HANK GILPIN

Ойын-сауық

Hank Gilpin is an American furniture maker and wood sculptor. He is known for using distinctive types of wood.
He has been designing and building fine art furniture for almost 30 years. A native of Connecticut, Gilpin graduated from Boston University with a degree in photojournalism. He served in Vietnam as an army photographer, and returned to the States with the intention to study photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. A random choice of electives led Gilpin to woodworking, and his first teacher (and future mentor) was Tage Frid.
Gilpin is best known for his traditional, sturdy benches, which he builds from his home shop--a converted church. He works entirely in solid wood, utilizing many domestic species and relying on extensive hand-tool work to produce his classic styles. His love of wood and trees has led to a parallel career in horticulture, and he now designs gardens and landscapes as well as furniture.

Hank Gilipin influenced my experience with building. "I can do this!" Exposure to domestic woods is important in middle America as we have a wide variety. I have milled my own and support local sawyers. I marvel at the grain patterns and what happens as wood ages. (like me ,LOL!) Thanks for showing me this path in my woodworking journey!

My grandfather had a huge stand of sumac on his property of which he harvested, dried, and used for inlay. When he passed in ‘89 at the age of 97, I inherited all his offcuts among other things. The sumac, hill pine, locust etc. still awaits my retirement.

man after my own heart. i found some throw away cuts of some termite ridden wood. turns out after drying, cleaning, cutting, it had the most character of any other wood i've worked with. it also happened to be spalted and slightly curly.
