Half Of The World's Coffee Could Be Gone By 2050 (HBO)

Scientists predict that half of the world’s coffee could be gone by 2050, wiped out, in part, by a fungus known as coffee leaf rust.
“It was very upsetting because we expected to have a good harvest last year,” said Guadalupe Avendaño, a coffee farmer in Veracruz, Mexico, for more than 20 years. “But it was the worst.”
Coffee rust kills plants by depriving them of nutrients. And in 2014, the disease destroyed up to 70 percent of harvests in Mexico and Central America. It’s been a problem for coffee growers around the world for centuries, but unpredictable rainy seasons caused by climate change have intensified the spread of the fungus and affected farmers of varying means. “You used to make a living from coffee, but not anymore,” Avendaño said.

Time to legalize marijuana, then the coffee farmers can grow half marijuana and half robusta coffee, so they can still be profitable and the stoners in the coffee shop will be to wasted to notice the difference between arabica and robusta. Problem solved. lol

***** maybe (probably right), but if you're born in poverty and hardship, you're better equipped to deal with it. Past two generations mostly withnesst progress and didn't teach their kids some skill to cope with something like this. BigJames420 don't be nervous, that would be another problem :). We'll need people to think straight if we want to come up with solutions. It will be tuff and probably not very pleasant, but I think humanity will find solutions.

+watercup123456 right, row cropping a monocrop... To think this won't get worked through is silly. Sure, leave it up to these gold rush farmers and it won't, but maybe something as simple as alternating strains in the row crop will help. We'll see...

thats not how GMOs work... This is a fungus problem, not a disease problem, altering the genetic makeup of a plant wont make it resistant to fungus. Granted there are efforts to create plants resistant to fungus, but no commercially available plants yet. The coffee business is an extremely lucrative one, so if such product did exist, it would be widely used. However GMOs are just a bandaid on the real problem that is global warming, normally the fungus would be trivial, however due to wetter and warmer climates its killing all the plants. Also, +Jhon Korn why do non gmo products make you so angry? If people dont want gmos in their food, then let them be, just dont buy the product. Its not going to effect you in anyway, calm down,

its a fungus though, itd be hard to work your way around it. Gmos typically are used only to alter the genetic makeup of a plant, doing things like allowing the plant to take in salt water. Polycultures wont matter or effect the problem at all, as its an outside organism causing the issue. Either fix global warming, grow everything in a controlled environment, or somehow eradicate the fungus without killing off other organisms.

as a historian i must say this fungus has NOT been the primary cause of english tea culture----coffee was traditionally known as "arabic wine" when first imported to the west during the 16th and 17th centuries. the english chose tea instead because they didn't have the capacity to roast, grind, and brew, and figured dropping tea leaves in hot water would be better due to its convenience

This is one-sided. Coffee production is not declining worldwide. It may be declining in Central America (which has a host of other problems), but production in other major producers such as Brazil, Vietnam and other nations is just fine if not increasing. Furthermore, coffee was not necessarily supposed to be grown in Central America (unlike, say, the Andes). Is it that big of a deal if our coffee comes from Africa or Asia instead of Latin America? Who cares?

No matter pro animals or pro plants or somebody gonna die in 50 years or the gender of reporter, we should take care and responsible our planet. The weather is changing not only because of natural phenomena, humans also participate in it. We can never know what the impact of an animal or a plant extinct from this earth in this circle of life.

There is no fungicide that kills the rust or hybrid plants that resist the rust but produce quality coffee? What kind of research are the farmers, universities, or even governments in these regions doing to solve the problem? We need to be forward thinking if we are going to deal with these issues. Just saying "We give up" is anti humanity and the opposite of human history so far.

Trust me they're researching everything you could think of, they just don't tell you. This channel isn't exactly a scientific channel, it's mostly entertainment. Just be sure to buy a couple trucks of freeze dried coffee and freeze it, sell it later for maximum profit if something isn't invented.

they'll charge as much as the market demands it. unfortunately 99% of the population don't grow coffee beans in their backyard. the convenience is too easy unfortunately.
