We review the Hantek 6022be oscilloscope and see if is is any good for automotive diagnostics. We put the Hantek 6022be through some basic automotive diagnostics tests. Does it stack up against my favourite oscilloscope the 2204A? We will test CAN Bus, MAF sensor, relative compression check and diesel injector signals. Hantek also market an automotive oscilloscope called the Hantek 1008c, it has 8 channels! I have heard mixed reviews about this scope so never did buy it...

That was a great video, as usual. I actually have the 1008C. It was my 1st PC based scope and I have no idea why it has 8 channels. It's a great example of "you get what you pay for". I don't regret buying it, I understand what it is. I also have a Pico 2205A running the automotive software. What a difference. My goal is to actually get a 4 channel Pico like the 4425A but it's not in the budget right now. Keep up the good work, your videos are extremely helpful

Another awesome video Darren, Thank you as ever, i had watched this several times before, and you've guessed it, i have a Hantek DSO 3064A (4 channel) scope, i bought the longer leads to facilitate my work on it, it's def not the best on the market,i guess the old saying is true; 'You only get what you pay for' but i have sort of managed to accommodate it's quirky nature somewhat, it appears to do most of what i need, so can't complain esp the price i paid for it, the accessories were quite cheap too (longer leads+Clamps etc, compared to the top end Pico which is several Grand ! i have found a way round the fast disappearing screen data when doing certain task's like relative compression,,,🤔,, i discovered a snow white kitten in my garden at home, apparently strayed a tad too far from it's home? after knocking on all the surrounding neighbours doors to no success,as no-one appeared to have lost a kitten, i have adopted it, after seeing your Cat (wednesday) i have named it 'Lonely' and am presently training it to sit in the car and wind over the engine whilst i'm on the computer under the bonnet 🙂 will update on my success with domesticating the rather nervous little moggy. 😾

HT6022BE with the HANTEK software is limited for automotive use. But it is HScope supported with full Automotive Mode buffer that holds minutes of data, not in pages either but a seamless stream! Add a 4x attenuator as I've designed and you have +/-20v input friendly for automotive work. All this for $50 scope and a $10 HScope licence. Not bad...

Under the set up menu is a record function that will record for very long periods of time , also when you wish to load a saved file it should be in the hantek folder unless you changed to a different folder. Also the hscope app for Android is excellent . I use both on a routine basis as a technician and I will say there is a learning curve but the more you use it the easier it gets , not a Pico or ats but with overlays and experience it is a very good option.

I do mechanic work for a living now. Well I've just recently gotten started, but I needed a cheap scope to get going, so I got the Hantek 1008c on Amazon with the CC65 clamp and some extra cables, an attenuator and a secondary ignition probe all for under 200 bucks. I will say, as long as you don't use more than 2 or 3 channels at a time, it actually works pretty well. I mean, you can for example get your crank, cam, and tdc sensor all on screen at once with nice detail. Now some waveforms such as ignition, well I wouldn't try to do more than primary and secondary at the same time. But overall, the scope is super helpful sometimes, I mean for what I payed for it, it has more than paid for itself. It's not gonna be as good as say a 4 channel Pico 4425, but that is also a 2000 dollar kit so...

If you haven't heard of Hscope it's a fantastic android app made by Martin Loren for using hantec and other budget scopes, including diy scopes. There's a separate Automotive package on it too with new features being added constantly like cylinder overlay, pwm etc. It's really intuitive to use, just pinch and zoom basically. Can be used on any android phone or tablet. I'd love to see how you get on with using it, especially after just proving all the shortfalls of the original software. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Trigger mode auto is not your friend, try single, or even norm and you should be able to capture the cranking. Trigger on rising edge. Auto triggering will trigger even without a signal present, which might explain the waveform jumping around. I think the Hantek tries to capture as many samples as it can, that fit on one screen. That keeps you from zooming out, since the data just isn't there, but you can zoom in. There's some other open source software available for the Hantek that you might want to try. I tried using Sigrok Pulseview and it's okay, but tailored more to digital data capture devices. It will let you convert an analog capture from a scope into a digital signal pretty well. That's when it really shines, all the serial decoders are awesome. I haven't tried the open Hantek software yet.

I found that once I updated to the latest software, the scope was a better performer. I used to get alot of crashes with the old software. Not with the updated version though. The 6074BE has 250mhz. And a sample rate of 1GS/s. For a cheap scope it's not too bad and it does the job. But its still not up to scratch compared to the feature/option levels of the pico. On my 6074BE scope I can do a RC test using the single trigger sweep option and I can get a very clear capture of the waveform. and it remains locked on the screen so I can take my time to walk around and dissect the capture

I know it's an old video but the curved bit on the square wave might just be to do with the probe lead that needs adjusting. Cheap probes don't have them but a decent probe will have a trimmer that alters the capacitance. This squares off the signal and is frequency dependent. Trying to trigger a constantly changing data stream on CAN bus just ain't gonna work. To get a constant display on the screen it's a repetitive signal you need to be monitoring. Learn how they work.

It obviously depends what you are looking at a CAN bus waveform for. 99% of the time it's to see if it's distorted. If a specific ID or packet that needs to be viewed then a logic analyser is better than a scope. The PICO is far better than the Hantek but it is a tad more expensive. The Hantek is usable for auto but does have limitations especially when trying to do CAM / crank on something like a modern transit with the CKP signal being Hall effect and very narrow compared to the wider CAM signal. I did admit I am probably using the trigger wrong. Apparently it doesn’t work so well on Auto Trigger mode. The sample rate really isn’t great, and the compensation won’t correct the triangle effect on the CAN, it might be more square in a lower time base as the samples are used more effectively. The stock software isn’t great in my opinion; Open Hantek is an option but have tried to get this working with windows 10 with no avail! I did just buy a license for HScope, so will post a video of that soon, with both my 6022be and 1008c. This is all my opinion, and the truth is I bought this scope years ago (way before MM). I had a go with it, was a bit underwhelmed with the UI so it stayed in the box. The cheap Pico is really worth the extra; performance and software wise. But for the money, this does do the job with a little extra patience and compromise. Keep an eye for my HScope video 😁

@@MechanicMindset It's not only using wrong trigger mode. You are using wrong time div scale, wrong trigger level, wrong probe multiplier, wrong buffer view etc. The oscilloscope is triggering on the signal which is far on the left outside of the view you are looking at, that's why the signal is jumping around even if the auto trigger worked. You are looking far away from the place in the buffer where there was the trigger point. The pulses you are examining are far away from the pulses that activated the trigger. For example, if there are many pulses and you trigger at pulse number 1 and then scroll at the pulse number 100 (which is what you are doing) then, of course, the position of the pulse number 100 would jump around because the duration of all the pulses before is changing. There is a mark in the x axis where you have to watch the triggered signal. You are saving the vaweform as .txt file and then you are trying to open it as .rfc file - how could that work? As I said, 150 kHz bandwidth $20 DSO150 is enough for troubleshooting high speed CAN BUS if you know what you are doing. This oscilloscope is overkill for what you've been using it for and it has more than enough bandwidth (sample rate) for the signals you are capturing. Square pulse has infinite bandwidth and both 10 MHz and 100 MHz oscilloscope would show the square wave as a triangle (expecially when using the wrong time div) but that isn't important. You must know how the square wave looks like if the cutoff frequency is 100 MHz or 20 MHz or 200 kHz or 100 kHz. For example 100 megasamples means the oscilloscope could capture SINE wave signal up to almost 50 MHz but every square wave pulse has INFINITE bandwidth - you would have to capture the sine waves up to hunreds of MHz to see the square wave signal as peftect pulses. BTW, switch the probe to x10 to get less distortion because x1 has more capacitance. And you can use the compensation capacitance knob on the probe while capturing the CAN signal, you are not limited in using the test signal only when compensating the probe. I don't have that oscilloscope but I was not only checking the high speed CAN signal by using just DSO150 which is a toy, I was decoding the traffic using it :-) If you are complaining when using 1000 times better 6022 for the tasks you did in the video then you are doing it wrong.

@@MechanicMindset And there is one more very important thing - you don't want to set the time div scale to capture many pulses and to THEN freeze the buffer (pause the picture) and to change the time scale only then - after capturing. In that case it is to be expected to get very distorted waveform because there aren't many sample points during the one signal period. That way you fill the buffer with samples and then you are using only 10% or 5% of the sampled values to analyse the waveform. You want to FIRST set the time div scale to use the full buffer for capturing the pulse (or a few pulses) of interest only and then there will be many sample points inside one captured pulse and the waveform will look much better if not perfect.

haha, looks like he had more patience than me! Another way to do it (as Gibby mentioned), use a single shot trigger and it should automatically stop the scope when the trigger threshold is reached - need to have a play. I am also going to look at getting HScope, that seems to be the way to go with this 6022be. Keep it up with the scope, it will all come together the more you play with it. Thanks for watching!

You buy something basic (DIY) quality and expect it to be of dealership professional quality, same line driving a VW beetle and you expect it to drive like a Golf 8 GTI. From the beginning your attitude towards the Hantek was negative.

For £35 I wasn’t expecting great things from this oscilloscope. But it did everything we asked of it right? The software is what lets it down. As far as basic ‘DIY’ tools go, spend a little more for a PicoScope 2204A and you have a very powerful tool for the money!

I purchased a 6022BE product. Then I feel like a waste of money. It does not meet the standards of a technical device . Hardware . It is only capable of receiving + - 5Vdd . Signals larger than +- 5 Vdd will have amplitude distortion. Amplitude distortion is displayed on the screen. It does not achieve +-20V visibility like grid cell. Software . It's the dumbest show in the world. It has no drift mode. Like hospital electrocardiogram machines. When I want to research a long event . For example I set the timebas to 1000 seconds. Hanteck runs in the background and doesn't show anything. Until the scale is 1000 seconds, it will show up on the screen. For 1000 seconds, I couldn't see anything and went to wait for coffee. If the numbers reach explosive danger, then I don't know either. Because Hantek shows nothing on the screen. Hanteck should only install microphones for babies alo hello!

Haha, I agree with the long time base problem. Have you tried an alternative software? I think for the purpose of automotive diagnostics, it’s ok. But Pico is my preferred scope. For such a cheap price, I am not sure what we should expect? 👍

I dont think this is a fair test, you are complaining of the resolution on the compression test but it doesnt look like you calibrated the scope before you started, and you are complaining it refreshes too fast but you arent using the single window capture feature. Everything is a piece of shit until you know how to use it

Hi, for sure, there are some features I didn’t take advantage of here which I will revisit. I think I will even look at alternative software. But please don’t mistake my observations for complaining 👍
