Haleiwa Town Part 1 4/10/2018 [4K] Hawaii

Ойын-сауық

Haleiwa Town Part 1 4/10/2018 [4K] Hawaii. Virtual morning walk of part 1 of Haleiwa Town walk, the mauka (mountain) side of town. This is the Wailua side of Haleiwa. You can hear so many birds in the background like in may of the Hawaii videos. This is mainly the food & shrimp trucks, McDonalds, Starbucks, small stores. This is the quieter side of town. Part 2 will have Matsumoto’s, Kua’aina and its much more lively.

My mom was born and raised here and in Wailua, she went to an all girls school that once existed in town here she told me. I remember diving for puka shells and body boarding at Aliis beach all the time and my buddy and I used to sneak into the fish pond behind the gas station and whip for papio. My mom said as kids they played in the stream too under the bridge.

That's so cool! Thanks for bring me back to your past! Sounds like you folks had lots of fun going up on that side! In town we used to play in the stream all the time and scoop fish and crayfish but, now days I wouldn't let my son do that, too dirty now. Good to remember the ol days! Thanks for watching Ikaika! Be safe! Aloha =)

Man this is nice. I remember the old days, watching surfing movies at the Hale'iwa Theatre, going to the Snowfire Drive-Inn, having saimin at the Hale'iwa Inn, etc. The two markets, Kit's and IGA, and all had their own tokens or sometimes just a little slip of paper as change for food stamps.

@@PhotoLukeHawaii Back in the day (tm) when I was a kid in that area in the 1970s it was full of "pilau" angry hippies; basically entitled middle or even upper middle class white people from the mainland, who played at being poor but who had family money, and had weaseled out of the Viet Nam war (while the working-class kids had no choice, they had to go) and it made it a lively place but it looks much more relaxed now. I remember they used to follow us around in the Esmond because being (at least mostly) white we were suspected of being shoplifters. But looking back I think they were correct in doing so, because a lot of the hippies etc *were* shoplifters. In fact the only time I saw someone shoplift in Kaya's store in Punalu'u (we lived right next door for a while) it was white guy, who took a package of boiled peanuts and because I saw, he winked at me and I was so astounded I didn't know what to do. I think these days Hawaii is less romanticized and is more like ... being allowed to be its own place. I guess the economic crash of 08 really took everyone down a notch anyway.

Thank you for doing this video as you did, walking around instead of just driving by. It's as if I took a vacation and was actually going holo holo. Born and raised in this town, i'm now 74 years old and living on the main land, but can clearly remember during my youth walking around these very places. Many times I've walked down Paalaa Road while passing Haleiwa Theater on my left heading towards Kam Hwy, then making a right towards Yee Hop Chinese store to buy chicken feed for my grandma. How sad that some of the old landmarks are no longer there, like Haleiwa Theater and Yee Hop store. Yes. I've also walked over the twin bridges many times while heading towards Ishimoto Store located just before you get to Kawamata's Service Station on the left side, that too is longer there. That was a very nostalgic walk that you took, brought back many memories and made me happy and sad at the same time. How time flies. Thanks again for doing this, means a lot to me. Mahalo.

Hui, Luke & Cheryl, Mahalo plenty for this Holo-Holo through Hale'iwa. It reminds me "Small-Kine" of Pahoa on Hawai'i Island which I enjoy going to every now and then. So, I have a couple of questions. Are the Food Trucks only contained in that area? If so, it kind of defeats the purpose of being mobile. I'm sure they most likely have to pay a fee now to be located there. It probably hurts their finances as well. I don't get it! Does this apply even to Da Manapua Man & Ice Shave Trucks too? (Do they STILL even exist!) People in Hawai'i try to support their Ohana by small business and even if it's a "side-hustle" only to be repressed in some form or another. SAD! (ENOUGH of THAT!) My second question, Are the Food Trucks only operating on particular days? It appeared to be rather desolate. All and all; another awesome video! Going to part 2 now. Have a guud one, Aloha, W.

Wayne Maffit good questions! Okay now days I think they need some kind of food permit to operate a food truck. They all have the paper somewhere in the window on usually in view just like at a regular restaurant. I don't know about the location part. Most of them now days seem to pay rent at a location and have tables. I do see some on the street on the serving customers on the sidewalk in in town and downtown around construction sights, at UH, oh and the ones at Sandy Beach are not permanent. We still have people selling fruit, corn, pateles, fish, flowers out of there pickup truck or a plate lunch under a tent on the side of the road but, don't know if they get hassled by the law or not. In the Haleiwa Town videos we were there earlier in the morning so not too many people there yet and not all places were opened yet. The all have similar hours but, noticed some are closed on certain days that others are open. We saw the more at the Kahuku one we just did. Thanks for watching the Haleiwa videos! Watch see you later! Aloha =)

@@PhotoLukeHawaii The thing with food trucks is, they're way cheaper than renting/buying/building a building. And I believe to have a restaurant permit, quite a large kitchen is required for a building. Hawai'i food trucks don't move around as much as mainland ones; they tend to get permission to park in X location and let the people come to them. Mainland ones cater to workers, primarily, and I believe in my city, San Jose California, they're actually required to move every 1/2 hour (although they generally don't).

So, what is the cost of food in that quiet little town? It must be sky high. Does everyone know everyone's business?

Depends on what youʻre getting. If youʻre going to one of these shrimp trucks it about $13-$15 per plate depending on which one you go to. Some trucks have lower costing foods. Iʻm sure a the smaller town like this you might know each others business. I really donʻt know cause I havenʻt ever lived there before. Itʻs very touristy and good foods all over the place! Thank you for watching! Have are day! Aloha =)
