you can also reuse the seeds for a second batch of gel (and after blend them up with some oil to make a hair mask). an almost 0 waste hair product!
I make a flaxseed gel blended with aloe vera and caster oil for my husband. It works just like a store-bought men's setting gel, but it's much better for the hair. For myself, I use basically the same recipe shown in this video as a pre-shampoo mask, which I leave on for about 30 minutes to an hour before shampooing. It gives a wonderfully soft, shiny texture to my mixed wavy/semi-wavy hair. Two suggestions for making flaxseed gel for any use: First, regarding straining, yes, use either cheesecloth, or even better, a nylon nut-milk strainer, but also, unless you really need a super thick gel, don't cook it for quite so long: I simmer mine for maybe 5-6 minutes tops. It strains quite easily and still gets very thick once it has cooled. Second, to even out that goopy, eggwhite quality in which some parts feel gelatinous and other parts feel thinner, mix in about 1tbsp of oil per 2cups gel while it is still warm. I like to use a thinner oil like apricot or jojoba, but if you have very dry, porous hair, you might experiment with something heavier like avocado. Adding a little bit of oil also helps to prevent that "crispy" texture when you use it as a leave-in, and so long as it's just a little bit of light oil, it won't affect the hold or weigh down the hair. (Of course, if you want to use it as a pre-conditioner, as I usually do, you could also double or triple the oil for extra conditioning benefits, since it will all be shampooed out anyway.)

I was thinking this too, that mixing it with oils and other nureshing products, should make a great thick hair mask like ”store bought” consistensy. I’m considering trying this :) And also making a gel for my husband :)

Do you apply on wet or dry hair when using as a pre-shampoo mask?
Done! I strained it very quickly through a gauze I had in my 1st aid kit 😉 I also added some lemon essential oil (vitamin C) and vanilla oil (helps reduce hair loss and thinning. It enhances hair growth and makes your hair shiny). Plus now I smell like a cupcake 😊 Happy 2024. -Sabina.
Oooh! I just had an idea that I’m going to try. I want to boil the flax seeds in water with a sprig of Rosemary.
I actually put the seeds in the strainer and lower the strainer in boiling water keeping the seeds in the strainer (or put the seeds in my stainless tea infuser). When you see it thicken just remove the strainer and no squeezing needed. I put it in ice cube tray and freeze the extra. When I need some I can just pop a cube out of the freezer and thaw.

Another tip: I use organic gels including flaxseed and what I do is, after it's dried in my hair, you can actually soften curls by using a silk scarf and scrunch the curls with the scarf. I don't touch my hair with my fingers, I just use the silk to gently scrunch the crunch out. It leaves my curls very soft without drying them out or causing frizz.❤
Those who find flaxseed gel sensitizing to the scalp can try oat gel!
I love flaxseed gel and have been using it for almost half a year. My family and I went on a trip recently and I couldn't bring my flaxseed gel so I had to use comercial gel. My hair hated it. I needed to wash that out. I usually make a batch of the gel and freeze the extra in an ice cube tray with lid. Makes it easier for me so that I don't have to make it again in a while and I can control how much to defrost so not to waste it.

Like store bought hair gels just don't compare😉
I have curly, wavy and straight hair. My curl pattern is insane. I can’t wait to try this.
You can also use a french press, usually used for coffee, but surprisingly good for straining flaxseeds! Just do it while it's still hot and empty/clean promptly

I just wanted to say that I LOVE listening to your videos. They are so soothing and relaxing to me. Thank you for making such great content. I also just wanted to say. I've been dealing with alot of post partum hair shedding. But despite that, my hair and scalp are the healthiest they have been in the past decade. Thank you for all your lovely and wonderful advice and thank you for sharing your recipes.
girl, waiting for you to open up your etsy shop with all of your treatments and recipes already prepared.
Don't waste the seeds, you can eat them, blend it into your smoothie or put them in your oats I haven't been so crazy about a hair "product" as I am with flaxseed gel since discovering Amla. Flaxseed gel has repaired my hair that I thought was beyond saving. I have low porosity, extra fine hair, that got ruined 6 months ago when I tried to cover terrible plant based dye with a synthetic hair dye. I've had so much hair fall since then that I've felt embarassed to leave my hair untied because it's got so thin. All the oils are a no-no as leave-ins, like many other products even if they aren't supposed to be heavy - they always end up making the hair look greasy. I have now used flaxseed gel for a week, and my hair is silky, looks and feels much fuller and the damage seems to be minimal. Plus it defines wavy hair very nicely. Of course I need to be careful with not overdoing it because of fine hair, but still, it's a 9/10 for me. (Also: it's so easy and cheap to make) Thanks for your content, because of you I switched to washing my hair with clay and my scalp has never been happier
A small piece of loose weave tulle fabric can also be used for straining. Easily squeezed out while holding seeds back . 🌼

🦋✨excellent tips dear! another less cumbersome way to strain flax seed gel is by using a nut milk bag. turn it seamed side out, pour in cooled flax gel and squeeze from the top downwards. easy pedeeezy! thanks for sharing ✨💜
Just needed to say, that this is literally the best gel I’ve ever had…a game changer, no more itchy flaky shit from all the chemicals, and it doesn’t make my hair feel hot and heavy like that other shit. The gel is so light, it’s natural and perfect
You can boil the same seed again with less water and extract more gel from it....and since its a highly hydrating gel it works as a super food for your hair and best part is you can add rice or moringa or fenugreek seeds to it while boiling...it makes your hair soft and strong though you cannot leave it on your hair for too long since it has protein in it....but if you add rosemary or fennel seed you are good to go....i just love flaxseed gel and think its a gift from nature....i literally quit using eco hair gel n just use flaxseed gel on my hair and what can i say.....it has made my hair soooo soft. I just love my hair now😊
Love that you talk about this! I've made this gel before and loved it; not so much for the styling benefits but how smooth, shiny and healthy it made my hair. 😊
Another good use for flax seed! I will definitely try this.
I love your hair health videos!!! I really can’t wait to see if you post a video about dying your hair!!!

Great video!
Try a nutmilk bag to strain the gel, unless you already have the cheesecloth, they're a synthetic fiber and very solid. I got a couple to strain celery juice.
I boil mines for 30 minutes or longer, don’t have a problem with straining it. I find the thicker it is the better it holds my ends. I’ve been told to reuse the seeds but never has my gel ever come out right! So I don’t reuse them anymore.
Thanks for the video! I truly love DIYs and natural remedies .. I use flaxseed gel with almost everything including henna!
I make a flaxseed gel but for weaving. Use it on the linen warp to make it strong, stiff, smooth. And have used it as a binder egg replacement in vegan baking. I had not considered putting it on my hair. May give it a try.
Love flaxseed gel ❤ have been using it for 3 years. I always strain mine with a stocking and it strains so well. I love natural products. Love your videos 😊
I've used flaxseed gel for about two years now. It's great! I just love it! And it's so easy to do, to apply to your hair and no chemicals. Great video! 🌹
I will definitely try this out
I tried out a flaxseed gel today and I'm amazed! I never thought it'd actually be like a gel, but it looks a lot like a gel I used to buy at a local drug store (a cheap, big pot. But didn't have great hold). I used 200ml water, 25 grams of whole flaxseeds (I tried broken/crushed flaxseeds, but that turned into a snot and was very hard to strain xD It stil works well though!) and a few drops of lemongrass essential oil for scent. I'm used to having either a LOT of frizz or extremely stringy hair after using a gel, letting the hair dry completely and breaking the cast. But this gel didn't look too bad when the cast was on (I could low-key leave it like that!) and when breaking the cast, my hair was smooth, hydrated and held it's shape a lot better than usual! Restyling is easy by applying a bit of water or a bit of extra product where needed. After years of trying to tame my manes, I was ready to give up on wearing it curly altogether, but I'm glad I found this recipe!
Hi! I had literally just sat down to rewatch your other ‘short’ so that I could make this, and saw you just had this updated one! Making it right now. You must be reading our minds! :) I have fine, thin, straight hair, sadly :( going to see how it does for me and I’m so excited to try it. I use aloe vera gel on my hair after washing; if this ends up too thick for my hair, I plan on just diluting it with the aloe vera gel and applying if need be. Thank you so much for all your helpful and interesting videos! Much love from Florida, USA

Hey I live in Florida too! ❤
I have an old version of an Ankarsrum mixer and I have strained mine with that. It was so much easier! The meatgrinder attachment to it has a strainer! There probably is one for a kitchen aid or similar as well. It's usually used to make apple sauce and things like that. Otherwise I can recommend using a (clean) stocking. And something you can press/pull it in between to get everything out from it. Like two chopsticks. It is messy but worth it. I have a plan to make a larger batch and freeze in larger ice-cubes trays and take them out as needed.
I like mixing hybiscus dried flowers with the flaxseed as it puts colour into the gel and gives my hair a nice auburn shine🌹🧑🦰🇦🇺
I put olive oil and honey for moisture and rosemary for smells nice to my flaxseed gel
I have been using this for many years , experimenting I found for my hair , I add castor oil and extra virgin olive oil … it’s amazing
I use a large French press for straining which allows me to make a more concentrated gel.
I squeezed through a piece of muslin. Washed the muslin and used it again. Tip: have enough pieces of muslin as it’s a one use squeeze until it’s washed.

All I had was ground flax seed so I made it anyways I got most of it out but my hair is brown so I used it. It works great! I will be getting whole seeds for the next batch though. Lol
My grandma used to use this on us kids for a setting lotion with curlers or rag rollers.
The fruit bags in the Walmart will strain Out the flax gel great thanks for leaven Leave in codition.thanks again it is well needy for my hair.
I made for the first time, but did somenthing wrong, maybe i left much time boiling. So, I did a second time and look "ok", but i put less seeds than was required and because of that it's very light (the color). I'm gonna shower my hair tomorrow. I have a 3c medium hair. Wish me luck! Edit: I DID! It looks really hydrated. Next time I apply more to the sides of my head (it's a little "dry", remembering that I have high porosity hair). I mix with a little of grapeseed oil on the ends of my hair (It's my favorite oil).
What are your thoughts on tallow in the hair? I’ve been loving it on my dry, fine curly ends. I feel like it absorbs really well!
I wanted to experiment with heavily gelled 60s styles but didn't feel like buyong a whole tube of gel for that one style, this might be the way to go
French press works wonderfully to remove seeds from the gel.
That gel recipe Is older than my grandma❤

Older than our grandma's grandmas I reckon.
Cheese clothe is harder because the gel won’t pass through unless you squeeze hard enough for the seeds to pop through with it.
What do you think about soap nuts for washing hair, please? 😇
Why filtered water? Ooh, I wonder if you could boil the seeds in some sort of tea bag or tea caddy to prevent them from entering the gel in the first place.
I dont stress about trying to get so much of the gel out of the mix. Just a fe stirs through a seive, scrape undernearh rhe sieve to loosen the gel that hasnt dripped through. Then my chickens love rhye remainder of the seeds and gloop mixed through their food.❤
Can you please tell us any home remedies to colour our grey hair any remedies that really works
Your hair is very similar to sisi's in the 1860s (except she used henna to achieve a more copper chestnut but I assume her natural shade was similar to yours) I often tend to overcomplicate how certain historical figures would curl their hair when the idea that this particular person had naturally curly hair and the subtle wave is due to the length and the fact that it was braided most of the time is just as plausible and a much easier way to achieve the look ^^' I'm too used to seeing people from the 20th and 21st century and affluent people prior to that with their hair altered that I forget to assume that the person just didn't have the same texture as I do
Would you say it helps with your crown frizz? Like like a little frizz because it looks more natural, but mine seems to be out of control. Th aka in advance!
What do you think about using this as a wet detangler, I’ve tried making a fresh batch, and when it’s still very very warm, even hot, but not burning, putting it in my hair, I feel like it distributes the oils from my scalp and then I can detangler it Rinse it if I want or leave it and then reapply and leave it in as a gel…
Okay so how long does it stay good and where should u store it the fridge?
❤❤❤❤
I have Pocahontas-like hair. I used the flaxseed gel today for the first time as a mask after washing. My hair is incredibly shiny but it left a coarse, hard, dry texture to the strands. It means it’s not for me?
I saw another video of someone recommending a french press to seperate the gel from the flaxseeds.
if i use oil on my damp hair to seal in moisture should i use that before or after the flaxseed gel?

Yes you can. I use flaxseed gel consistently on my hair and scalp. I make it thin and mix in a little oil so that it won't be too crunchy. I saw immediate hair growth the first week, but that could also be attributed to the coffee I started putting into my shampoo or conditioner.

It's a fairly well known recipe. I first discovered it years ago from "The Healthy Home Economist".
But after drying up this gel makes flaky textured dried up gel.. so couldn't use anymore
I have been wanting to try flax seed gel. I use the Wavy Girl method and the only non-natural care product I use, ever, is mousse, which I apply to my wet hair to keep the curl from falling out when it dries (my hair is very fine and, without a product like mousse, the weight of my hair pulls out all the curl, except in the ends or when it is very humid). Have you tried chia seed gel? That is another option I would like to try.
@ravenskye4893

chia seeds contain a fair amount more protein then flax, I would advise caution trying chia gel if you have protein sensitive hair but otherwise it might be a great treatment
I tried the flax seed hair gel on my last wash day. My hair doesn't look as clean as usual; it looks dull. This might be because I strained out the flax seeds without using cheesecloth. I'm going to strain it again with cheesecloth and try one more time before I decide that it's just not for me.
