The series of events beginning at around 2:22 -- (1) Mike Campbell looking over at Jeff Lynne, casually wondering if he'll remember to cover the harmony on "I'll clean it up myself I guess" (they had virtually zero rehearsal for this thing), and (2) Lynne not only doing so but completely knocking it out of the park, and (3) Campbell's look of delight registering on his face, and (4) the poignantly ceremonious quasi-curtsey he does to get Lynne's attention, so he might thank him and convey his appreciation in this moment -- he knows it's the only chance he'll ever have to do this, and (5) the cut to Petty's delivery of the _Sweet Smell of Success_ line, one of the quintessential late George lines, wherein Petty, unknowing, perfectly captures the spirit of what just transpired -- it's the line that elicits Orbison's wry smile in the video, and (6) the perfect appurtenance of Petty's earthy pelvic thrust on the kick of beat four of the measure, a model Beatlesism if ever there was (it reminds me of John's approval of the cello's blue flat seventh that intrudes on Paul's "Yesterday") -- is an illustration of what George Martin must have felt the day he realized that the world would be listening to his little band in two hundred years.

Dylan has never publicly stated why he did not participate. His then-current tour concluded a week prior to the tribute concert, so there was no conflict with dates from that. He was tentatively expected to take part, but about two weeks prior to the event, he announced without further explanation that he would be unable to be there. Possibly he was simply too exhausted from his own tour to perform, or maybe it was just too emotional for him. Or perhaps he was just “being Dylan” and decided the best way to honor his friend was not to get on a stage in front of the world, but to do so in other, quieter ways. Dylan did do a version of “Something” during his tour in George’s memory that same year
