    First of all, I would like to say your tutorial is truly the best I have seen on KZread. I was feeling somewhat comfortable about doing this skirt up until the waistband. I wish people on KZread would stop making markers on the fabrics without showing us. I haven’t sewn in a LONG time, and I am getting older and I want to get back into sewing. So, somethings I need to see how people mark their fabrics and explain it while they are doing it. Some of us are visual learners. But, you are a wonderful teacher and I enjoy your tutorials. I ABSOLUTELY appreciate the time and the effort you take to help others. Thank you so much, you are a beautiful gem!😊

    Oh gosh, how I remember making these in my younger days, paired with an off the shoulder top and long dangly earrings. I just don't think this 60 something post meno body would do it justice these days. Love the way you teach and cover every little detail.

    Great job!! Just an fyi, if you open out your facing when putting in your zipper and have the top stop at the waist seam line fold down the zipper tape and stitch zipper in. Then you can fold the waist facing down over the zipper and stitch down. Gives you a zipper sandwiched under inside facing much neater. But great job anyway. PS I’ve been sewing for more than 60 years. Keep practicing!!

    My first circle skirt took longer to calculate than to sew. My teachers never taught us fractions in primary school. Because "we're on the metric system now",... so functions & relations class in grade 13 doesn't exist any more?... so the entire Imperial measuring system living south of our porous boarder doesn't exist any more?... so it was the 70's and they were huffing things in the art closet to get through the day?... We'll never know. All I know is it took me forevers to get the formula to plug into. Le Sigh. But it's worth is for the swirly hem line. Huzzah. I Love that fabric. She looks The Beautiful. @@thehandmadeharriells Do what I can, good Madam. I am from Canada after all - we've got comedy standards to maintain. Calculator down. Dust-cloth up. Le Sigh. I have to rearrange our little living room in our little one bedroom treehouse apartment (with bonus vegetable and herb garden on the balcony)... basically... I'm moving things about because I can't be driven crazy by the set up on top of already been turned around by the pattern. It's too much, Dahling... So it will now be a livingroom, tv & movie room, library, music room and shiny new sewing studio. Whoosh. {oh yeah, & if I get the nerve up - filming studio for my own YT sewing shenanigans... eek...} I guess this is what it feels like to be in the penalty box. Much rather be fishing the Ottawa. Or phutzzing in the garden. Or mending clothing. Or making a skirt from a 1950's pattern. Or doing what I can to re-find my waistline. Ah well. Same apartment for 25 years (anniversary's in the fall). Killer view of the river, the Lebreton Flats, the Archives, Christ Church Cathedral and some of the Gatineau Hills. I can literally walk down out of my door to the river and see the working end of Parliament Hill while the fish tease me. We get the sun setting over the hills in the spring summer and fall. I'll wedge it in. A Sewing Studio. Somehow.

    Thank you, I’m glad you like them! I’m all for embracing the bodies that got us through this never ending year, but we should also feel great in what we wear 💗 the dress from the zipper tutorial is an empire waist, which gives you volume and swish starting right below the bust. Drama without a cinch! You might love flutter sleeves as well-if you’ve seen my half circle skirt tutorial, I play with a demo sized version for a quick second,-a flutter sleeve is basically a tiny half circle skirt. You could attach those to any dress and remove them when you feel comfortable rocking your arms bare! 💗

    Aw Marcy💜🙏😎 Thank you SO much for sharing your passion ( for LIFE) aswell as sewing… and SEW much more😋… Love you and that sexy hubby of your so much! He has stunning eyes, and you are such a stunning DIVA and you guys are very fun to watch. It warms my heart to see 2 wee best mates who happen to also be very much in love.🤗 I’m sure there are many more of us fans here in Northern Ireland watching you guys…I’m officially addicted now😎🙏Thankyou Marcy and Rob👍 Marcy, I fancy making the half circle skirt( and I will need to fudge it and make it fit into the fabric I have.. which is 52” wide🤔)… I hope I can make it work. I’m curious, how many yards of fabric did you use to make yours in this video? Sending you both a huge hug from Ireland. Love yas💕

    Well THANKYA! I had to read this one out loud to Rob (who immediately launched into his best Irish accent, of course). I used a wax print cut for this one, it’s only 45 wide, but I *am* a shorty 😉. The length is basically dictated by the width of the fabric, so I get one out of about 2.5 yards of 45 inch wide fabric. Let us know if you make one 💗!

    I use basting tape instead of pins when I’m sewing zippers because I can’t Seam to keep the pins straight or something, stuff blurbles and the seams wiggle and jig. And I poke myself. 57 years old, sewing for most of those years, and zippers still frustrate me. Clear, easy tutorial Marcy!

    Do you think that it would work the same if one were to take an extra step and make a skirt pattern out of paper first? Mostly because I'm worried with my waist measurement (larger), if I wanted one as long as yours I'd probably need more than one seam in there somewhere. Oh gosh I love how you do waistbands!

    I’m confused by the waistband. You cut two both same size. How does the facing piece overlap when the interfaced waistband fitted the skirt perfectly? Brilliant tutorial and I love your finished skirt.

  • @thehandmadeharriells

    @thehandmadeharriells

    Glad you liked it! So, the first waistband is stitched to the skirt along the skirt and zipper edges at a 5/8th seam allowance. That means three sides of the first waistband are now smaller than the second waistband. When you stitch the second waistband to the first along the upper waistband edge, the other three sides of the second waistband match perfectly, when you fold them under the zipper and skirt seam edges. Hope that makes sense!

    Sorry to have missed this! The sweep of the skirt should fit a wider hip (if not, you could go with a full circle skirt, or add a godet). At center back, I would increase the length when cutting, so that the hem will hang level at the back. And definitely level the hem while she's wearing it!

  • @Jen_S_Hassler1258

    @Jen_S_Hassler1258

    Using my limited understanding of fabric bias (something I've always tended to ignore because it uses so much more fabric) I would think that cutting a waistband on the bias would allow it to get stretched out. That's typically something we want to avoid, unless it's an elasticized waist. Or am I completely wrong here? Sorry, I'm not trying to be a smart a** because I'm typically not so smart when it comes to sewing. Queen of "Flying by the Seat of my Pants" here! 🤭

    Yes, both Jen and Judy are correct! Not that I’m the authority on waistband cutting 😉 interestingly….I’ve been wondering about a two piece bias cut waistband, one that sort of dips into the skirt like a v-neck on a t-shirt. Maybe at a lesser bias, like 60 degrees…I can’t get it out of my head so I’m going to have to experiment...
