    @@unfunnyandunoriginal8452 Well its more terror than horror. Horror scares you, making you want to escape(fight or flight) and terror is the sense of uneasiness and not belonging, the feeling of dread, being lost in the dark with strange noises, exploring abandoned buildings, knowing something is watching you, etc. Without terror inducing environments, jump scares and such would not be scary. This game is terrifying but not very horrifying.

Everything dies, and only you survive. You have to cause their deaths. The smiles: Toxic positivity. Literally forced to wear a smile, and torn apart by negative emotions. The dog: Loss. Constantly separated from your dog, constantly having to trudge along. You can’t see past the fields, the other side, etc. The statue: Depression. Trapped, dark, alone, hanging. The finale: Illness. Everything is here. Its grip doesn’t leave you. Morning: Drugs. A coping mechanism. It kills you.

    I kinda think Manly's right, I think the big smily face is _trying_ to help. Its failing, and it has a twisted idea of early _how_ to help, but it does seem to be generally on the MC's side. It has a sinister air to it, but its actions generally seem to be positive, if from a twisted perspective and with twisted ideas of happiness. It's _trying_, it just seems to have an alien idea of how to make the kid happy and what happiness even is.

    It seemed like most of these scenes were metaphors for things going on in the mind, I think the happy entity was “killing” bad memories and thoughts and replacing them with “happy” ones. I think it’s happening as he’s falling from a building he jumped off of, there’s a lot of gravity and falling effects and the final scene is him splattered on the ground.

    The ending section had a whole vibe of "being trapped by happy people" like when you feel like you shouldn't feel anything bad because all the happy people around say you have no reason to. The actual ending felt kinda meta, like the player actually ended up trapping the character inside the computer for personal enjoyment or whatever, like guilt-tripping you for playing through the game.

    I think the best interpretation of the ending is that the main character was trying to forget the childhood trauma of losing the dog but the last puzzle represented having to accept that as a part of life after growing up with the "waking up" segment being about remembering the happiness that came with the dog in their childhood while the body on the floor represented going "numb" with ones emotions as an adult after taking medication to deal with the trauma spent as a child and feeling trapped in trying to truly express emotion: which is being happy.

  • @Hellobunni

    @Hellobunni

    This is interesting but I feel like the interpretation manly gave at the end was pretty close to what they were going for because although yes, it is a terrible and long lasting to any person or child to lose a childhood pet, this world is really demented for it to solely revolve around the loss of a childhood pet that only makes an appearance in the third nightmare and wasn’t involved at all in the first 2 nightmare segments. That is something any and all children whose owned a pet faces at some point, it’s an unavoidable fact of life, so why would that turmoil alone cause such a disturbing and nightmarishly intricate dream world into what is thought to be their adult years? Definitely feel like the story was probably hinting at more than just a childhood pet loss being the root of the characters issues

    I used to have night terrors almost every night from the time I was very young up until the age of 13. My nightmares unironically looked similar to this. The triggers, like flashing lights, sporadic and violent movements, and barely human-looking figures were frighteningly similar. Even black figures with white faces looking at you in almost complete darkness. I had one *exactly* like that when I was 4 or 5. This is all too familiar for me.

  • @CreoTan
    @CreoTan2 жыл бұрын

    I really think the entire game is what’s happening in this person’s mind as they die from a suicidal drug overdose. Like, it’s about a person who was deeply traumatized and depressed, and spent their entire life trying to convince themselves that they were happy-and the smiling face that was looking over each dream was THEM, their own mind, controlling the perception of these memories, trying to find happiness as they slowly die, the dreams being a nightmare hallucination fueled by the drugs. They likely blamed their depression on the things they lost as a child-the ball, doll, and dog. With the belief that if they just had those things back, they wouldn’t be miserable (and they were likely ignoring the other aspects of their trauma, like the bullying). The whole game is, in this sense, this person fighting against themselves, trying to find some scrap of true happiness in their final moments, but knowing deep down that it’s futile. It’s about someone who wants a simple solution to solve their trauma and depression, who tries as hard as they can to convince themselves a simple solution is possible, but they know it will never BE that simple in reality. The “if I just had what I lost I’ll be happy” is equated to the suicide itself in that way, in thinking that suicide is an “easy” escape. The game says that, no, suicide isn’t an easy escape-for this character, it was a horrific, drawn out parade of mortal terror and they consistently wanted to LIVE through it. But they’re too far gone to go back, and they just have to ride out the awful experience until the end. And even in the end, they can’t do anything but continue to convince themselves they made the right choice, even when they know they’re trapped and know they’re regretting it.

    I'm fairly confident Manly nailed the story at the end there, but it's also kind of unimportant to me in this instance. The major appeal of this game is its visuals, the story is just an excuse to allow this insanity to happen and I believe that works in its favor. It's all twisted in the best way, this game's got some strong moments of just disturbing you. I'm not forgetting that bunny segment anytime soon.

  • @FluffyDragonDrawing

    Agreed, the story is secondary to the game; but I appreciate it because it does drive the game forward without it feeling forced. There's enough to provide a satisfaction of getting something done, and a drive to continue. But it's clearly not the focus and I appreciate that.

    @@soc7967 This is a year late and I don't have the time to type much right now, but basically everything in the game is a metaphor for something that happened to the kid (actually a late teen or young adult) viewed through the metaphor of his chronic depression and anxiety. Even his earliest childhood memories of playing with toys seemed unusually unpleasant, hinting at abuse and/or improper care from adults that are noticeably absent from most of the game. There are some positive moments, like getting support from a small friend group, distracting himself with soccer, and even some pleasurable trips (until he overdoses). However, in the end, it's seemingly all just a dying man's dream - with the implication that his immortal soul does NOT find the peace he wants.

And adults around ophens try to be crazy positive to not hurt them more then they are already hurting, but sometimes it can backfire and make the child feel like a outcast. Just a theory though.

    The last nightmare really did something to me... Seeing a friend going on the other side (that sadly being death) at such a young age and trying desperately to make them come back only to be pushed away by the reality of things and the fear of the unknown...

    So I think the character at the ends death is caused by a overdose. From what I heard when you overdose it feels like overwhelming euphoria, then you die.

    This game reminds me of one of my acid trips. I was in a hotel room with my friends, it was at about 8-9 hours mark so that was right at the end of the trip, my body was so fatigued but I just couldn’t sleep because the acid was still in my system, I was half-asleep, everytime I closed my eyes I would see dream like images or videos and it would be terrified things all sort of crazy stuff I could never think of, it was horrific.

    This weirdly reminds me of my childhood...I used to have really bad nightmares...my nom always called them night terrors, I would wake up screaming and crying about weird things that I couldn't really remember until I saw this...I always had dreams about bad things happening to me or my parents, probably something similar to this game but I still cant remember. This game brought back some repressed memories...and I oddly really like this game because of that

    What I'm getting from this is that the big ol' happy face is an entity that feeds on traumatic memories and fears, and is currently feeding on the kid. The "happy" stuff is a result of the entity trying to make it drag out for as long as it can, so it can feed more. I dunno dude, this is SUPER weird, but god, do I love creative horror.

    A lot of reoccurring themes here, a lot of decapitation and dismemberment, the dog keeps going underground, the whole time he is trying to retrieve lost things, the happy face keeps forcing him to sleep with some electrocution. I'm wondering if he's condemned after killing the other kid who stole his ball, burying his dog alive, and maybe poisoning the bunny? Not sure on that middle one, or any really, just throwing stuff out there.

    Oof ouch i feel like this game called me out specifically. I have borderline and depression (diagnosed by a professional) and i have a uh habit of coping through engaging with materials from my childhood. Like, today I literally ordered the sims: bustin out on gamecube because it was one of my favorite games. Problem is, most of the things from my childhood have like, traumas around them. Like with certain video games I have memories of playing them to drown out fighting. But! Don't feel bad, I'm in therapy, I'm doing some genuine, constructive inner child work when I can, things are getting better, I don't talk to the family who hurt me, and every single day I get stronger. Things can and do get better.

    It was a weird and eerie trip throughout the gameplay, but I've enjoyed this. Indeed, it initially seemed as if there was a separate entity that was helping the boy retrieve those precious things that he'd lost, despite having to go through such harrowing situations. But that final segment suddenly put us in our place. Giving us an ending that is "happy", instead of happy.

    The dog section and the suicide hit me so hard, as someone with severe PTSD who lost many pets and desperately wanted to go back to happier times. Honestly I'm crying just thinking about it. There's a lot of depth and symbolism to this game, where at the core there is childhood trauma... and it does a disturbingly amazing job of portraying it.

    Through out the game I was kinda thinking it was ment to represent some sort of trauma and the happy thing I was kinda trying to make the kid happy again up until the ending where it was just him reliving his happiest memories with a dark twist which tbh makes a bit of sense like his happiest memories and things he held dear to his heart also held some bad ones
