    They are definitely lighter. Especially the Halberd. You could not sparr safely with our level of protection. However, the halberd is heavier than it seems, it has a hard core to allow for hooking actions.

    Is that haft circular in cross section? I prefer some flat, if you can, just shave the sides, so you can keep an eye on your opponent, and his weapon, instead of the position of your head. (I prefer Pollax, and Lucerne Hammer, but the principle is the same.) Also, the haft can turn in your hands, if it's completely round. With the spear, it isn't as critical, but when you have a blade that size, and a hook to hook with, which way it's turned is crucial to effective fighting, and striking. Otherwise, you might as well just have a spear.

    at first i thought a halberd's end has more possibilities and thus was more dangerous, but clearly a spear's lighter nature allows much more dexterity to outmaneuver the halberd in practically every way, and still be very efficient at the one thing it was made to do -- stab, and although a long-pointed halberd can accomplishes the same thing practically, the blade portion is just naturally going to get caught on more and prevent a 'full damage' blow in 1v1 for anything non-1v1, i imagine the halberd being much more dangerous due to the offensive possibilities and weight, with a focus on catching people unawares

    Spears only have one way to win. Halberds have several. If you get past the tip of a spear, it's useless, which is what a halberd's hook can make happen. If you get past a halberd's tip, it can still kill you.

    In my opinion, both weapons are great. However, a spear would be my first choice if I had to choose between them. A spear is traditionally lighter and more balanced when it comes to weight on one end. Also, one well-placed hit with a spear would be all you need in a fight (same goes for a halberd, too, but because a spear is faster, it could mean the difference in victory or defeat).

    In a duel between a halberd user and a spear user, I would assume both parties are wearing armour, which complicates things. A thrust to the torso that would otherwise be fight-ending might do nothing if it just glides off a breastplate. A strike from a halberd might ("might" as in: I'm not sure to what degree and how likely that is) injure an opponent even through armor just through the concussive force. edit: Oops, didn't see that your doppleganger already gave essentially the same answer.

    Honestly the halberd feels more like it should be used to slash the enemy's limbs when pulled back on a missed thrust. That way you can actually still damage the enemy with any stroke used. Using it as a simple slashing weapon just seems plain wrong in my opinion. Tho I do also like the idea of locking the enemy weapon in the gap between the blade and staff and rotating it to your advantage. 1:19 that one was definitely a good use. His leg would have just been cut off at this point. 0:55 that one was also nice. Seemed like a weakness but it was such a good counter lol

  • @TheNivable

    @TheNivable

    @@ilongfordarkness Well I can not add more knowledge than you might have received while watching the video from Lindy which I mentioned. A lot of halberds have the axe blade angled towards the wielder, which seems like it's absolute main purpose is indeed the return. One could argue that a billhook also does damage on the return HOWEVER the chance of losing your weapon is high when you hook into a fricking horse or some other sturdy thing. The angled axe blade has a rather low chance of getting stuck. Also think about formations which were always heavily defended in the front, sometimes with extra shields but certainly with thick breast plate but on the back, where the axe blade hits in the return, the armor is usually much much less.

    So just asking a question here, but does anyone know what the typical length of a halberd was? I've found conflicint information. With some sources claiming that they were actually quite short - 5-6 feet - which is shorter than the typical spear was - 6-7 feet or longer. But then I find some sources which claim that halberds could be quite bit longer than 5-6 feet, all the way up to 7 or 8 feet long. To me this seems like a very important consideration when trying to recreate this type of combat. A 5 foot long halberd will act and handle very differentlhy to an 8 foot long halberd. I'm not staking an opinion on which length is more correct, if indeed there is actualy a "correct" lenght, its just that the halberd being used here seems to be very long-hafted, and I was wondering if this is historically correct, or if it should have been shorter. Thank you for any info you all can provide regarding this. Cheers.

    well it's really an hard one to tell Halberd has somewhat kind of more range or attacking method (could slash with the end) but the spear is more agile and faster to stab with (since weight) so I mean ... ehh ... personally I would say spear has a bit more advantage since a good stab would probably be the end of it ... ? Halberd stabs slower and somewhat deal less damage from stabbing compared to spear, and the slash is only useful when you out range the opponent, a direct stab from the spear would usually be quicker than a round slash from a halberd.

  • @lazyreaps
    @lazyreaps23 күн бұрын

    I feel like the halberd is more of a destructive weapon than this can offer to show. With a halberd you put a LOT of momentum into a long stick, that blade is EASILY going to hit through armor if it's real. A spear relies on a straight stab which is effective, but with the right armor and footwork a spear can almost be made useless.

Combine this with some dowels from your hardware store. The staff should be slightly taller than you, for medieval size, and a head shorter than you for hunting purposes.

    I mean swords are just faster and more practical in a full-on battle. The only times in which a spear would be better are at range or on horseback; if you can weave your way around the spear and use your arms and legs to knock the enemy off balance, you could get under him behind his arms and decapitate him, slit his belly, or slice his throat.

Not to mention the stamina and endurance and footwork required to stay in combat for at least 2-3 minutes. While the spear irl is significantly lighter (practically a bamboo stick lol). That's why Halberd is seemingly OP.

    Its sparing, he cant just swing the damn thing and end it. You wont get out of its way in time, you can see it coming, if he had enough space to impart enough force into his swing. You will not stop the blow. Same as a zweihander. The Mass it what matters here. I would argue even un armored, if it was an actual fight 1v1. The spear is not going to win. You will not run into the guy with a halberd just to get a possible win. Your best bet is to run away.

    Yep. It definately feels like the spear allows the user to have more turn movements than the halberd. While the halberd user is having trouble with the extra weight, you are planning where to strike next, and that gives a lot of advantage, if both are unarmored.

    It pisses me off that it's so damn hard to find a real (fair) spar like this with yari's (Japanese spear) because all they do is that slow pre-determined kata form shit.

    It seems from the nature of this type of sparring match, it artificially gives too much credit to the superficial slashing attacks of a spear but not enough credit is given to the devastating slash of the halberd. Obviously, both can equally end the fight with a well-placed poke. On a side note, this halberd user wasn't very skilled, nor was he aggressive enough with the slashing motions to take advantage of that weapons strengths--aka 95% of the time, he was just poking with the spear end only. Maybe that's the crux here. A halberd requires more skill & training than a spear, similar to honing sword skills. I bet this halberd fella could take out most spear wielders in a dual: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YpOcp7pvgLXNh5c.html

    One thing I think a lot of people commenting here don't seem to get is that the halberd was very much intended as an anti-armor/anti-cavalry weapon and not just an anti(unarmored)infantry weapons. By the time halberds were commonplace, armor was also much more common. If the question is unarmored combat, I'd personally go with the spear, more nimble, but if Iwas fighting an armored opponent, espeically in plate armor, hands down you would go with the halberd. Full plate harness, which was relatively common by the late medieval period, look up munition grade armor, was EXCELLENT against stabbing attacks - which is the spears bread and butter, and not so good against blunt trauma, like being hit by a big ass stick with a hunk of metal on it - the halberd.

    Surely swinging the halberd like a hammer would be more effective, he's only using it like a spear so obviously the thing that is a spear will win.
