It has been a long time since I read the lore, but if I recall, the grunts believe in reincarnation (hence the classic CE line, "Oh no, not again!"). As such, it would stand to reason that they might know about Chief and Cortana from previous lives. That said, their odd obsessions with...objects in...orifices is a bit disturbing.
