It would be only a slight exaggeration to say that Alexander Hamilton invented the United States of America.
George Washington was the guiding star; Thomas Jefferson, the visionary; and Benjamin Franklin, the sage. But Hamilton was the pragmatist, the man who got it done.
This most self-made of self-made men took a country with no past and planned its future.
He was born on January 11, 1755 on the island of Nevis. This was not the Caribbean of your cruise fantasy-quite the contrary. As Ron Chernow writes in his biography of Hamilton, “While other founding fathers were reared in tidy New England villages or cosseted on baronial Virginia estates, [Hamilton] grew up in a tropical hellhole...”
Sugar plantation slave auctions were a regular feature of island life. The spectacle-buyers swinging branding irons as they surveyed the human “merchandise”-made a permanent impression on Hamilton: He was a fierce abolitionist his entire life.
Abandoned by his father at an early age, his mother died of yellow fever when he was 14, leaving the teenage boy destitute. A local judge had to buy him shoes so that he could attend her funeral.
He soon took a job as clerk for a local merchant. Before long, he was running the business-coordinating shipments of mules and codfish, calculating currency exchanges, and advising sea captains on how to deal with pirates. It was an unmatchable apprenticeship in trade, credit, and commerce.
In 1773, he arrived in New York to attend King’s College, the forerunner of today’s Columbia University. Swept up in the revolutionary fervor of his adopted country, he dropped out to join the Continental Army.
He quickly came to the attention of George Washington, who made him a staff officer. The sonless Washington called the fatherless Hamilton “my boy.” Fellow officers later remembered “Call Colonel Hamilton” as Washington’s instinctive utterance when important news arrived.
As Washington’s trusted aide, he was involved in every aspect of running the war, including actual fighting, where he distinguished himself on multiple occasions. But more than anything, it was his dealings with the weak and indecisive Continental Congress that shaped his political views.
The problem with the Congress, in Hamilton’s view, was that too few members took the idea of nationhood seriously. They quarreled over their narrow interests rather than uniting over the national interest.
As the war was winding down, Hamilton laid out the choice before the country in a widely read six-part essay. We could become a “noble and magnificent” federal republic, he wrote, “closely linked in the pursuit of a common interest…” or we could stumble ahead as a “number of petty states, with the appearance only of union…”
It was clear where Hamilton stood.

"Boy"..SERIOUSLY?! Put it in context. "My boy". A fatherless young man, a gentleman, whip-smart and capable, with great wisdom and integrity, talented and accomplished beyond his years despite his misfortunes in life, so respected and admired by Washington that he would mentor him and make him a trusted aide, colleague and friend - this is not someone Washington looked down on or patronized. "My boy" in that context, in that time, would have been an appropriate and affectionate term between men in that situation and a high compliment, especially coming from a respected older man, and surely a father-figure to Hamilton, of such distinction as Washington. So unfortunate that America lost such a great leader at such an early age - especially to a s*#t traitor like Aaron Burr. We need more leaders like Hamilton.

But the main focus should always be on the story and what can we learn from it.

@@justsomebody-1665 Most people don't like history because the way it's taught. It's dry, impersonal, distant. It doesn't usually put you in the minds of the people at the time, the reasons why people did what they did, both the good and the bad. What words mean, usually gets taught in English classes. History is about how we got to where we are. History in school was the teacher just making sure they checked the appropriate boxes for what was on the lesson plan, who cares if we actually learn something that matters. We'll just see if the students sponged up enough material to spew back out the right answers for that test. Few teachers I had didn't care of we learned or not, it was apparent to me as a student when one did and I respected those teachers, sadly none of those teachers that cared were history teachers.

@@LaughingMan_d8D Yeah, like i said before i get what you're saying. I don't disagree with you. I just think you also have to remember that all those dry boring facts are the foundation you need to understand the context in the cooler stories you want. And they probably don't have time in a 45 min class or whatever to fit all the facts and also a bunch of cool stories. But I agree more cool stories helps students pay attention and helps them be interested a LOT. I had a history teacher in college that taught that way and it was one of my favorite classes. I'm just saying I wouldnt have known wtf he was talking about if I hadn't had high school history first.

Actually, my country, of Switzerland, is ranked by most standards as the best in the world; we have among the highest quality of life, among the highest GDP per capita, the freest economy in the world, among the highest average IQ rates, among the highest degrees of development, a great patriotic sense, and have remained consistent in our ideas ever since the Sonderbund war. America USED to be comparable in many ways to America, and while it did make some improvements as time went on, it set steps back, such as with Lincoln centralizing government further, Woodrow Wilson, FDR and Nixon making the American economy less free, and everything Obama did. America is undoubtably the biggest and greatest nation in the world, but quantity != quality, and while it might be pretty up there in terms of quality, certainly ahead of our neighbors (France, England and Germany), it still is no rival to the degree of freedoms and people we have in Switzerland. At least not so until you recover what made you great in the first place, and without Ron Paul, you will not achieve so...

And pretty much his policies can be traced back to what we now call the Federal Reserve. No doubt he was a brilliant man, but you can definitely say we are living in Hamilton's world not Jeffersons. This coming from someone who lives in NYC, but desperately yearns to live as a small time farmer lol. The end of the video brings the point home though, there was a delicate balance between Jefferson's and Hamilton's vision. A certain ying and yang aspect or as JP says Chaos and Order. God, I absolutely love Hamilton. His life was interesting and his political views smart- If he were alive today and ran for President, no doubt would he would’ve won. He’s also just a relatable person, such as him being from a poor family, not having a father, being bisexual...

I'm guessing this was a backup video by PragerU, because the transcript isn't a link to their site but some random one about Hamilton. Makes sense, seeing how relatively unbiased the video is compared to almost every other video.

When Aaron Burr’s second wife sought a divorce, she chose Alexander Hamilton Jr. to be her divorce lawyer. All the paperwork was finalized on September 14, 1836. Burr later had a stroke that very same day and died.

Actually, Burr has NEVER been more sympathetic than he is now, and that's a direct result of the musical. The most popular song from that musical is Burr's. He's probably the only Broadway character that people eagerly audition for specifically. If any historical figure's reputation was damaged by the musical, it was Jefferson's. And that mainly because they changed his personality a LOT in order to fit the narrative. But Jefferson of the musical isn't the Jefferson we see through history's eyes; he's the Jefferson we see through Hamilton's eyes. And while Hamilton used to be friends with both Burr and Madison, he held nothing but contempt for Jefferson. The only time they ever agreed on anything was when Islamic terrorists threatened American properties abroad (you read that right). Jefferson took a strong stance on the defense of America against terrorism, while Burr rode the fence about it. That's the only reason Hamilton endorsed Jefferson for president over Burr. So in a musical told from Hamilton's perspective, no love would be lost on T-Jeff. But I'll tell you what, Jefferson's love of macaroni and cheese has become downright memetic, thanks to the inspiration of the musical.

It's my understanding, the evidence is mixed on firing in the air. On the one hand, some say he announced his intention to do so before the duel. Others say he did no such thing, suffered a hair-trigger discharge whilst leveling the pistol, & only later did some make up the aforementioned claim to cover for his honor. Historians will probably never know the truth. But, in any event, his was, sadly, a pointless death.

Soldierboy54b I don’t think that it is really debatable whether he announced his intention before the duel, the document he wrote and the letters to his wife all in his hand say he was intending to reserve his fire - That’s not to say Burr knew that (though I don’t think it justified what he did.) in fact burr probably didn’t know. You are right though, it was a pointless death. Even if he did throw it away instead of reserve completely, it landed in a tree far above Burr’s head, which may have meant it went off while early while he was aiming to the sky. I think you either have to believe one of the first two, or call Hamilton a liar. I think in recent years many have gone for the latter option to restore some of Burr’s honour.

In the map of the colonies they show, what happened to the Virginia colony? They left out West Virginia, which didn't separate from the original Virginia until 1861 -around the start of the Civil War. Did they miss that fact completely, or just dumb it down?

Greetings from Canada. Based on the videos like the one above, and the comments below, it is certain that USA is still the leading, perhaps the only remaining nation, that promotes critical thinking and respect for the knowledge and education. Don't take this for granted and always protect it. I wish Canadians can learn this from our neighbours.
