Hampton city council approved the sale of the Hampton Roads Regional Jail to the City of Portsmouth. Hampton is the last of five cities required to sign off on the deal. The jail closed in April and Portsmouth wants to buy the facility for 32 million dollars. From that sale, Hampton will walk away with 8 million dollars. The city council also approved a resolution to join the Western Tidewater Regional Jail Authority which includes Suffolk, Isle of Wight, and Franklin. That jail started taking in Hampton inmates after the Hampton Roads Regional Jail closed. It'll cost Hampton 5 million to join that authority.
