    It's almost like with this and the God-awful Rob Zombie remake they were trying to make like _Texas Chainsaw Massacre_ with the incest, but imo what made the original 2 _Halloween_ movies so great and iconic was that it _wasn't_ an incestuous gory shlockfest. It was a Hitchcock homage of suspense, sympathetic and relatable characters, haunting music and low-key but tragic murder, which were even more shocking because of Myers' random selection and banality (maybe even glee) of them. To him, killing a teen girl's friends and splaying the bodies out for her to find before killing her is just as much a Halloween prank as egging someone's house or spraying silly string all over a front lawn. And what made it more terrifying (and what the Zombie remake _utterly failed_ at), was that Myers was an ordinary kid in an ordinary family.(as evidenced by his parent's shock upon his reveal), showing that a killer could be _anyone._

    I like to pretend that, when he randomly starts killing the cult members, Michael went "Man, killing was so much more fun before it became a job. Now it's all about Gods and babies and... It was just so much simpler when it was just me, my knife and any random person between me and my sister. I'm going to go back to that. Right now."

    +PRHILL9696 The lack of any explanation (though it may seem a bit boring since a bunch of people did it afterward) made the first and second Halloweens more frightening. Like Phelous says, Michael was a force of nature, unpredictable, violent and brutal. Giving him a reason, making him the victim of a curse, and not letting him express it himself reduces him as a monster. It takes away his volition, thus taking away his unpredictable nature, reducing his fear factor and retroactively harming the rest of the series by doing so.

  • @Egalitariat-likesecretariat

    @Egalitariat-likesecretariat

    PRHILL9696 ...I guess you could look at it that way, too. On the other hand, though, the Thorn curse makes Michael's course of action painfully obvious, and when applied over the rest of the series it doesn't make all that much sense. If he was a mindless murder machine, why would he even bother with clothes in-universe? I know why the movie wouldn't show you a naked dude in a Shatner mask in real life, but in the movie, why the clothes? And why was he just staring at her through the window in that one really famous scene? Why would he be lurking at any point, since he's mindless? And if he wasn't mindless, why did he even bother with killing anyone who wasn't Laurie or the literal way of getting to her in the first two movies? Doing that would make it so much harder to actually kill her, since she'd be on guard. Why did he listen to Jamie in the fifth movie? Why did he have a little bonding moment with her in either case? The Thorn curse doesn't make sense within the course of Michael's actions and choices as shown.

    Meanwhile for everyone else it was stupid and ruined their enjoyment of the earlier films as it both complicates and stupefies what they enjoyed about him to begin with. I don't know where you're getting the whole, "fans couldn't enjoy it because they didn't know" crud. The people watching these newer films aren't even the same audience as the ones who grew up with the original trilogy. There's a 20 year difference between this one and the original. I can tell you from experience that they don't like this twist and some sure as hell jumped shark a while ago, meaning this explanation is just for the directors satisfaction. It's the Star Wars prequels all over again. This movie gets a 4/10 from me

    +PRHILL9696 Yeah no buddy. Sure I may not have been around myself but I've got friends who are in their 40s and 30s who have. The consensus between them and even the old Halloween forum I used to be apart of is that this is an example of too much backstory being a bad thing and it only makes watching the old films cringy since this cult nonsense was probably not the direction John Carpenter was going. Yes there were questions and yes people wanted to know but not at the expense of organic storytelling. This origin story is contrived and down right dumb imo. Maybe you're satisfied but you certainly don't speak for the people I've conversed with.

An extreme sports facility is built on Michael's burial ground, the noise awakens him, he comes back killing teens in the half pipe, beating the shit out of Dr. Loomis with a handmade board, cameo by Tony Hawk,, just good old slasher movie without much sense but without any cults, conspiracy, aliens as well.

    This movie could have been better if they tweaked the plots for 4 and 5, and allow a smooth transition into six. They could still keep the cult, but rather than it being about a curse it could be about the cult kidnapping him so they can find out what makes him tick. This would be similar to the novel Friday the 13th: Church of the Divine Psychopath.

    +Edgardo Peregrino That would definitely fix a few of the many problems this film has. Personally, I'm not diametrically opposed to the idea of a Halloween movie that draws more heavily on the celtic origins of the holiday, elaborating on why the word "Samhain" was written on the blackboard in Halloween 2. However, it should do so in a way that does not mess up the entire character of Michael Myers.

    I liked the answers provided in the novelization of the first film by Curtis Richards better. It was much simpler and not confusing at all. Yes, there was Celtic mythology involved, but there was no cult and no curse about how someone has to kill their entire family in order to save a tribe. Just a story about this guy named Enda who "at the dawn of the Celtic race" got mad that this girl that he liked rejected him and married this other guy instead, so he got jealous and killed both of them during a Samhain celebration. Then the village executes him and Enda's soul is cursed to wander the Earth forever, re-creating the events of that night. So, shortly before Halloween Michael starts hearing voices telling him to kill people. He has dreams of the events from "the dawn of the Celtic race" from Enda's pov and the couple he sees in that reminds him of Judith and her boyfriend. Being possessed by the spirit of Enda, he is filled with jealousy and kills his sister. I also don't mind the idea of this being a curse that runs in the family. In the novel, Michael's grandmother tells a story about how Michael's great grandfather also killed someone after he was hearing voices. Halloween 4 should have actually killed off Michael Myers and just made Jamie the new killer. That would be much better, or they could have went further with Jamie reaching Michael and eventually breaking the curse. Maybe in the process she kills some people? Maybe there's some niece and uncle mass killing bonding? imo, both of those sound better than the mess that is Halloween 5 and 6.

    Like most I love Halloween 6 The Producers cut. It finally answered all those endless questions fans had since 1978. Plus it is probably the best film in the series. Too bad it became a joke after that with the h20 reboot and rob zombies remakes And since 1978 fans kept wondering if Myers was a demon an alien or satan himself and if a cult was behind it or the government so it finally got explained that is great

    PRHILL9696 In my honest opinion, it explained it poorly. If Michael is cursed and the curse makes him kill his family members as sacrifices, why does he go out of his way to kill Laurie's friends in Halloween 1 instead of just going to get Laurie right away? Other than people who get in his way, why does he even bother killing anyone else at all? Why didn't the cult ever help Michael kill his family members or kill Dr. Loomis since he was always trying to stop him? If people are supposed to be sacrificed every Halloween to prevent mass sickness and death, why don't these events occur in the 15 years Michael was locked up, or the 10 years he was in coma between Halloween 2 and 4? Plus, he always fails to kill his family anyway so why don't these events occur? Do the other murders count? Plus, it's almost as if Michael is actually the good guy since his curse does what it does so that mass sickness, destruction and death would not affect the tribes. It's all just convoluted and stupid to me. Some fans really wanted to know more about Michael but I've always preferred to think that he was just some evil kid who killed his sister and gradually became so evil that became unstoppable, because pure evil never dies. If you like Halloween 6 though-that's okay. I respect your opinion and even though I don't like this film at all, I think it's pretty cool to see it has some fans.

    Okay fine it’s a fake knife I made myself specifically for this Michael Myers costume but it looks real enough to get a “don’t fuck around with knives” discussion from my dad so fuck it (how did I, a teenage boy make something that good with a plastic refrigerator shelf, cardboard, scissor, brass paper fasteners, a glue gun, and paint i might wanna make props for a living if a fake knife that I don’t even think I did a good enough job on making was enough to fool my dad into being concerned for my life I mean holy shit just think of how good it would be if I liked the job I did on it)

    22:01: Halloween 7: Michael goes Hawaiian would be an awesome spinoff! Maybe have it play out like Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan where Michael takes a break from killing people in Haddonfield and heads to Hawaii to kill even more! Only to run into the same problems with Jason Takes Manhattan: Tight Budget, Majority of the film taking place on a boat with very little of Michael in Hawaii.

    This movie, along with "Resurrection" and the Rob Zombie remakes are the weakest entries in the "Halloween" franchise (and yes, I'm including "Season of the Witch"; which had nothing to do with Michael. That one is far better still than any of the aforementioned).

  • @SamsarasArt

    If season of the witch was it's own movie instead of adding the Halloween 3 title, it wouldn't have been that disappointing. It's an ok movie on its own but that title guarantees disappointment regardless of how good it could have potentially been.

    I always took Rudd's delivery as an effect of Tommy Doyle's intense trauma from the first one. Or, really, I generally tend to mentally write my own convoluted 'excuses' for production errors in films as an attempt to bring some semblance of sense to the story, in my own head. No excuse for why it was ever filmed in the first place, though.
