Just would like to point something interesting about Confucius. In the ancient past, no one like Confucius regarded himself as Chinese because there was no such thing as a nation or the idea of "China" at all. It's the same as how people didn't regard themselves as Vietnamese or living in "Vietnam". These are modern terms to distinguish people even with a mutually shared culture. Sure its easier but I think its also important to separate the ancient history with modern history. I wouldn't necessarily call Confucius' teachings "Chinese" as his influence is mutually shared amongst the whole of East Asia. His teachings were also not all that original either. What Confucius did was look to antiquity and wrote down traditions, laws, ethics and morals which elites in his past practised and help spread and revive these ideas during turmoil within the state. His main ideas were to present what it means to be Efflorescent (Hoa) instead of Barbarian (Man). Many Vietnamese elites throughout its history saw themselves as upholders of Efflorescence through Confucian teaching while for instance during Qing-era China (17th Century - 20th Century), the Chinese were constantly criticised by Vietnamese elites for straying away from his teachings and following what was viewed as illegitimate Manchu practices.

@@denniscallan I have had a 40 year career in aquaculture. I was in Art and Dance when I last saw you. The first business was at Lokoea, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond in Haleiwa. We made a subsistence living there for 3 years. I actually published a book with UH Press called, “Tide and Current: Fishponds of Hawvai’i.” Then I consulted for several years w the State and National Park Service and w activists on Molokai. We later developed a shrimp broodstock company at NELHA on the Big Island. I went to Hanoi because our customer owned farms in Halong Bay. Wild ride for this hippie girl artist. I’ve done things I didn’t have the skills for like writing EAs, EISs and Feasibility studies. I had to learn fast. This life was not intentional, life moved me along. All I wanted to do was be an illustrator. Go figure. People ask how I came to do this work, I say be careful who you marry. 🤣 I think of you and smile cause you are a terrific person. I’m glad you lead a fascinating life. If ever on the Big Island contact me. You have my email. What about you? What is your life like these days?
