This song really depicts the the "tradition" of marriage in some cultures and how it's more of a transaction between the groom and the father of the bride...the lyric "ask for forgiveness never permission" is so haunting and realistic in "marriages" in said cultures and also in abusive relationships in general.

She remembered how her mother had told her she was easy on the eyes. Was her innocence the price for her beauty?

The best song on the album personally for me, so good, the piano is elegant, suspenseful and beautiful. The message is strong about the double entendre with 'tradition', toxic masculinity, loss of innocence and consent. Women who blindly trust tradition get the short end of the stick typically for the short comings of an immature or selfish husband. It's tragic that tradition is usually in favor of obedience from a submissive woman to a dominant male with plenty of riches, lacking constraints to ask for consent for intimacies because of entitlement and masculinity. Tragic that tradition is typically in favor of the perpetrator being forgiven for his crimes by the victim when he was the first on to commit the heinous acts than doing the right thing in the first place (consent). Is retaliation from the victim suddenly unjustified when they start to feel empowered by taking action? Very vexing and tragic cycle of pain and vengence. My confusing take on it.

I’m really here for the collision of these worlds. I’m intrigued by Trent and Atticus deciding to collaborate with Halsey as she was going through the ringer of commercialism. These tracks are haunting, beautiful, intriguing, infuriating, haunting. I took time to start from her first video and watch through many throughout the years… the growth is profound. She is multifaceted, an artist.

This whole album just makes me cry. This is 100% the best album ever, so theatrical the songs have deep, heavy meanings. And she didn't stick to any one thing. This album made halsey my favorite

I don't know how he does it, but everytime Trent starts playing piano, there is something in his style that always gives him away. So recognizable, so epic.

Say that it was season 4's soundtrack cause we all know that was the best season.

I am not trying to diminish Halsey's brilliant vocals and talent but love that new ppl are getting exposed to the genius of Trent Reznor. The combination of his production and arrangements plus Halsey's talent is magic.

The first song that caught my attention was gasoline. I’ve considered Trent a genius since the beginning. Btw i know im not alone feeling this way. Only into the first track and know this is album gonna be gold. So many want to work with Trent yet they don’t. Im not sure if it’s because he is intimidating or what. Im glad Halsey was able to gather herself and write that letter that sparked a seed to create this.

I love Halsey, but you can just SENSE the melody and production by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross… what an amazing combo ♥️🖤

This song gave me the courage to finally report my ex stepdad to the police for what he did to me as a child. The extended reporting laws are a godsend. He will finally pay if the justice system does its job properly.

Ive been stoked on this for months. I’m a new Halsey fan. Hell, I’m new to pop in general. But I’ve been a Trent fan for 30 years and this project really excited me. So far, I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED.

This album is a MASTERPIECE so in love with this album

I love the fact that this is empowering ("her sneer will eat you alive" etc) while still showing that the girl has issues ("all she does is cry" etc)

she does NOT miss

I love that the album starter is this song, it sets the tone for the album... And I think the album sounds distant and cold, which tells where the album title comes from. Sometimes to preserve things you love, you might have to go cold and ask for power and shut down the emotions and soft values in order to protect them absolutely. When the things you love are at constant risk and under threat, like a mama tiger, you go wild and harness all the power to protect your baby. But all that is tiring and consuming for the person at the same time. There, expectations for hope and healing may still start to rise, and to me, close to ending the album, The Lighthouse is like a distant hope for somewhere else in all the mess...

A lot of these lyrics are about child sex trafficking. Definitely a topic a lot of artists don't even dare to talk about. I commend Ashley for this.

Deeper meaning: this is EVERYTHING IN THIS LIFE, not just women rights. She’s using this one thing as an example. This is how everyone acts.

She had watched as they traded gold for her and the others who shared her fate. Her buyers always brought her back, saying all she did was cry. She remembered how her mother had told her she was easy on the eyes. Was this the price for her beauty? - A short story inspired by this song.

This is the album I've wanted all my life. While it will be awhile, I can't wait to hear what Halsey does next. One of the greatest singers of this generation.

Halsey is powerfully genuine and I love everything about her way of expressing this. WE NEEDED THIS AND WE DIDN'T KNOW and that hurts. This is Halsey:pure,raw,brutal,caring,phenomenal art.

Lifelong Trent fan here...Reznor has ALWAYS been ahead of his time. I love each and every road and avenue his genius takes me. That journey led me here and I'm here to tell you to get on that bus folks cause it's a fun, strange, and interesting trip.

This had me completely gripped. Yes, empowerment is important, but I like this new perspective -- instead of just lifting people up after hell, it's like Halsey is saying that, hey, this is a problem. Forget about raising people up -- let's stop them from falling down.
