I think that's why most people watch anything like this on KZread. You really think the vast majority of his 109,000 subscribers are nearly as experienced or skilled as this man? The answer is no. The vast majority come here for inspiration. Anyone else who is afraid to admit that will never be this good at any one thing in their life because they are clearly afraid of mockery or failure. The hard road to success is filled with people who disagree with you and moments of failure. Don't be afraid of failure, it is a strong learning tool and vital to most success stories. Thank you for sharing your positivity and keep well.

Having something real like this craft is key tho u gotta hang your hat up at the end of the day and it feels better doing it if you're wore out from wearing it know what I mean I'm a carpenter not an axe man but when I get done and take the bags off and head home for the day it feels good to know we put in a good day. I got a problem tho I spend so much time watching car videos on KZread and never do any automotive stuff myself

No such thing as "a weird way" when simply stating observing another man doing his thing and being interested in it is calming. The opposite is also true, watching somebody freak out and anxious and unsure about what they're doing can impart negative feelings as well. It's not weird to feel human bud.

Hello friends just want to chime in. The flick is very effective. Im getting older and past injuries tend to slow us down. I bought into the mindset heavier is better like a splitting maul which flat wore me out. I eventually had to get a power splitter. After following buckin I remembered a had an old single bit axe from my grandfather. I got it out sharpened it and had at it. Let me tell you a good axe is so much easier. The flick takes some practice but “it’s deadly!” Thanks Buckin you added years to me being able to work in the woodpile!!!!

You've definitely made me appreciate axes more. I have dozens of axe heads in a milk crate I've been wanting to handle but it's so hard to find good handles for anything but the double bits. It's also hard to find small wood around here. Anyone listing free wood usually keeps the small wood to sell and just wants the big big stuff handled and gone by anyone else. So I get a lot of 2 foot and larger logs. I've passed on more than a few logs that were almost as tall as I am after they've been felled. It's sad really. I sold off all my equipment when I injured my back and moved. So the next thing I want to do is get a good flatbed trailer. Something that can haul at least 10k lbs, and then I can go out and parbuckle these big logs and bring them home to make table slabs out of. I used to run logs to a mill, and cut firewood in northern california. Up near mt shasta. I lived all around that area most of my life and the most populated tree we had in that area was douglas fir. But we also had pines, cedar, black/tan/white oaks, madrone, and redwood. I sold a lot more fir and burned a lot more pine than about anything else there. Now that I'm back east I burn a lot of pin oak, red oak, poplar which is really soft and burns fast, pecan, gum.. Those are the only ones I've been able to identify so far. We also have some pines here, cypress.. but there are many many more that I haven't touched yet, or that I've handled but didn't know what it was. I've been wanting to get my hands on some hickory or ash for handles. I also have a lot of other tools to handle. Too many projects, so much back pain.

I was raised in New Brunswick Canada. I hand split 12 cord of wood. Every year until I left home. I used an old double bladed ax that was my grandfather's. I don't think we ever sharpened it. My grandfather said a dull ax, split better than a sharp one. He made his own ax handles from ash. I miss him terribly, he forgot more about the woods than I will ever know. Which isn't surprising as he lived in it from 5 yrs old, until they took him out of the woods at 76 yrs old.

Just got ahold of a beautiful new single bit head. It's all rusted up but it has wonderful profile. I'm excited to get it cleaned up a bit and hung. Learning the flick has revolutionized my splitting. Thanx buckin!

@Buckin I started practicing the flick a lot. Today I was chopping wood over the top of gravel. Didn't hit my bit not once. The flick works! Thank you for sharing it. Helps chopping sometimes too. Throw some big chunks!

I don't like splitting wood with an AXE. But when I do I'd rather use a Bucking Billy Ray AXE

I see you had a broad ax hanging on your wall. My Dad and Brother and I used to go dig up the logging camps in Northern MN and we'd find broad axes, stamp hammers, all kinds of axes, blacksmithing tools. You name it, if it was in a logging camp we found it! I don't remember how many stamp hammers we had but the state of MN wanted his collection for a history center somewhere. When ya live in the middle of nowhere you play in the woods! I can't imagine how many cords of wood I split when I was young! It's all we ever heated with in the Northern MN -40 degree winters! Good times, and you're right. That physical work settles a guy. Great channel Buckin'!

Hey Billy Ray, I'm 64 and have burnt wood for heat all my life and have used the flick since I was a kid. It really saves the handle from hundreds of little nicks that finally eat it down. Here in Indiana, ash has always been my favorite to split. I can work on a 30" chunk by working around the outside 3", flicking off flakes down to the heart and then split through the center. My favorite splitting ax is an old cheap Chinese single with really fat cheeks and a bit of weight to it.

Dad taught that maneuver to us kids. He called it "boxing" the wood. His choice was a Plumb double bitted axe. Wish I still had that one.
