Afi James Hal portrayed the real deal blue collar dad which put a lot of real Black fathers in a good spotlight.
The hoppy and smitty routine was always hilarious. First hoppy would explain in official police language, then smitty would have to explain it to fred and lamont in street language. It was always perfectly executed.

I doubt Sanford & Son would make it in today’s “cancel culture” world. Sooo many people would take offense, but you know what? I think just as many people would fight just as hard to keep it alive.
I loved the cop routine when the white cop Hopkins, would tell Fred and Lamont the situation in the technical police talk! Fred and Lamont would turn to Officer Smith for "translation!" Great hilarious routine!

One of my favorite lines besides all of the ways Fred said YOU BIG DUMMY. Probably the best dummy line was when Lamont left Sanford and Son to work for a competitor. Fred hired this giant to.take Lamonts place. The guy was clumsy and kept breaking things. Fred walks over to the giant and says You are the dumbest dummy I've ever seen. Why, your a bigger dummy then my dummy.

Best show ever...hands down! I still love watching it. It's one of those shows that came when the world needed good humor and it has stood the test of time, because it's still funny to this day. And he is right...its funny how people remember him more for the comedies like Sanford and Son and 227.

MR Hal Williams a world-class television Legend and thank you for all the.tv memories👏👏👏👏
Love that episode specially when aunt Esther ate That salad!!!!
Awwww this takes me back to 227 the good ol days 💜
Hal Williams was good TV Dad and John Amos was the ones I look up too and Pops Witherspoon some real genuine guys
Great guy! Really enjoyed him on Sanford & Son and I definitely remember him as Harley Foster on the Waltons, he played that character very well...
The last 2 days l have had a SANFORD AND SON marathon with my DVD'S. I laughed so hard at the sitcoms l had already seen over a dozen times. Redd Foxx was a natural, believable comedian. Even though he died broke, my fellow St. Louisan was a generous man.
Mr. Williams is a Legend!!! His acting resume is extensive. On Sanford & Son, my favorite line was when Fred hit the white man in the Black Cadillac, & “Smitty” Mr. Williams’ character says: “Brother You Sitting On Top of a Gold Mine.” I 😂😂😂 every time I see that episode. Thank You Sir for Gracing US w/ your PHENOMENAL TALENT!!! #STAYBLESSED
Great to see the icon of classic television
I remember that "Mary Jane" show on Sandford and Son...I laughed when he mentioned it, because it's still funny.
Hal Williams Happy Belated Bday. I enjoyed you on all my fav shows, Sandford & Son, 227, Waltons. You are an outstanding actor. 😘🎈

We love the shows. We watch reruns all the time. We watch you on 227 too.
S&S is in my top 5 list of best comedy shows ever. Probably #1. The realness of that show is unmatched as well as real life characters come to life.
I was a little baby but as I grew up my aunts my mother's sisters told me about him and watched everything he did and was very happy and proud of him and to this day still am be blessed my Uncle keep up the good and excellent work

Oh God Bless Mr. Hal. Loved him in 227 and Good Times. Love ya man✊🏾
I met him in 1998 and he was so nice to us...👌Thanks! Agian man
I went to Brentnell Elementary School. Hal lived across the street from the school with his two sons, who were about the same age as I. Hal helped with the neighborhood Little League Football team. I remember, when I 1st saw him on THAT GIRL saying, "That's Mr. Williams!"
SALUTE TO HAL WILLIAMS.👍🏻
Loved Fred G. Sanford. That show takes us all back to a better time in life. Things were not as complicated as they are now. Miss those days
Another T.V. legend I grew up on the 80s, as well as a 70s icon. Great to see Hal alive and well👍
Way to go Mr. Hal Williams!!😀 Looking good at 81.
one of the most versatile actors I've ever seen. not only is he at home in both comedy AND dramatic roles, but he's GREAT in everything he's in! not easy to do with such a variety of roles!
Hollywood can be hard navigating the various roads of success. Enjoyed him on Sanford and Son. Bless up

I got my picture taken sitting in the actual Sanford and Son pickup truck from the show a few months back, it's at a place in North Royalton Ohio called Blueline Classics, check out their website at Bluelineclassics.com, they even sell cool T-shirts that have the logo from the driver's door of the truck on the front of them.
Oh wow, glad to see he is alive and kicking. Looks great for 81.
Hal Williams you look great you are one of my favorite actors especially on Sanford and Son.
I thought that Hal Williams was great in Sanford and son. He was a great actor and also did well in the Waltons. He also played the Drill Sergeant in the movie private Benjamin. Thanks for posting this 👍.

Mr. Williams is a true icon. As luck would have it, he appears to still be as sharp as a razor.

As Mary husband on 227. Strong kind levelheaded Spouse. He was comical & good Dad, role model ...solid Family . Compliment to his wife.
I remember him on 227 as well he was always my favorite on both shows.
Omg I loved him on 227
Hal Williams is a national treasure...He gave great performances, on "Sanford & Son", "227", and in memorable movies...It's wonderful to see that he's, still, here, and looking very good, healthy and strong, and he, still, even at his age, has a striking head of hair....Keep on keeping on, Mr. Williams!...I'm a big fan of yours and of "Sanford & Son", and I watch the show, Monday to Friday, every week.
He was also in 227 with Marla Gibbs as her husband. He was always a great actor.
It IS GOOD to see you, MR. WILLIAMS.
I appreciate you and yo hard work sir. Thank you
Great Great Actor I've seen him in many movies and tv shows
Loved him on Sanford & Son and 227. He and Hoppy were the best tv show cops. A hilarious duo.
Always liked you in all the shows you were on
Hal Williams was one of the best prolific actors of his day. We were blessed to be here during this time to enjoy the actors that played these various parts in Hollywood. 🙏 ❤🎉
Glad he's alive and well great actor still love Sanford and Son
Hal Williams is an absolute doppelganger of one my relatives! Every single time I saw him perform I'd just be stunned at the uncanny resemblance. Williams was taller but I think if this relative had worn lifts he could have walked on the set of Pvt Benjamin and fooled the cast and crew(the relative is a Vietnam era army vet). It was not just facial either! Tone of voice, demeanor and personality were equally similar. Still, I admire this actor for his talent and work more than for the coincidental resemblance to a family member. Rock on Hal Williams,
OMG he is such a great actor
He was a great supporting actor. Glad he was used a lot in the show. He said he wasn't funny. HE WAS!!! His translations were the best!!!
Hello, good to see you. Loved you in your various shows. Take care.
I like his work on 227.
Such an awesome actor and besides his role on S&S, also enjoyed Mr. Williams on 227. He was also on an episode of the 1970's show Cannon.
There were so many hilarious lines in that show. One of the funniest was when a bully wanted to beat up Lamont for talking to his ex-girlfriend. Lamont started taking Karate lessons. Grady was staying at their house and asked Lamont why he was taking Karate lessons. Lamont said, to protect myself and that it's the oldest form of selfdefense. Grady said, "it aint older than running! "
People talk about James Evans as the best TV dad, and that may true , but Lester was no slouch either. A great provider, loving, supportive and loyal father and husband. Hal Williams did a great job playing that role. The Lester character from 227 doesn't get enough credit for being a great TV father compared to James Evans, George Jefferson, Uncle Phil, etc.
