Hand Forged Damascus Ring
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Second attempt at making damascus steel by hand, this time forging 1070 high carbon and mild steel from the scrap bin to make a ring.
First weld went decently without any delamination or cracks between the layers, second weld after the hot cut at 3:05
didn't worked that well... Not sure about the cause, maybe the scales or the heat, would have been better if I repeated the
cleaning and stick welding process instead of trying it hot. Next time!
Pretty sure is not a problem for the use of this damascus, it survived the quench without falling apart,
enough for me and I still love the end result!
Index of operation and materials:
0:04 Mild steel
0:07 1070 high carbon steel
0:11 Grinding faces to bare metal with 2x72 and hand held magnet
0:51 Cleaning with acetone and stacking alternating 1070 and mild steel
1:17 Stick welding, rebar piece as handle
1:41 Coke forge
1:52 Borax flux
3:05 Hot cutting almost all the way
3:18 Folding in half adding borax
3:48 Grinding to clean metal (normalized off camera)
4:27 Rough size with wrench
4:37 Metal cutting band saw
5:00 Marking material to remove with compass (center punched off camera)
5:10 Drilling out most of the material up to the biggest drill bit I have
5:50 Grinding excess material off with grinding bit on the drill press
6:35 Grinding outer diameter on 2x72 by eye
7:20 Spinning the ring in a drill makes for a decently consistent od
7:57 Sanding up to 1000 grit on the belt grinder
8:20 Bolt with a notch to hold sandpaper and sand inner diameter up to 1000 grit
8:53 Hardening to improve pattern contrast, heating with map gas torch and quenching in oil
9:26 Sanging again every surface up to 1000 grit
9:37 Etching in ferric chloride, three cycles of 10 min each scrubbing in between under running water
Off camera I also sanded one last time up to 1200 grit and polished with cotton wheel and fine polishing compound.

I do love your channel and love everything you make :) I want to make a suggestion - when making a ring, instead of drilling and grinding in order to make the circle, how about - just cut strips of the metal and then - hammer them into a shape of a ring. Downside - there will be a seam. Upside - You can make maybe 30 or 40 rings with the material you had. I used to make rings in the past, here is a video showing the approach: kzread.info/dash/bejne/na171ZKfe8_Yp6w.html Whatever you do, keep having fun and I keep watching :)

I see you making things like this I am amazed at how far you've come. I found this channel when you made your 2x72 grinder while I was researching building one myself. That was what 2 years ago? I think you only had a couple thousand subs while working in that tiny little room and I loved watching your tools evolve. You made the grinder to shape metal and then you could make blades. You made crucibles for casting parts .disc & grinders allowed knives making with stock removal. Then you restored a anvil, customized hammers, forge, cut off tools and tongs. Then you could start forging. Now look at what you're doing. Homemade Damascus? Stellar work brother.

The ring turned out really nice. Thank you for showing us the process.
Beautiful, as always. I really like the simplicity of your Damascus projects. You made this ringmaking look so easy!
Cool. I like the way you did all this with only simple tools
Love the ring . Thanx 4 the processes. I liked that you have h.treated and oil quenched it. That gives it truer validity.
Really nice work man, as always. Would love to see more attempts with damascus :)
My precious
Well done sir! And yes please do share more of these types of projects!
This is truly wonderful work man! Most of all, I admire your patience! Many people, including myself, would get it done just to get it done. But you invest the time to get it done right, even if it means doing it several times. Great job!
This dude is a beast. I wonder if all you negative critics would be willing to upload your videos. I doubt it. Just give my man props!!! He's a cannon!!!
Хорошая работа. p.s. 00:40 Магнит нужно положить в полиэтиленовый пакет, тогда можно будет легко очистить его от стружки.
I love Watching all of your videos
Simple and elegant! Perfect job considering how many people use the automatic press. I'm in love with your skills 😍
True work its represented by the artist hands. Work like that dont come with clean hands. You have my admiration for what you're doing. Good luck in the future.

Why is that tapping sound so nice? It is like a massage for your ears, lol.
i know that feeling yo, when you get down to those last few steps and you can't wait to see what all your hard work brought out congrats man nice work.
Excellent! Creating something beautiful is art and you sir are an artist.
Now that's the kind of ring that I would love to own 🤙💪.
Haven't tried making a ring yet but have made other jewelry. Collecting a coffee can of failures and cut offs from success for later. 😊 gave it a 👍
ganzissimo! Il damasco è veramente troppo figo! Dovresti farci un pennato!
Great job, as always!! 👍

Can you explain more of your process? The description is great but we need more!!
Very beautiful and well done this ring congratulations 👏👏👏👏👏
thanks for showing & sharing that
Awesome ring Great job
Like these silent movies. I probably support you on patron if you talked in them and was silent in path movies
Awesome work sir.
Awesome ring 👍
Now I really want one!
Very cool ring. I would wear that instead of a gold or silver one anytime!!
Very nice, I made a wedding ring out of a stainless steel jam nut. I don't have any any of the fancy tools you used or knowledge of the different chemicals. just a course rat tail file and a couple of different grits of sandpaper. I used a metal engraver to carve my wedding date on it in Anglo Saxon runes like in the Lord of the Rings movies. It not as perfectly round as your ring but it's a one of a kind and l am proud of it.
Great job! I have a question for you. I followed the process you suggested. One of the two rings I made was oxidized in contact with the skin, while the other was ok (two different people). How do you suggest to solve this problem? Thanks a lot. Alessandro from Italy
I dont know how you do it. I'm thinking about how much hammering it takes to forge something like damascus and my arm hurts with just the thought.
Really cool ring it looks amazing next if you make another one try screw or twisted damascus make layers of braided wire or something crazy 😁👍👍
I love watching these videos. I also know that I will never have the skill or materials to do this. That said, I would LOVE it if you would put commentary in as a text overlay (like how long did you heat the ring? How long did it sit in the ferric chloride?). I want to learn, even if I’m never going to do.
Amazing Damascus ring Sir. Next time you could make a titanium ring. Very Cool !!!!!!
saudações do Brasil + like. existem muitas maneiras de se fazer anéis. e muitos materiais.
That was awesome
You this is one Master
Amazing work love from Tehran.
awesome work...very nice
Pretty frikkin cool!
My lord of the rings ring looms just like that shape. With the flat ends and curved outsides. This must be how they made it.
Very very good!!!
Thats beautiful
Amigo pedi a algum Brasileiro pra divulgar seu produtos que , aqui no Brasil , vai vender e muito parabéns pela obra de arte !!!
Can you try a start to finish only hand forged ring? I'm practicing getting better at loss calculations and grinding time removal on my pieces but not doing great. AWESOME video!
