Its sad to say but how you look does matter especial in hollywood. 2 truths can coexisted. Halle Bailey she is a great talent no Doubt. But she has the look of a safe black girl. She does not look like the typical black woman ie a like a fantastia or issae rae. Her nose is small and barbie like she has lighter skin and smaller lips. They are comfortable with her. That does play a part in how she is marketed and procieve by the gernerally public. Colorism and featurism as a hand in her success.

I agree with this I had another black woman tell me this about myself she's like you're a black person ppl like to see , I was so taken back but she mentioned my hair my features of my lips nose and eyes and my skin tone isn't dark she's like you tan and bronze but your skin still gets lighter in different seasons, she was like you're safe , now I get it ,damn that's crazy , sometimes it really put into perspective how many BW who aren't considered safe, I never viewed myself that way, I view all Black ppl the same

@@truthorlies5282 to be honest it's sad that we get judge so much by our appearance. it should not matter but it does especial in Hollywood. But we also say the same about Lupita nyong'o she is a safe Darkskin women. The find her comfortable aswell. she also does not have traditional black features either. Small barbie like nose and smaller lips with a thin/petite frame kinda similar to Halle. In hollywood when it comes to Beauty especial when its black women they want them to have a safe look.

While I agree with on an individualized level her features such as the small nose etc. are marketable, she is not the quintessential standard of beauty for black women. She has overall odd features that they have made more marketable with makeup, but those odd features are still being harshly criticized in the beauty industry

@@joelprince4170 so true I didn't even realize that about her , darker skin even amongst dark skin it's like a loophole in a loophole , Also I find it weird they say traditional features, BLack people are so diverse looking , we are the most diverse looking group of ppl on the planet hair, eyes, bodies no one is quite like us ,im not interested in Hollywood they are going down hill fast as well as evil , being thin won't matter when you down with the cause , and unfortunately some ppl will never make the cut based on looks , even some white people don't make the cut ...crazy

@@truthorlies5282 your right a loophole that is the perfect way to describe it. They are black but they still have a safeness to thier look. Other examples are Ryan Destiny and Gabriel Union and also just about any other black high fashion model. and also if they don't naturally have that phenotype they can get plastic surgery.

Colorism is worse than it was in the 80s and 90s. Not sure if women like Whitney, Brandy, or Lauren Hill could make it today. Demonstrated how in today's iteration of Color Purple the pretty sister has to be lightskin. In the original movie Suge and Nettie are darkskinned and considered beautiful and attractive. It's like we're regressing.

I just wish we got a princess tiana movie instead of an Ariel movie. Most black girls don't even relate to Ariel. The princess and the frog had a much better story.

To be honest she is still acceptable enough for white spaces. We can approach this by saying no black person is good enough for white spaces but if they must choose a few of us, they want us to be light, have petite features, light eyes, longer hair, and a curl pattern that is loose.

Great video! As much as I like Halle, her music, and ‘The Little Mermaid,’ I agree with your assessment. These discussions matter and put into perspective what we’re seeing in our representation. I would say more, but I do not want to repeat the same thing I’ve repeated in previous comments lol😭!

What i find intriguing is that they still chose the Darker one to be consider ugly and plain going througth all that pain and negativity.while the ligther one is consider to be prettier and more favourable. Even thaougth in the orginail they both are Darkskin women. Its crazy.

Maybe I'm just lost in the, but I disagree that Halle benefits from featurism and colorism. Because Halle isn't light skinned and she has locs instead of loose curls (locs are scene as ghetto and dirty by White people) and her features are definitely African. I think her benefit is the same as Willow Smith. She has Ethereal facial features and beauty, basically non human. She looks like a Mermaid, Fairy, Avatar, etc. Which make her standout because no one looks like her. I think Halle, her sister Chloe, and Willow Smith are great representations of the everyday Black woman. Nothing about them could be whitewashed or privileged like say, Zendaya or Beyonce.

There is only one problem with this Halle Bailey was never accepted as Ariel the little mermaid from both sides, and this was mainly because the character is supposed to be white, and so it didn't matter how close she is to a white woman she would have still be rejected from the role.
