Hank Williams wrote this song for Bill Lister to record. Since Hank couldn't read or write music, he had to record demos on acetate discs. It was Bill Lister who found this acetate in his attic in San Antonio, TX as mentioned by others, and contacted Hank Jr, who was only 3 when his dad died. The video is the key to this recording, the storm was added to hide the pops and scratches from the original acetate disc.

@@RockN2Country The video was definitely a very special part of this song. It has a long backstory as it was an unreleased song of Hank Sr. that was found 50 years or so later. It was the first video to take footage from a long ago show of Hank Sr. and merge it into a new video of today. You should look up the history on this song. Enjoyed the video, keep em coming!

The video of Hank Sr was from about 1942 with the Grand Old Opry stars being taped for the Kate Smith Show in NYC. His lip movements were computer altered which was brand new technology in the 80s. This won CMA video of the year the first year it was offered.

Really fun song, it makes me miss moseying down dirt roads in Jeff Davis County TX. It's the scene straight out of an old Western movie, with only two radio stations playing old classics like this. Time didn't change things out there and these songs surely fit the mood. Now I'm longing for a road trip!

Hank Jr was 3 when Sr passed. Sr wrote and recorded it, then In the late 80s Jr rerecorded it. When Jr recorded it, he had auto of Sr singing mixed with it. Check out the official music video Jr released with this recording... Mix of both singing and playing "together". It's definitely a cool song/video, but you can definitely tell how far technology has come since the late 80s. Haha ❤️🐘❤️

The original version was written and recorded by Hank Williams during one of his Nashvillesessions in 1950-51, but he decided against releasing it. It was not until many years later, in 1989, that the original song would get its first official release. The song was recorded by Bill Lister, who later gave the demo by Hank Williams to Hank's son.

No honey his Dad died when Jr was too young. He was just a kid. This was very special to Hank Jr to be able to sing with his Dad. An experience he thought he'd never have. When he wasnt old enough to shave he was singing his Dad's songs and when he first went on the road his producers etc. had him only singing his Dad's songs. Like he was a Hank impersonator. He had to really buck the system to make his own music.

You should check it out (just for yourself). I assume having a video went a long way in choosing which song he released. DON Hank Williams sr die January 1, 1953 at age 29 Hank Williams jr was 3 years old at the time in 1988 and old friend of hank Williams sr was in his attic and came across something called acid tape that had the song on it he had forgotten about this song the original recording was just hank Williams sr and acoustic guitar so he calls hank jr out of the blue and tells him about the song when hank jr gets the song he never heard it before no one in Nashville has ever heard it before so hank jr writes the music for the song and add his voice to the new duet hank Williams jr won a lot of awards for the video and the song in 1989 in the music video there singing side by side hank Williams sr is 27 years old in the video clip he was originally singing hay good looking in the clip but computer's made it look like he's singing there a tear in my beer the funny thing about the video is hank sr is 27 and hank jr was 39 in the video

Its been 3 decades since I heard this. CMT played the video a few times daily back then.I think it was in the top 20. I remember it seemed to me that Hank Sr. Was the more compelling of the two to watch singing.

I love Jr but this song sucks. Gimmicky as hell they put his dad on it. Good job on your end though, Don

@Logan Schrapf Thanks for the kind words toward me! As for the song, I don't mind that they tried something different. I imagine if Hank Jr. thought it was a gimmick he wouldn't have done it, so maybe there was some meaning in it for him. Not sure how it all went down, but anytime you mess with someone as iconic as Hank Sr. it's a risk.

I disagree. The original was lacking and Jr. brought some life into it.
