@Vinicius Borges : "Better" and "best" are merely personal opinions, and never have been nor never will be reality. But to my ears, this is worlds better too. Labire and even the rest of the band don't sound even half as good as this to me. Don't get me wrong, I love Dream Theater, and as a guitarist myself and even influenced by them. But this shit is deep man. Dream Theater are better technically I could agree, but technicality is nothing compared to the other elements these guys possess, like soul and the mystical and undefinable soundscape this band has attained. As difficult as it is, it's far easier to be technically proficient because it just takes practice and hard work. This though is not something one could teach or gain through practice and hard work alone.

You should have seen their second show during Progressive Nation at Sea. His workstation plumitted to the ground druing a song. I feld sooo bad for the guy. That same show, charlie's string broke, Rays cymbal stand fell over and Ross had a terrible feedback. Richard seemed to be the only guy without bad luck. Poor guys. Anyway, I have also heard recordings of shows where I was and I noticed that sometimes recordings might capture some dissonant singing while the real performance was spot on. I don't know what causes this. Every three times I saw these guys live they were as good as here.

As great as The Astonishing is, it's a far more interesting read than it is a listen. And that's where I think Haken has always excelled. Telling a story through the course of an album that is complete while also being a characteristically cathartic listening experience. I can listen to the same Haken song on loop for hours and still get chills. The hype for Haken V is real.

I just heard of this band tonight from a guildie in an MMO I play (Vindictus) and this may just be my favorite band now along with Stimpy Lockjaw (if you haven't heard them, give it a listen). I've been looking for music like this for decades now and super surprised I never heard of them until now. They have all the elements I felt that modern prog has been missing since Rush and Yes entered the commercialism of the 80's and I lost interest in prog and became a thrash metal/neo classical guitarist for a long time. Sure, I love bands like Dream Theater etc too, but imo even they never came close to this as far as feeling, emoting, soul, mysticism, and a unique sound that no one else could ever duplicate. Perhaps Dream Theater could be said to be even more technically proficient, but even for a prog band technicality is secondary to all these other qualities that are much harder to define and become adept at. I think Rush proved that, even up to the end of their long and fantastic career as a band. I've never got the chills from listening to prog since I was a Rush fan as a kid. Only Stimpy Lockjaw has come close. But Haken is working for me big time. Way too many people my age say that prog, and rock in general would never be the same or worsem the genres are dead (lols, no). But I've always stood my ground and told them they just weren't open to new experience and the kids these days were every bit as capable. Only the music industry itself was to blame. Thanks Haken for proving me right finally. I didn't need proof personally, but now I have it anyway, lols. P.S. I see a lot of comments suggesting other prog bands, and since I am both middle-aged and live in a very rural sparsely populated area far from my home city of Oakland/Berkeley California, I never hear of great bands anymore from fellow musicians and friends irl now. So I rely on you guys to help steer me towards the good stuff. S thanks in advance for the suggestions that at least some I am sure I will enjoy.

Being a good songwriter is as much a challenge as being a good musician, and some people have both, these guys blend both tastefully and you essentially summed up the most fundamental features of any song. Say what you want about Haken but you can't deny their creativity

This is really brilliant. I've actually been in the middle of a death metal kick of late, so stumbling on the 'Pareidolia' was a happy accident. I've probably been responsible for half its plays since then. When people lament that there's no great music being made these days, I think about bands like Haken, and I have no idea what they mean. Okay, fawning over.
