I find the problem with people doing KZread nowadays is their lack of strategy. They come up with ideas and upload them and post them straight away. They may be motivated for a couple months and may upload 40 videos in that time. 40 videos could be 40 or 20 weeks instead of 2/3 months. Batch and post consistently (in my case I also use a bit of Famester to make my content viral instantly). Don't post everything straight away, post it on the same day/time every week. This also helps avoid burn out...

Hank talking about their podcast not being on video: 1) Amazing imitation of John 2) I love the people who animate bits of their podcast, so actually you can "turn it into something" 3) In general I think the reason John and Hank aren't burned out on the vlogbrothers channel specifically is that they don't care about increasing their audience and aren't under that pressure like other creators are.

I love the question, "what's your new zero?" I recently came to the realization that almost all youtubers are like ceos, forever concerned about maximizing shareholder profit; and the profit is mix of literal monetary value and the views, the thought of more people seeing you then last time. Not many youtubers really talk about either value, especially the latter. But the ones that do talk about it say that the view counter is like a drug, a true cycle that can be addictive

There were a couple in particular where Hank was being interviewed by 4 people who were all very excited to talk to him and show off how funny and smart they were. 😂 everyone was constantly talking over each other, at some points there were two seperate conversations happening. The videos were super hard for me to follow. Colin and Samir’s video is my favorite of all the LA podcasts by far, it felt way less like the floor of the New York stock exchange and more like a regular conversation 😊

This is an interesting episode. Fundamentally I don't think a person who up until last year ran multiple mid size companies can conceptualise what a union for content creators would look like because his experience with working is tied to ownership of his ideas or working independently. I would love to know how a bunch of KZreadrs with under 10,000 subscribers would conceptualise fair working conditions for the company that host their videos.

I had recently come across Hank via some of his science nerd videos and liked his presentations and lack of moneygrubbing clickbaitness. KZread recommended this video. Since it has literally been years since I watched any longer form vids, TV, streaming stuff, etc. except for some game playthroughs I thought I'd just drop in for a short time to see what the KZread 'issues' were. I'm halfway through so far and this may be a sea change shift in my online viewing. Thanks for the adult, but entertaining, conversation! p.s. I was born in 1955

Listening at the 1:50:00-ish mark. My college surprisingly made a new degree very quickly. But I think it was more out of foresite then them being reactionary. Still at the early days of the web, I wanted to work as a web designer. Neither that or development was a thing. So my classes were a mix of computer science and graphic design. They literally took my schedule and made it a new web development degree right before I graduated. They did pull me into a meeting to tell me this. No, they did not let me get that degree.

It doesn’t take cancer to think of your past selves as dead, gone from the world and only unique from other dead people in that your current self remembers your old self from an inside perspective. This is something I’ve thought about a lot, since our personality, our cells, our perspectives and opinions, they update and cycle out and we become just someone who used to know our old self intimately. I dropped what I was doing and gaped to hear this notion come from someone else…when I’ve brought it up to others It’s been clear that it’s not a normal way to think of our younger self.

You should check out Hank's XOXO talk from (I think) 2014, it's on KZread. It's basically all about not letting your past self's identity and dreams dictate who you are and what you want to work towards currently. The talk itself isn't amazing when it comes to the technicalities of public speaking but the ideas are expressed very clearly and it had a big impact on me and how I approach certain things in my life.
