Great video Darren. I bought a so called rugged mobile phone with an inbuilt FLIR thermal camera a few years ago which turned out to be the perfect choice for me as a mobile mechanic. I needed a mobile phone at the same time I bought it so buying that phone proved to be much cheaper than buying the camera and the mobile separately. Now this phone has been replaced with several never models so the price has dropped considerably. If you buy it now it will be almost like buying a thermal camera with a free mobile smart phone (4G Android 10).

@@HelgiThorisson Ah awesome, I saw them a while back, right after I bought the Seek Pro for iPhone (and yes, it was about the same price 😵). Is it the Caterpillar phone? I think it does a good overlay with the normal camera too?

@@MechanicMindset No, it is Ulefone Armor 9 and it has a great Samsung camera too. I bought it with an endoscope and a body cam that has night vision. The accessories have proven to be well worth the money spent. The endoscope is much better than some than some others that I have seen. Regarding the night vison body cam you can position the phone in front of your eyes and the camera pointed at what you want to see and you can continue working during a blackout for that matter.

FWIW, the suggestion I received that started me thinking about this was to use a US 25-cent coin and an oscilloscope probe. I hadn't considered using a back probe. It makes me wonder if I could just get a piece of metal stock and weld, braze, or solder it to a metal rod with a banana connector on the other end to use as a handle.

With every clip I watch I'm becoming more and more interested in buying that picoscope. Dude, the possibilities! Say you get a car that has that annoying ever-so-slight twitch every once in a while, indicating a misfire but not enough for there to be a DTC. Air leak? Bad spark? High temp? Injectors? Coils? This type of diagnosis, and combined with your other vid on how to test ignition coils, makes it sooooooooo easy to in, say, 15mins?, completely exclude the ignition AND fuel system directly above the cylinders. Amazing, no more half-arsed guessing. Just comparing each coil and injector. The moment I get that picoscope I'll be amp-clamping every single part I can get my hands on haha

As a retired BMW Master Technician I told my sons, to be the best technician in the shop, they need to learn electrical properties, principles and systems, and you will be the most sought after technician in the shop, because I found during my tenure in a shop, that most technicians fall short on knowing the fundamentals on how electrical systems work, and how electronics works, so my sons have both become very very good at electrical sytstems, and both of them have become top employees in the business and their companies and have been able to basically name their price for their hourly pay, due to their high demand and knowledge as a technician. 😎👍
