I played HL2 before HL1 and can vividly remember how the barnacles were introduced. Crawling around that edge after the fight with the combines you suddenly see a bird trying to fly off but getting catched by a barnacle. I instantly knew what those creatures were and that I should avoid them. After that you get thrown into a barnacle pit with explosive barrels. Now that I think of it again this game did an incredibly good job with teaching you the core mechanics without being obvious about it. Can't wait to see what they did with Half-Life: Alyx. :)

I've played both numbered half life games through many times, and even tried to speedrun both. I still had no idea that there was a dude holding a crossbow at 15:12

Great stuff, now I understand better why valve was hiring psychologists, and other strange professionals, that arent at all game designers or artistic, it was all for for stuff like the combines, creating injustice and hatred for them, so we are motivated to fight them, even catering to the rebellion spirit that other game characters speak off.

7:42 the small vent with a supply crate inside is also marked with a yellow lambda symbol. This is used later on throughout the game to mark supply caches that you can find supplies in. So this scene teaches you 4 things at once, not 3.

That was pretty cool! I've seen some other videos going through half-life 2's design, but even then I learned something new in this video. Well done!

Crossbow bolts can also ricochet off of many surfaces with the right angle (20º or so, meaning you should be aiming relatively straight ahead of you onto said surface). It's very consistent.

I've recently watched a streamer who never played half-lfe 2 before. It was fun to watch what parts of design language will work on her. The most memorable thing was in ravenholm when sawblades were blocking the path. Instead of pulling them with gravity gun, she moved the table from underneath and crawled under without knowing that you can throw those things. Well, untill chat started backseting.

I do love me some games that let you shoot a bunch of fascists. 7:50 there is also the lambda sign which leads you to supplies throughout the game. Just one more thing they teach you at the same time :)

Too bad it's a sinfully boring game (the whole series). The first one felt ok, but I was young and the gameplay was different to other FPS's.
