I like learning simple solutions like this if you don't have a toggle or anything. nice, simple and effective.

Great video, thanks a lot. I was thinking about running the soft shackle through the tunnel on the gathered end of the hammock. You can then store suspension and hammock separately, change different suspensions and also directly tie the fixed eye of the whoopie sling to the webbing using becket hitch.

I did a basically equivalent setup, but hopelessly overengineered: the main ridgeline is a big UCR, with the ends left attached to the tarp (via soft-shackles, just in case I want to shift it to pitch it diamond/square/whatever else), then separate lines around the trees that are basically like giant soft-shackles: they have a fixed loop spliced into one end, and a couple of overhand knots in the other: I just loop them through the main suspension then shove the knot through the loop (if it's a small tree and a really short pitch, I just pull some more rope through and tie it off to get the tree loop smaller). It has the advantage that the adjustability is essentially wherever I want it: I leave the surplus UCR rope trailing across the tarp and vaguely looped over at the far end, so I can reach it wherever I happen to be at the time. The separate end-ropes also have the advantage that it massively reduces the friction when re-centering it, since you don't need to pull it around the whole tree.

I have a hammock, but have never gone hammock camping before, so please excuse my ignorance. There must be a reason to use an intermediary loop, so why is it a bad idea to just tie the webbing into Becket Hitch directly through the Whoopie Sling? Now that I think about it, it would potentially defeat the adjustability, right?

That's exactly the point: Without that intermediate loop you would loose the adjustability of the Whoopie Sling, defeating its usefulness. You can tie a Becket hitch with the tree hugging webbing directly to your continuous loop on the hammock. No hardware at all needed, full adjustability, just long enough webbing is needed. Try it.

@@19ghost73 This is great information!! I am switching to Whoopie Slings because I have had to replace my webbing-straps every year. And finding 20 foot webbing is getting to become a pain in the butt. I can buy a 100ft length section of Amsteel-blue and make my own 20ft whoopie slings that rate higher for tensile strength, are more durable and a heck of a lot lighter and smaller than 20ft straps. The only sucky part is that I still need to carry at least 5ft straps to go around the tree...possibly 10ft straps if I 'm camping in old growth areas. But great info, thank you so much!

Great info! I tried the soft shackle doubled and larks-headed onto the strap, though, and it tightened down so hard that it was impossible to adjust and darn hard to undo. Tried it while camping, and it provided a bit of middle of the night difficulty. Didn't have time to experiment then, but I will try the line through the loop only and see how that works. Thanks.

Hello Jeff! I have a question about soft shackle trick you showed at 3:30: why to use whoopie sling at all, if you can already adjust the length by moving your soft shackle up and down the strap?

Same reason people use a toggle and marlin spike hitch to connect the whoopie, why not just connect eh hammock with a marlin spike hitch?? Because he whoopy is lighter that webbing and allows adjustment. I was just showing the options and versatility, you can do it however you ever want.
