"I'm as good at sewing straight lines as I'm at anything straight in general" 🤣🤣 you're a real gem❤️ But don't worry...I'm straight and I still can't sew a straight line...I can't even draw one 😅
I just love this guy. He’s so positive and friendly. I’m more of a knitter and crochet-er. But i simply enjoy watching the likes of Gilbert and Bernedette and Karolina et al

@Jayden Callan It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy! Thank you so much you really help me out !
Holy Crap. Wow. You have changed my universe. You made a comment about automatic needle threaders, and google and then amazon were a tiny rabbit hole while I paused your video. The big reason I gave up sewing for years and years was threading a needle is impossible for me. I would rather visit a dentist to have all of my teeth removed without pain meds. You are indeed an angel in disguise. Bless you and Thank You Thank You Thank You!

I'm so glad I could help! Hopefully you'll be able to get back to sewing again soon!
Your comment about straight lines so reminded me of a college friend (Thomas) I had to share... When he saw me struggling to climb a hill in my wheelchair, he graciously helped me along. Long story short, I, innocently meaning "Please take the quickest path so I'm not late." said: "Go straight!" He said: "Never!" Then I said: "Go curve-less, then!" We nearly tumbled back down the hill from laughing and stayed friends for a long time.
One of the things I appreciate about your videos. Despite your obvious knowledge you share the simple things as clearly as the complex. As an experienced hand and machine sewist. I still learn things, or I can forward past to the point I need. But one key difference between yourself and I. I very rarely use a knot. I actively avoid them. My method is to bury the thread in the seam and do a tiny double stitch to secure it. Or leave a tail and go back to thread that through some of the beginning stitches. This is a hang over from cross stitch and embroidery. Even on buttons. No knot, just a tail which I then whip through the threads between the button and the fabric. Thank you once again for showing the basics clearly

You're so brave, I'm always paranoid about my seams ripping if I don't knot! I'm trying to get out of the habit, and I have mostly dealt with it when starting a seam, it's just the end that still gets me. I don't think I'll ever get there on buttons though!
Another solution for if you don’t have thread wax, and you don’t want to lick the thread for any reason, is you can always use a cheap lip balm. Works a treat when I’m sewing something that’s not just for me.
I have two sewing machines. And I still love handsewing. My sister hand sews her Quilt pieces too. Today was a good day my needle didn't hit my bone lol. Found my long lost thimble.!!
A THANK YOU, three years later!!!👍😄
You're my first class at Costume College Gilbert. I'm pouring over the schedule, downloading any thing and everything. I'm already exhausted and need to hit the bar! I LOVE this community!!

That's great! Thanks for coming, I'm glad that you're enjoying it!
LOL I've been hand sewing over 50 years and I never use a thimble. Of course I have skin like rhino hide so maybe that's why... :P I do enjoy your teaching. Very informative.
I enjoyed the music selection, it was so relaxing. I like the multiple angles too, I think you did really great for doing an online class when it's so much easier to gauge the tempo to go while in person to see where the class is at. Great!
Not only is this a lovely little tutorial for a novice but results in a genuinely useful item. I already know some of these stitches but will probably be doing this tutorial (and watching the vid over) once I have my hands on some felt. Thank you!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, I loved learning the new stitches, loved learning how to do the ones I kind of knew properly and it was definitely reassuring to know that the ones I had made up were true stitches and definitely acceptable! This it a video I will keep coming back to! If only you could like something more than once! Thank you so very much 🙂
I made this the day it was posted and it is by far the most useful thing i have ever had. I have carried it almost everywhere as my mobile sewing kit. 10/10 highly recommend I do plan on making another version once I get better at sewing.
So excited to make this! I have a crappy plastic needle case that is a disaster. This is so much cuter ❤️

This project is super cute! And for the life of me, I'm forever forgetting how to do a blanket stitch! LOL! I'll be back for a rewatch once I have some fabric in to make it with!

Thank you! Blanket stitch can be a bit tricky, I find it always takes me a couple of stitches to get going again if I haven't used it for a while! Good luck when you get round to yours!
OMG I am so ancient, I never thought anyone ever did anything else than lick their thread before threading! That is a lovely quilt on the back of your sofa, by the way. I'm new to thinking about historical costuming, I've come at it via standard sewing and quilting.
Lovely video I love you made special badges for beginners I have left the last one be

Your music is so soothing to listen too. Enjoying your work.
Arhhh I think I have found my favourite KZreadr ! , I love your teaching , iv been sewing since I was 6 , I used to go into my mum’s wardrobe and take her clothes off the hangers, go back into my room and make clothes for my sindys and action girls 😂 ,even made my own buttons , I’m now a very seasoned seamstress but I think your never to old to learn ❤️❤️❤️
I learned so much here! I was familiar with most of the stitches, but not very good at them. Watching you stitch, with soothing music behind your instruction, I was able to see how a neat finish is attained. I loved the extra challenges you put forth, as well. It included everyone in the sew along. A very smart idea because we all end up with a beautiful and useful item for personal use or for gifting! Thank you for a well-done video. 😊
Thank you! Have been watching needle book vids cuz I want to make some for my nieces. This is one of the best ones I’ve seen! You’re awesome. Thanks!
This was so helpful. I've been working to improve my hand sewing lately, so the timing was perfect. :)

This is lovely! Thank you! I use a wooden thimble because it has the slightest bit of give, so my needle doesn't go skittering off of it. Also, thank you for the excellent captioning!
You’re a wonderful teacher! And I love that you have close ups of the stitches. So helpful to a newbie!
Just found this very good video 10 Mar2021 and subscribed to see more. Thank you for showing that old fashioned hand sewing can be useful and attractive and that not having a sewing machine is no barrier to making things. I'm interested again in using my hands.
Bless you Gilbert Dolthalion. Your name is an adventure. Your heart is legend. Your guidance sure. ❣️
This was really helpful thank you. I've always wondered how everyone whipped corners.
How handy is this!? Thank you so much for adding in this handy basics video for those of us that are brand new to sewing and costuming. Your time is appreciated!
Thank you for the lovely calm music and great project inspiration. I've been wanting to make a needle book for my cross stitch needles as well as learn more hand stitches for garment sewing. Perfect project to meet both goals!
what a lovely tutorial! I was watching this is catch up mode, while doing something else, but you have inspired me to make a little needlebook, Thank you very much!
Hi, i liked your video a lot. I am a teacher myself since a long long time.and love the clear way you show how to do the stitches. Will be helpful for a lot of people who start this. One thing I want to mention about needlethreading. Maybe it is already said then sorry. So I wet not only my thread but also the needle opening. Somehow it always works. Is better than hairspray. Probably the wetty needleopening helps the trhead to glide through it. Just try it. Have a nice day.
Okay, so I was planning to just work on one of my many works in progress (probably crochet, not sewing), but I think I have everything to do this! And I have been wanting something fun for needle storage, so that's just serendipity. *hits pause to gather materials*
Your stitches are so precise! Thank you for a relaxing video.
Thank you! Very useful and interesting. Thanks for such good close up shots.

Thanks so much for this! Such a splendid tutorial and delightful presentation.
First time here, you popped up, will share with younger set, great close ups, refreshing to have male instructor, be safe-from usa.
You have such a lovely voice. I hope that's not weird? I love watching ASMR for people who have particularly nice voices, and you would totally fit the bill, haha.

I love the challenges!
Your last video was posted 5 months ago I see...I really enjoyed this tutorial and it would be nice to see more of these types of projects! Like how to add a zipper to for example a zipper pouch, creating pockets in a little hand bag or something like that. Like with each small project you learn more difficult things. nyways, stay blessed and hope you post something soon again. You're a good teacher! EDIT: this is my first video of you and I'm now just bingewatching to see what you have already put out there lol
This was a lovely video! (I must add, I enjoy them all...) Thank you for participating in cocovid, I am still catching up on all I missed over the weekend. I did catch the live panel on snappy dragon's channel and thought it was just wonderful.

this is really nice! i have been startinf to handsew for around the same time as you, and at first i hated the feel of thimbles so i never used them, until i found my middle finger screaming for pain and impossible to push anything specially something with layers haha now i always use one and is great how long i can sew for. Im proud to say that because i have been making so many masks, the back of my backstitches looks really neat and straight! practice for sure makes perfect :D
Thank you for the thorough and easy to follow workshop!

That was a lovely video to follow, thank you!
This was an amazing tutorial.
This was so helpful! I'm late to the game, cuz i only found you through recently watching the costuber secret Santa, but this was so helpful for whip stitching! Mine always come out crooked, but sewing along with you I got them quite parallel at the correct angle
Oh, I apologise for thinking you were doing embroidery stitches for this video! Will go look at the links! Thank you!

This was so nice to work on, thank you!
This was very helpful. I've been wanting to start sewing for a while and with this video I finally made a thing. It's horrible and full of mistakes, but hey, it's complete. Hahaha!

Beautiful! Now I have to go make one... :)
This was awesome!
Lovely video....would you consider making a video of your thimble?
Even though I have literally had the back of a needle pierce clean through my very thick fingernails, I still have a hard time with thimbles. I guess I need to go on a thimble hunt...
I am totally gross, too!! When working for other people, I use a tiny dab of glue.
hopefully the badge site will let me come back in months and use that code when I actually do the book. I love this finished work and I would like to do it.
Will this video stay up after CoCoVid for future reference?

Yes, I have no intention of taking it down!
Very useful and encouraging instruction, I truly appreciated it, thank you!
Afternoon Gilbert, I am new to your channel but learning so much already just from this video alone, look forward to watch other videos especially embroidery ones, as i am broadening my sewing skills, I am very familiar with whip stitch and invisible join stitch as I am a crocheter I have a question if I may how long will this video stay up for? Im not a natural hand sewer so id like to have good opportunity to get chance to make one Gem -x-x-
Have you/ Could you do a video on how to make a leather thimble? I currently use a metal one, but I don't love it all that much.
@Dolthalion

Honestly, I used Bernadette's video to make mine, so I highly recommend that. But since so many people have been asking I might bump it into a sewing dictionary video, since it'll be nice and short!
Try not licking the thread, it plumps it up, wet the needle eye...it’s amazing. 🇨🇦
I store my needles stuck in bar of soap!
👍🏻👍🏻
I sew a little weird, using my index finger to push the needle through, so that's where I wear my thimble. I simply cannot get the hang of using my middle finger for it!

Very informative and easy to follow! I always want to do hand sewing in my projects but I feel as thought I am hindered due to my sweaty hands. Any tips on how to hold and manipulate a needle/thread and fabric with sweaty hands?
@arianahernandez3932

My hands sweat a bit too, especially when working on something small like cross-stitching; I always work with a wee fan on low and I’ll take short breaks and splay my fingers in front of the fan to cool off. This is also very helpful to break my hyperfocus and check my posture or take a sip of tea :3
« you’ll end up stabbing ist anyway, that’s just a fact of life » I’m going to say this to my family in the future, they just don’t understand what I keep « hurting myself » 🤦🏻😁
🥰
The silly one ones are also good for odd and larger fingers.
Interesting, I only just realised that I use all these stitches and yet didn't know what they were called since I'm mostly self taught and depending on what I was mending/sewing would determine what stitch I would do. I'll probably forget and have to come back to recheck since I have selective memory, I can remember song lyrics and recognise actors/actresses on films from other films but I struggle to remember the actuals names 😅
The only good thing about covid is videos to make up for events that I don't have enough money to go to
Hi there Gilbert, I'm new to this way of learning to sew (from videos). I need a pattern or size for the individual pieces of felt that you are sewing into this needle case. Can you please give some suggestions?
When I get some felt, I will make a needle book. I've never used a thimble and have calluses (both left and right hands) instead. I tried adapting my sewing to use a thimble, but all that happens is I start using my other hand as I stich with both hands. This is how myself as a 7 year old child. Do you know if there are thimbles that are very small? For a child, or me with child like hands. I've made a leather one, but I think It's too late for me.

I know that some of the other Costubers were talking about having the same issue with tiny fingers, but I really can't remember who they are right now. Part of the reason I like the leather ones, though, is that I can make them to fit, since I'm on the other end of the scale to you! And I sewed without a thimble for 20+ years before I taught myself to use one, so don't give up just yet!

I have a clover small leather thimble it fits really well when im warm but not so well when im cold so put some whip stitch just tightern a little on 1 side only time its bit awkward to wear with long finger nail tip but handy for pins
Apparently I’m pretty gross as well. I have threaders but I’m more likely to just lick it and I’m waiting on the leather thimbles I ordered to arrived!
I’m good at the running stitch but I don’t know how to make a Barbie outfit step by step!!!!
what's a felling stitch?
