Hair Transplant Sydney | Consultation Part 2 - The Procedure Explained

What happens when you have a hair transplant?
Naturally, most hair transplant patients wonder what the day of their hair transplant procedure will be like, how they will feel and what the doctors and their surgical support team will be doing.
In this consultation with Dr Jennifer Martinick and Dr Sara Kotai, respected actor and presenter Paul Gerrard echoes the thoughts and feelings all patients have before a hair restoration procedure.
Reassuring Paul that he will be comfortable throughout the six hour procedure, Dr Martinick explains that after he is given twilight sedation, a strip of donor follicles will be taken from the back of his head.
As the surgical support team painstakingly work on splicing up the follicles for transplant, Dr Martinick and Dr Kotai will be preparing the recipient site where the donor follicles will be replanted.
Like every hair transplant, performed by this surgical team, Paul’s transplant will be individualised to ensure a natural looking transplant and optimum opportunities for a thicker looking head of hair.
Dr Martinick and Dr Kotai are the only two doctors in the world who practice the Martinick Technique ™ and Optimum Density Technique (ODT) - a marriage of hair transplant techniques acclaimed for their natural, healthy and full appearance.
Along with the Martinick Technique’s renowned method for replicating hair’s natural angle and orientation, the incorporation of the ODT’s ‘curl’ principle maximises each patients opportunities for a thicker head of transplanted hair.
By curling the transplanted follicles, scalp coverage is maximised, ensuring patients avoid the ‘see through’ look that can be associated with some hair transplants.
This ‘curl’ principle formed the foundation for Dr Kotai’s development of the Optimum Density Technique, a technique for which the early seeds were planted while she was still in medical school.
In this video, Dr Martinick explains how timing is critical during hair transplant procedures to ensure donor follicles are placed back into the scalp within six hours to obtain the nutrition and oxygen needed for healthy growth.
While patients generally have 6,000 precious follicular unit grafts (FUGs) available for transplant the maximum amount that can be transplanted in one surgical procedure is 4500 FUGs.
