I had to work at the port for a couple hours yesterday, but while I was waiting at the company yard near Deep Creek, I did work W4AVM (American Victory museum ship, the station at 9:00) with a YL op at the mic. Were you able to work it? It was Museum Ship Day on Saturday; several ships were QRV! N4WIS was on 40m CW; I learned real quick a couple weeks ago 40m CW doesn't work well with my car. G90 gets locked in transmit the second I touch the keyer. It's fantastic to have an XYL who not only supports your endeavors in this great activity, but also is willing to participate ON VIDEO! Not all of us are that lucky. Allison, you'll find that in most cases, YL ops get priority in pile ups! This is true on HF and even on satellites! Good to see you having fun on the radio. 73; KC4JGC.

Wonderful radio date! My wife has started studying for her tech test. I’ll show her this video. I’ve been using that 12M Spiderbeam to support a multiband doublet. Tough pole. It has handled several tropical storms and near hurricane winds.

My YL got licensed last year. She got a way better test score than I did. She hasn’t made many HF contacts yet but we use the local repeater some. We all need to encourage more ladies in the hobby.

That is awesome you were able to get your wife on the air. I can't get my YL interested in talking on the radio despite the fact she was pushing me to get licensed when I was just monitoring the local 2m repeater. If you can convince your wife to get licensed try to get her to at least go for her General ticket so you can do some two operator activations.

Great! Looks like she should get a General License soon! My wife passed the novice and tech years ago when there was a code test! When they dropped the code and changed the tech she was “grandmothered” into the General. She will not talk on the air like Allison. Keep up the good work. We also have reservations for First Landing near the end of the summer. It’s hard to get in there!

Fantastic!!! Well done Allison, and whats-his-name..... In all seriousness, that's a great example of how the hobby should be. We're lucky here in the UK with our recent license changes. We're now able to let anyone use our equipment under our callsigns and supervision which makes stuff like this waaaay less awkward than it used to be. Keep up the good work, guvnor. great gob Allison ! haven fun is what POTA is all about. I go with my girlfriend and play radio and have fun even if the bands are bad. love that mast ! now you can do 1/4 wave veritable on 40 meters with ground plain . lots you can do with long pole. longer wire on 9:1 ETC. the XYL can either break a pile up or make one. I did that with girlfriend. 73's

BINGO! Good for at least another 10db gain. Now here's one of the TECHNICAL reasons why this works and is repeatable. When you look at the waveform on an oscilloscope of a male voice, you will see the majority of peaks in one direction. This is called "asymmetry". When you put a female voice on an oscilloscope, the waveform has a more equal level of peaks on both directions, and is therefore more symmetrical. In broadcasting, we use "phase rotators" to even out the peaks on either side and this increases the level of modulation. Phase rotators do little for female voices because they are already somewhat symmetrical, but it can be a very effective tool for male voices. Excellent video Walt. Best to you and Allison. 73 PS.
