Just a thought....Tree straps are recommended and some states only permit 2- 3 inch webbing around trees for suspension purposes, no rope only set-ups. Climbing webbing wrapped around tree bark and then connect rope to the webbing, saves the outer skins of our Standing Tree Brothers. Cheers!

I really enjoyed this brother. The hammock/tarp setup is probably my favorite for the very few cooler months here in South Florida, but without the swarms of mosquitos, it's perfect for a short term stay. Of the three tarps featured, the Aquaquest would be the best for conditions here and I love the total a-frame coverage it provided over the hammock. Thanks my friend!

Thanks brother. It’s been awhile since I have run one. Some of the land here is anything but flat, so there is definitely some practicality to it. My thinking is to have have the flexibility to either use the hammock or camp on the ground, depending on the area. I have been going through my gear to balance things out and see what makes the most sense in the overall loadout. Have a good one!

Awesome video showing the different tarps. My preference is a 10'x10' tarp that can be raised into "porch mode" with some poles crafted from the landscape and hanging the hammock so that it a good height for sitting (about 18-20 inches) off the ground. If rain rolls in, you have a comfortable place to sit and hang out. I scored a complete USGI shelter half set, and have been wondering how it will fly over a hammock, as well as putting 2 plash palatka together to see how well that would do over a hammock. Keep the videos coming Jess!

Love your videos! I run a prusik knot on the line running from the tree and attached the tarp to it. you have the ability to adjust it there. I also use a ridge line on the hammock so when I tie it to the tree it doesn't matter how tight the line is or how high on the tree, the hammock has the same U shape every time. You just have to adjust the first time like you want it. I attach the tarp to the hammock ends when taking down and storing. I have made a stuff sack to fit them together. That way when I set it up I just move to the prusik knot and adjust. I use small spring loaded s clamps or toggle to attach to prusik knot. Quick to deploy. Again I enjoy your videos and have learned many things and grateful for it!

Hi Jess .. Nice .. thanks. It's always good to test and trial run gear before 'taking it out in anger'. Failing to do so and going 'cold turkey' could result in one cold and miserable turkey 😏. Coverage .. my opinion is to rather err on the side of too much than too little. One often doesn't take wind into consideration. Sailing too close to it can result then again, in a cold and wet turkey 😁. Going into the Festive Season, instead of being one, I prefer mine served up hot on a platter with all of the garnishing. Until next time, take care my friend .. Tommy

Nice setups Jess. Good to see the 3 different tarps in place. For your hammock attachment to the tree, try some webbing on the tree to a becket hitch at the loop at the hammock.Gets rid of the toggles and carabiners, still is infinitely adjustable and lighter. Nate

Water is likely finding its way into that hammock :) A simple ridge like on the hammock itself will stop most of that sag :) with most of these setups. It's not real bushcrafty but bungees keep the tarp from being stressed in a wind by taking the shock out. If you want warmth hang a woobie from your ridge line and close the ends under the tarp.

I have the D&D tarp. It has really long tie out loops. I got on Hammock Gears website on their DIY link. Purchased their tie out lines and plastic adjustment locks. I stitched those on the tie out loops of the tarp and leave the tie out lines on the tarp at all times. Makes for very quick set up. It basically turned a $65 tarp into their $400 tarp, just not as lightweight. Add an under quilt and top quilt, makes for a great winter setup that doesn’t weigh much.

I wonder if you were carrying a dedicated hammock tarp anyway, but then added the sarma cloak as a hammock sock from your Ridgeline. I mean, obviously, the whole hammock isn't gonna fit, and there'd be a gap in the zippers (good to vent your breath moisture) but it might be worth the try. You'd benefit from the reflective heat (heck, add a uco candle lantern depending on how close the Ridgeline is to your face). Let the tarp shed the weather. My 2 cents I've been looking at the sarma cloak since you first introduced it. They're in stock again, just hemming and hawing over the price. ;-) cheers

Yes, I usually carry a 3x3, with the cloak as rainwear and bivvy. It has a really good effect over the hammock, even with some gaps. Nice idea on the candle. The sarma is great either, insulated or uninsulated. Cheers

Prussic knots work best when the size of the line used for the prussic knot is slightly smaller than the line they are attached to. Using the same size line for both and they tend to slip. If you go too small on the prussic it tends to jamb tight and is hard to move. If you are going to use paracord for the ridge line, I recommend # 36 bank line for the prussic knots. If you want to use paracord for the prussic then use 1/4-inch rope for the ridge line. I also recommend using a truckers hitch to get the ridge line tight.

Nice Video, thank you man. My thing at the moment is, I do not use the paracord on the Tarp, I put my trecking sticks on the corners of the parp to make a A-fraim. It works out nice, and you do not have cord to step over and of corce no tent pegs, but you need a cord atashed to the tree for getting the slag out. hope you know what I mean , sorry. ; ) it is kind of hard to explain that for me.

Love the Flecktarn. Did you get that from our friends in Finland? Which jacket is it? I’m pretty new to hammock camping, but 9x9’ is pretty much the minimum for me. I just got the DD hammock and 3x3m tarp, and went camping/small game hunting up here in Quebec. Nights were around 2-4c days were mild. I got about 36hours of steady rain, and it held up well. The hammock has a water proof bottom, so I can use it as a mini tent if I cant find good trees. Also there is two bottom layers so I can stick a ground pad in it for insulation, but I think it’s better inside. I also put an army surplus wool blanket under my bag for insulation, since I don’t have a quilt. I’m a huge fan of hammocks now. The tarp I set up pup tent style with one side up so I could see the lake, and on the colder nights, I lowered it. I think I cold weather it’s best to do it that way, but I dunno. You get so much living space under a diamond. I’m still really undecided about the suspension. Whoopie slings sound good, and compact. I got straps for now.
