the day. Thanks for the awesome video!

  • @custink22

    Yep. William the Conqueror was the kill stealer. Seriously, Godwinson was a badass to have force marched across the country to defeat Hardrada and then force march unrested back across the country to face off against the Normans and fight them almost to a standstill, if not a win. But, Hardrada could have won at Stamford Bridge had his troops been prepared. They nearly fought Godwinson to a draw while unarmored and unprepared. They possibly could have beaten William, had they beaten Godwinson. Dont get me wrong, William was a very able commander on his own, but i think he was outclassed by both of these guys and just picked off the scraps from their battle.

    It's interesting, the more I learn about the viking age the more I see what the TV show haphazardly "copy-pasta'd" from other heroes into their own little thing. If they followed the actual historical route Hadrada took I'd say the plot would be even better, but then again, this is long before the TV show's date is supposed to come into effect.

    Point taken, but even if he had won and got to be king of England, won't that had encouraged more Norse invasions in the future, to claim the right to the throne of England? Just a thought.

    Viking expeditions had become very rare by the start of the 11th century, mostly because christianity was being increasingly accepted in Scandinavia. So no, I doubt the Norse would be encouraged to invade like they used to.

    Tobias That's true that there was a drop and from what I know, Harald Hardrada's invasion was the last of the major ones by the Norse. So yeah, maybe as you said, would not have made much of an impact if Harald Hardrada had won the crown of England. It wouldn't have lasted or made a major impact as the Normans did.

    When I was 12, I found that book in my mother's library: "Byzance" in french ( "Byzantium" in english)... around 1 000 pages ... reading such a monument looked to me like the challenge of a lifetime... so I did read it. It was so good, I didi it in a week ! It was about a young prince from Norway who ended up at Kiev after a disastrous battle and became later the chief of the imperial Gard in Constantinople ... I was so amazed by the story, the description of Byzantium and the exploits of that young and invincible Harald, it never occurs to me that his adventures had a real historical ground. Until almost 30 years later, I saw that video and connected that Harald Hardrada was in fact, the same Harald Sigurdsson from my favorite book of my teenager years !

    I really enjoyed this naval battle video! Please soon make a video on the naval battles of Yi Sun Shin. In the late 1500s, Yi defeated the more numerous Japanese naval forces with technology (turtle boats) and tactics, cutting resupply lines and forcing a retreat of Japanese Samurai land forces who'd all but conquered the Korean kingdom's land resistance forces. 3 or 4 key naval battles won Yi the war, so it would even be a great series of videos! Also, an interesting excursion out of European history. I look forward to all your videos! Thanks for the great work.

    Harald's death at the battle of stamford bridge is often considered the end of the vikings. He was such a mercenary legend that his death ended an entire legacy

    A most excellent video, yet again! Your Scandinavian/Viking battles are amongst your best work, in my opinion. Would love if you could increase your output of content, because although k&g gets more press, the way you describe the political situation leading up to these battles is second to none. I also love your artwork, maps, and battle mechanics more than any other channel. Keep it up!

    Sweyn Estridsen is quite similar to Antigonus Gonatas both were middling generals who fought and were bested by much better generals but at the end of the day it was them and not their most gifted opponents who ended ruling a kingdom, dying in their bed and founding an stable dynasty, even their opponents were similar Pyrrhus and Harald, talented, restless and reckless, both dying in battle in middle of a conquest campaign.

    This channel is a perfect addition to what Sabaton are doing with their music! Sabaton often focus a bit more on myth and heroic legend, while BazBattles has a great grasp of the details. No we add Iron Maiden for the overall view and we have the perfect history lesson!
