HAL And Private Industry Can Work Together To Make India Self Reliant In Aerospace Sector, Says CMD

After years of being criticised for below par performance, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL, India's prime aerospace manufacturing company is beginning to pull up its socks and is making earnest attempts to fulfill expectations from its prime customer, the Indian military and the Ministry of defence. The government's recent emphasis on achieving self-reliance in defence and particularly in making the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas an acceptable addition to the Indian Air Force fighter fleet, has given a new impetus to HAL It wants to be a full spectrum technology company and not just a licensed manufacturer as it has been for years. It wants to create and own IPs, wants to collaborate with the emerging private companies in the Indian defence sector, be part of India's quest to be a defence platforms' exporter and undertake crucial research and development for futuristic products.
Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, CB Ananthakrishnan, talking to Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale in this episode of On the Shop Floor, elaborates on how HAL is ramping up its production capacity to meet growing demand, the company's plans to make LCA Mark II planes and also be part of the AMCA project in the coming decade besides strengthening its rotary wing division to serve the Indian armed forces and also become a major exporter to the world.

    Fighter jet lines cannot be automated. Because minute of minute details matter. It’s a lasting asset. Only thing that will be automated will be 3D printing and ovens for baking carbon fibre components. Which is why the production is slow. What they need is expansion and shifting it in the outskirts of Bengaluru city. What I fear more is security. As you can see, right at the HAL compound, residential plots are located. Anyone can spy from a distance.

    Brother I don't think there are any robots/machine in the market that you can use to automation a aircraft manufacturing. Even if there is some machine that big players are using like boing or Airbus, They are not going to sell it to anyone. These kind of tech has to be develop inhouse through RND and its a Step by Step process and you should not expect highest efficiency so early.

  • @ShaneCallum

    @ShaneCallum

    @@sambartadutta5229 I have. F35 requirements are different. They have automated assembly line not the production. Also remember we procure radars and computer vision components from Israel. It’s basically plug and play. On the other hand, Raytheon manufactures radars for F35 and USS. Also the assembly line is more streamlined because of NATO demand. Most of the member states have to rely on US. So the contractors have no other option but to automate few things but not the production in itself. Orders are already in place. For Tejas, countries bave shown interest not purchase orders. For manufacturing 90 aircraft for Indian Air Force, you don’t need an assembly line. Also nations are waiting for mark 2 desperately. Once that happens, then you will see rapid shift in production process.

    @@ShaneCallum You clearly haven't seen it. Go check the videos from Northorp Grumman who 'produce' critical assemblies for F-35 including the central fuselage. It's highly automated. So are the Dassault Business jet production line. I don't care what the NATO demands are but if the Indians are complacent enough to think that this peanut production rate is going to sustain them in modern warfare...it's about time they get a rude awakening. Hopefully within this decade. Given the number of multi axis CNC China produces each year....and employed in their automobile industry, it's safe to assume their frontline fighter 'production' lines are highly automated as well. 💀

    HAL has only delivered 31 Tejas if the SP model. God knows when they will deliver the Mark 1 and mark 2. They need to develop greenfield plant assemblies at Bangalore or Nashik.

    At max we should give additional 36-72 order for Rafales, and save the money there to invest it in Tejas mkII & AMCA (with upto 50% help of private cos for faster completion) projects.. everytime due to such foreign acquisitions our own excellent projects remain dead... if we commit for 90 more Rafales, then forget abt Tejas mk II & AMCA... it will cause severe delays, as we'll be paying the French untill 2035 and not enough funds will be left for our own Tejas... Tejas is one of the rare beautiful projects by DRDO which shld not be delayed by filing french pockets #Jaihind

    Atmanirbhar Bharath initiatives and drive are Laudable when we see the progress, which arguably is very slow and still we have decade or more to catch up with Chinese Manufacturing Capabilities of 100 Fighter Jets per year Chengdu and other Chinese competitor. While we are boasting 16 Units per year needs serious thinking and future planning and large investment and budgets from The GOI - Defence. Strategically thinking and advancing we can also add MORE DRONE MANUFACTURING CAPABILITIES to complement the Air Defence System. Iran Israel War, Russia- Ukrains conflicts add more knowledge to Military strategists. Turkiye has been able to deliver Stealth Fighter already taken First flight. KAI Boramae also tested in 2022. HAL needs to take into account veryv seriously the Advancements in Defence Competition. Bureaucracy still persists within Government of India thinking and decision making. Make Private Sector like TATA, Mahindra, other key players as good competition to HAL. Even USA has two or three strong players, Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defence, Northrupp Grumman etc. We have only ONE HAL. We must think about it.

    While it is certainly gets interesting to watch, hear & know our country is advancing by leaps & bounds in terms of becoming athmanirbhar/self reliant in our defense equipment/assets, I feel it is not in our national/defense secrecy interests to discuss the numbers, deadlines, capacities, orders, exports/foreign markets interests & the key personnel involved in the productions so that our competitors, enemies or anti nationals may not take undue advantage/cause any disruptions or even create worse situations for the country.
