Glad you found my lost putty knife! Good job! Great tip on using the Scotch Brite pads with the Dremel, with washers to give the pads a little support.

Wow what a steal for $10. The putty knife looks great, nice job. Also it was really nice to meet you at the Jacktown show and put a face to the voice. Hope we meet again. Thanks

Thanks Tony! I was surprised at the great turn-out for ScoutCrafter's meet-up! Maybe I'll see you again at the July show!
Well done! Nice finds too! It takes me about 15 stops at garage sales but I usually find one that has good tools for good prices. I have a box of putty knives (about a dozen) I need to get on. I think your video is getting my motivation started! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Todd! Going to yard sales is like a treasure hunt for me. The engine shows are almost not fair - all the good treasure is in one place! LOL Putty knives are simple to clean up, but the older ones come out looking sweet!
Another great restoration. Thanks for all your videos.

came out beautiful.
Lol, i am going to buy from maniacs more often....who would have thought that gem was buried in there. The plane identifier web site looks great. But leafing through old catalogs searching for info on old tools is half the fun. Cheers

That's a nice transformation. I was waiting for the .357 case to be embedded, but it was in really good shape under all that gunk.

The shell case is a good idea! I'll have to try that on something that needs a new wood handle.

@@357magdad well I stole the idea from your utility knife vid!
That turned out great, very nicely done. I love the method you used here, anything that weights care over speed I'm in favour of. Also congrats on those three items! Man you got a good deal there, I'm a woodworker so I'm dead jealous.

@@357magdad Yeah they do, I've made one or two from generic nylon abrasives in the past for something quick but I think I'll try using the real thing since clearly they hold together better! Gotta figure a good way to punch them out too, think I have some steel curtain rod around I could sharpen the edge of like you did with the exhaust adaptor.
Awesome brother

What a surprise those brass pins. And the wood came out great. I just can't imagine why someone would paint over that. I guess it was someone's workhorse knife for a while.
@357magdad

Thanks Steve! I was worried the red paint wouldn't sand out. Red seems to be the toughest color to get out of wood.
You're pretty much the only guy I know that could make a video about a putty knife interesting. I just recently made a similar comment to another KZreadr about a pair of scissors. LOL. Anyways, I'm amazed at how nice that handle came out. I wonder what type of wood it could be. Too light to be walnut. Teak maybe? Did Red Devil use a makers mark? Oh, and I always wondered what the difference is between a putty knife and a puddy knife.
@357magdad
5 жыл бұрын
Putty (puddy?) knives are pretty simple, but I thought the transformation was worth sharing! I've had some red devils that were marked on the blade. The handle looked like it was painted red on this one - so who knows?
Also what a steal on them planes!...

I know right? I get a lot of satisfaction finding an ugly duckling like this and making it a swan!
The brass pins do indeed suggest that the putty knife is a higher quality item. But does the blade have an appropriate amount of flex?

I would say yes.
