This us coming from someone who bred and showed American Paint Horses for 30 years. To be a Paint, the horse must gave documented parents from an approved breed. Quarter horse, TB or go back to one if the original paints registered. A Pinto can be pretty much any breed or mixture of breeds (just not mules) as long as they meet the color requirements. So, a Paint can be double registered as a Pinto, but not all Pintos can be American Paint registered.

I’m stating a fact, not my opinion. Study the mechanics before telling me or anyone else there’s nothing wrong with making a horse hold their head behind the vertical. Rollkur is even worse, both involve hyperextending the muscles and ligaments. It’s unnatural and unnecessary, only the “show world” does things like this to horses.

@@MagnificentHorses Quarter horses have been going through a trend of Breeding purposely for a very low headset. Unfortunately people are using horses as a trend setter so to speak. Going back through the years you can see people have made the different horse breeds into something they were not originally. For years it has been one thing then on to another. There is no such thing anymore to show a horse with its own natural headset and way of going. I believe Exaggerate is the key word in showing many breeds. Also, another interesting trend is to add extra hair extensions to tails. Kind of a downer to have a dead horses tail added to my horses tail.

@@MagnificentHorses I think this style of holding the reins has evolved over time from the show training ring directly to the show ring. It allows the horses to be shown Western without being as fully trained and developed as they were in the past. The horses heads/noses are being manually held back by riders constantly in their mouths working to keep their heads back as well as in line. Watch the reins/hands when you get closer in because the riders hands aren't still, they are constantly tugging on them to pull their horses heads in. I used to watch my friend and other trainers do this over 30 years ago when she was training her Arabian for the Western classes. However, if my memory serves me correctly, when they got into the show ring they had to switch back to holding the reins in one hand and use neck reining. You would still see the riders flicking and jerking the reins to pull the horses heads back to try to keep them in frame, but that was more a reminder to the horse because if they'd pulled back much more it would have caused the horses to stop. They didn't have quite so much power to hold the horses noses back so far. Occasionally, some people would come into the ring holding two reins instead of one on horses that hadn't yet fully learned to neck rein or hold their noses tucked, but those would usually be people who had entered a class at that point not so much to try for a ribbon but to give their horses some experience in the show ring. I guess some of them started placing despite not holding the reins in the traditional way, and then seeing the edge that those folks had because they were manually able to hold the horses heads in place with both hands and not have to worry about transitioning to a single hand, or trusting the horse to keep its head in place, the rest of the crowd followed, and that is how we are here now with this weird reining. Well, that's my theory from what I saw back then to what I am seeing now - but I missed a lot of those years in between, so take it with a grain of salt. 🙃

@@CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx thanks for the info. A few years ago I watched a class where some used one hand on the reins and others used two hands. I asked about that and they said that horses under a certain age were allowed to have riders using both hands. I don't know that much about Western myself so I'm not sure about that. And don't give me wrong, I'm not a fan of holding the reigns up high and out at shoulder width.

@@MagnificentHorses The age thing would make sense because they are still learning to set their heads as well as to neck rein with their heads tucked, too. Greener horses. However, weren't they all doing it? That's why I was musing that maybe seeing it gave those doing it a competitive edge, they all started doing it? I haven't been to a horse show in years, least of all an Arabian one, so I can only guess at what is happening. I do agree with you about how they are holding those reins. It can't be pleasant for the horses. :(

I can't fairly rate these horses. The riders looked ridiculous on holding their reins the way they did. What's the reason for holding the reins that way? Any horse that looks like a pinto can be registered, as long as it's sire or dam are registered, and it would only be registered as a half Paint. If both parents are registered, the foal can be registered as both parents, such as Half Arabian and half Paint. I had a gorgeous mare that was registered half Arabian and half Paint. ❤ I really miss that mare, she was bomb proof. I could put little kids on her and she was just so gentle with them.
