People losing their minds when Chief dual-wielded and car-jacked a ghost. People take that stuff for granted in videogames nowadays, but Halo completely changed our expectations of videogames. It set the bar for first-person shooters for the 21st century.

I totally disagree, with games like the Last of Us pushing the boundaries of video game storytelling, vast open world RPGs, Red Dead 2 is probably the pinnacle of what current gen consoles can do and it’s amazing. Even in 2021, this remains a legendary piece of gaming history. I can’t imagine watching this live.

The closest modern example I can think of was Mass Effect 3's first announcement at the 2010 Spike VGM awards. Then there was a 4 month gap of nothingness... then Game Informer's April 2011 issue published the first Mass Effect 3 article and the Internet went wild. Some dude on GameFAQs named Freedan the Eternal posted the first scans of the magazine on the ME3 board and his Photobucket account crashed the next day because official gaming journalism sites were hotlinking to it and using his info (and his bandwidth) to write their articles lmao.

Honestly, I know this footage came out almost 14 years ago now, but I remember playing the fist Halo game as a kid and loving it and getting a demo disk with this gameplay footage on it and going crazy from just how amazing this footage looked at the time. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this game and unfortunately, it got delayed quite a few times and it only created more hype for the game. I know that Halo 2 had a disappointing cliffhanger at the end, but the rest of the game was amazing for the time (even if we got to play as the Arbiter more than the Chief. I know how much that pissed people off, but looking at it now, Bungie was trying to build a bigger universe by having the Arbiter as a playable and having the player learn more about the world of Halo. Halo 2. To me at least, is honestly one of the best games ever made in my 22 years of life and likely, will always be one of the best games ever made.

Interesting little fact, much of halo 3 was actually going to be the halo 2 campaign, but time and hardware constraints made them decide to cut it out for the next game. As well, quite a few levels were completely scrapped. one example is what one of the developers described as, driving a big forerunner tank though underwater tubes in a high-speed chase against the clock while fighting though hoards of food. Rip great level idea.

It’s not a rumor, the MCC team has been working with modders to restore cut content to Halo 1 and 2 - the dig site project. It’s not an EXACT replica since it’s being made in the retail Halo 2 engine, but it looks remarkably close to this. It is the same engine, I believe, but just heavily modified. Halo 2 had a lot of issues during development, mostly because of the limitations they had with the Xbox.

Once Halo 2 MCC comes to PC I’ll be waiting for the modders to put this level back into the game.

Watching this video brings me back to my childhood and early teenage years... Those were the days where I really, really enjoyed playing videogames... I was 12 when I got my xbox back in 2002, and Halo blew me away. If there's a generation I feel identified with it's got to be this one. I have so many good memories from that generation: Halo 1 & 2, Blinx 1 & 2, Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2, Forza Motorsport, GT3: A spec, Jet Set Radio Future, Final Fantasy X, Shadow of the Colossus... man, I coud go on forever... I still play videogames, but despìte how good they are or they will be in the future, I will never feel the joy from those times.

Happy birthday to the best game ever made. Good times.

this is still legendary 17 years later. Kids now don't understand because in this day and age nothing is secret anymore with the internet. You know everything about the game and entire stories can be leaked in an instant. But back here it was all spread from word of mouth and magazines. So when the footage is finally shown of the game people lost their minds. I remember randomly flicking through channels in 2003 and on Tech TV they were showing this demo and this was before I even knew Halo 2 was announced. I was losing my mind over every little thing like everyone else, the new suit, dual wielding, being able to board ghosts, the battle rifle, new covenant. Still gives me chills

20 years later and this is still one of E3s best reveals

Damn this is back when games had something new to offer. There was always something exciting to look forward to in the next game of any series. No alpha gameplay just the demos and just the game itself when it came out. Simpler times and a lot less complaints

Halo 2 was perhaps the most hyped I've ever been for a video game with duke nukem forever(2001) being the previous title i was eager to see. I remember watching this and not long after i read a magazine with a halo 2 article. There was pictures of elites on Zanzibar and at the time i thought it was a campaign mission. The game didn't disappoint and the multiplayer with a custom friends list and clan hud/interface felt very refreshing. Loved the game. It's only been a thought these last years of what halo 2 would've been like if it didn't run through all the issues during development. Cut missions and scripts along with cut parts from various level makes me wonder how it could've been.

Level design is also on point. Still not very many games that look that good aesthetically. They definitely put a lot of work in the demo. Too bad it was never put in the game.

@@Ultizer thats because this presentation is fake, Bungie actually nuked the whole game engine after this and started from scratch because this demo was bugged to hell and if you deviated even a little from the path shown in the vídeo it crashes the whole game

OH MY GOD!

audience reactions always make this video more awesome i remember seeing the reactions for the halo 3 e3 announcement trailer, and people were going insane, but then towards the middle where the music and drama was building up there was absolute silence as people were just watching in awe. Truely epic series.

Yeah it came out when I was a junior in high school and a guy had this version playing in my video productions class all period. I watched it every time he played. Needless to say, we had a lot to talk about during lunch and well...for a year and a half after.

***** Yes. Armor abilities for one and then the DMR. They should have just made the Battle rifle have the ability to switch firing modes and keep the same damage output as a single bullet from the burst. Campaign was much worst than previous entries, talking with many others, they have also agreed that is the worst story.

***** I think the problem is that you don´t know any anime. You just judge by what little anime´s you know. I would say Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Shamploo are way more consistently good than some of those tv series you mentioned, by that I mean they don´t have as many low points if at all. And yes DBZ looks bad compared to a lot of other stuff, but it still has good moments and is above average.

***** I completely agree with you Farnese, DBZ by far is not perfect or do I claim it is but it still is one of my favorites of all time. Some others that are really great that I think surpass DBZ story wise by far like Rurouni Kenshin, Darker then Black and may others. +George Ryan I watch many other shows and many of todays TV shows seem to be half assed creations to appease stupid people. (Not all but many many of them) No I'm not blinded by nostalgia; I just have good taste in video games unlike blind fan-boys these days.
